This comical, fantastical, romantical, New York Times bestselling, (not) entirely true story of Lady Jane Grey is “an uproarious historical fantasy that’s not to be missed” (Publishers Weekly, starred review). In My Lady Jane, coauthors Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows have created a one-of-a-kind YA fantasy in the tradition of The Princess Bride, featuring a reluctant king, an even … of The Princess Bride, featuring a reluctant king, an even more reluctant queen, a noble steed, and only a passing resemblance to actual history—because sometimes history needs a little help.
At sixteen, Lady Jane Grey is about to be married off to a stranger and caught up in a conspiracy to rob her cousin, King Edward, of his throne. But those trifling problems aren’t for Jane to worry about. Jane gets to be Queen of England.
Like that could go wrong.

Any book that can take one of my childhood fascinations and (1) add a talking horse-human, and (2) turn it into a happily-ever-after, is legit. <3
This book was hilarious!!! From beginning to end I was laughing out loud, talking to the characters and just plainly having fun. Kudos to the narrator who did an amazing job, she really added another level of fun to an already extremely funny story.
I should mention at the beginning, this book is almost a parody of what really happened. And the authors took and changed history in a very liberating way. Except for the characters, most of this story is fiction and with a good amount of fantasy sprinkled within.
Jane was certainly my most favorite character of all. This book toting, and book loving heroine was strong willed, witty, smart and entirely captivating. She made me LMAO, her dry wit and British humor had me shacking my head and grinning like a mad woman.
G, the horse, Gifford, was an almost perfect partner for her. The antics between those two made me chuckle and their relationship was sweet and wonderfully satisfying. They were a match made in book heaven.
I’m so glad to report that Edward got his own love story. Which I thought was fitting and exactly what he needed. It was certainly a case of opposites attract between them. Jane and G were a similar match and I must admit the authors have a way of creating couples that complement each other in the best of ways.
I loved the wackiness of the story and that the authors didn’t take anything too seriously. It made this entire experience so much more fun. I must say I have NEVER read a book like My Lady Jane before – and I don’t think there will be another quite like it. It will go on my shelf for unique storylines and I can’t wait what else these three authors are coming up with next.
I already have My Plain Jane (book 2) on my bookshelf, and hope it’s as good as this one. Wish me luck!!
Refreshing and romantic historical fantasy novel.
A quick read and totally entertaining. Also, great for moms and teens. The world-building was exceptional and the character development was natural, like meeting a friend.
If you love The Princess Bride you will love this witty, snarky, adventure that twists history into something delightfully fictional. LOVE.
My Lady Jane was such a fun novel. As a book that is considered historical fiction, it takes so many liberties with history delighting readers with such a comedic and lighthearted voice, throwing in fantasy to make the story incredibly entertaining.
As the result of three authors working together, My Lady Jane is fantastically comical. These three authors took a figure in history, Lady Jane Grey, who ruled England for nine days before losing her head to Mary Tudor, eldest daughter of Henry VIII. To take such an event and weave their own story, giving it a much happier ending, not only takes imagination, but it takes talent as well. They were able to create a story, removing the religious, political games and making it something less dry. There is the Verity, people who are unable to turn into animals versus the Eðian‘s, people who can turn into an animal. The fantasy element makes the story all that much lighter because let’s face it; religion can be such a touchy and droll topic. So here, there’s no risk of offending the audience, while also not losing the divide in England during this time.
My Lady Jane is just an excellent story that shifts between three point-of-views, intermingling perfectly without losing the overall narrative voice. The narrative voice stays comedic; it keeps the same tone which makes it so hard to imagine that this novel was written by three different voices, serving to prove that the structure of the novel is impeccable. What also makes the narrative so great are all the sly comments the narrative throws in about the time-period, breaking the fourth wall as it addresses the reader while maintaining a third person omniscient narrative. It is fluid, maintaining the perfect pace without losing the reader as it goes from internal narrative to storytelling to addressing the reader at times. It works perfectly for this novel, this style of storytelling, making it a unique read.
There is just something so marvelous about this novel that makes it so captivating. The characters, the interjections and ridiculous titles of the books Jane has read, from G’s transformation to a horse, make these characters, these historical figures, relatable to the reader. At sixteen, during this time, they are considered adults in this time, and yet they are still young adults trying to figure out what they want in their lives. They are such relatable characters that, in some weird way, will urge the reader to discover who these people were in real life. It is like a fun history class, written by a cool teacher who is trying to get his students interested in history…moreover, this story does that, despite having bits of fantasy interwoven with it.
It is hard to imagine taking a tragic moment in history to being used as fodder for a witty and entertaining read. It is warm-hearted novel to read (or listen too – the audiobook is fantastic and brings more life to the funny parts) that will leave the readers smiling at every interaction, every bit of historical twist, and every narrative interjection that addresses the reader.
A very fun book to read!
I don’t know why this one didn’t grab me, but I couldn’t get into it. Perhaps it was me/my frame of mind, since many of my friends greatly enjoyed this story. But I felt like it didn’t take enough risks emotionally, where I was aware of the storyteller more than the characters or of a certain self-consciousness behind the narrative. But. I may give this one another look in a few years since there were many positives.
I never expect to love this! I switched between listening to an audiobook on my work commute and then reading the physical book whenever I could. I normally put quotes in reviews and I have never had such a hard time picking quotes! This book is so quotable that I just want to put the whole damn book in my review!
The narration on the audiobook was like a dream and kept me so interested I felt like I was driving on autopilot! I can’t say thank you enough to my friend Wren for telling me the audiobook was amazing.
I loved every single character so much! of course, my favorite was Jane, our little bookworm Jane. I just ended up loving her so much. Between her love for books and that take no crap attitude of hers, I was a goner.
I don’t want to ramble about this book too much because I don’t want to give anything away.
Now the reason I had to give it 4 stars was because there some slow spots throughout the book for me. Nothing to make me put the book down entirely.
Overall I can go on and on about this, it was a super enjoyable historical fiction with a twist and everyone should read it!
Oh my heart. I laughed through most of this book. It’s completely ridiculous & adorable. I don’t even know how that’s possible, but I loved every page of this story.
Love love LOVED this book. Perfect blend of historical fiction and fantasy… Jane and Gifford are perfection… Pet is my favorite forever… I just have a lot of feels.
Also, I want to turn into a cat.
A great take on Lady Jane Grey. This is funny and one of my favorite books from last year.
