This New York Times bestselling author delivers a “page-turning romance” (Nora Roberts) about a city girl on the run and the strong, protective cowboy who keeps her safe. Brand Merrick is a take-charge cowboy who considers relax a four-letter word. So when an injury lands him six weeks of physical therapy, he intends to keep right on working-until his grandmother hires a therapist to stay at … grandmother hires a therapist to stay at their family ranch. He’s not used to following orders, or slowing down, but Avery Grant has a way of getting him to do things he’d never thought he’d do . . .
Avery hates to admit it, but this super sexy rancher is testing her patience…and her professionalism. She’s a born-and-bred city girl, yet she finds herself drawn to the rugged wilderness and the equally rugged cowboy she’s here to help. But when a threat from her past follows Avery to Montana, it’s Brand who rides to the rescue-if only she’ll put her trust in him, and the growing feelings in her heart.

An extremely enjoyable book with complex, deeply moving characters and the spectacular grandeur of the Teton mountains! I felt that the love story of Brand and Avery was a definite slow-burn take it one step at a time type of romance that suited both of the characters very well. Definitely a must-read for cowboy lovers everywhere!
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book provided by the publisher through NetGalley.
The Merrick family were cowboy dynasty…
City vs country wasn’t an issue, surprisingly, as Avery flew from New York to Wyoming to share her PT skills. Brand didn’t want anything to do with therapy but Avery he was interested in. And the feeling became mutual. The whole Merrick family was four generations of very different characters and Avery was going to befriend them all…
Avery and Brand’s romance was sweet and steady as he recovered and she fell in love with him, his family and Wyoming itself. I don’t blame her as the land was beyond grand and Brand’s family was a bunch of intriguing and lovable characters. There was tragedy and danger which amped up the emotion and drama in an otherwise quiet, yet steamy, courtship.
I loved my first visit to the cowboy country of Wyoming and there are many more single Merricks to look forward to!

I’ve loved cowboy stories since watching the old B&W tv shows when I was a little girl. Since I will most likely never go out west and experience the real thing, I live vicariously through these books. This is a very entertaining and well written story, the first in the series, introducing the Merrick Family, four generations living together, on the huge ranch that is their legacy. It starts out with a tragic event that sets the scene for the future.
Brand, the oldest of the three brothers, the youngest generation, had a serious fall and injuried his leg, but being a stoic cowboy, did not follow his doctors advice and now has a limp and is in constant pain, so his grandmother, a former nurse, hires a well respected physical therapist, Avery Grant, to come to the ranch and work with him, something he is not happy about. But the biggest surprise, is when Avery arrives and she is a woman. One thing that Brand and Avery have in come, is they both lost their mothers at a young age. But while Brand still had his large family, Avery only had her father, a top cardiothoracic surgeon, who had little time for his daughter, especially when she decided while in medical school, to switch her interest from medicine to physical therapy. Avery is such a bright, kind and beautiful person that she quickly wins Brand and the rest of the family over, despite Brand’s initial resentment. But Avery has a secret. One reason that she left Michigan to take this assignment, is because she has a stalker. I think most readers will figure out who the real stalker is, way before Avery, the Merricks and the police do, but that and the very corny ending are the only negative things that I could find in this book. And there is also a recipe at the end.
The characters are all engaging with lively banter and I look forward to reading more about the rest of the Merrick clan. Will Liz realize what she has with Chet? Who will win the hearts of Casey an dJonah? What about Bo?
I read an ARC from NetGalley.com. This is my unbiased and voluntary review.
Wow!!! I have to say I was pulled in from page one and hated to see this one end. I loved all the characters and the setting is one I want to visit in person!! I will admit I had figured out the mystery early on, but this isn’t a suspense novel it’s a love story. One that will have you sighing, smiling, laughing and even cringing at times. I’m so eager to read more in this series. R. C. Ryan is quickly becoming a must buy author for me. She knows how to write great characters and settings that are so real you know they have to exist. I can’t wait for the next story. I highly, highly recommend My Kind of Cowboy to everyone!!!
My Kind Of Cowboy is R.C. Ryan’s first book of her new Wranglers of Wyoming series and an introduction of the four generations of Merrick family, starting with the eldest son, Brand, whose fall from his horse has left him limping and in pain. Physical therapist, Avery Grant, is hired, and while she stays at the ranch, she must find a way to get this super sexy rancher to do therapy—not be drawn to the rugged wilderness or the equally rugged cowboy. When a threat follows her to Wyoming, could she trust Brand rides to the rescue? My Kind Of Cowboy has the small town vibe with a slow-burn romance and the descriptive beauty of rugged Wyoming R.C. Ryan always includes in her books. If you like rugged and sexy cowboys, and strong, fearless women and a bit of suspense, this is the book for you. You will walk away with a good feeling at the end. Do not forget the bonus story by Carolyn Brown! Cowboy Rebel is another great story about a sexy cowboy and his nurse.
First Book I’ve read by this author and I absolutly loved it never wanted to put it down. Avery and Brand had a good chemistry. Actually if I’m being honest Avery found her way into Merricks hearts even the grumpiest of the bunch Ham. This book held me from start to finish I was eating out of this authors hand the whole time, begging to know what happend next. I lost a lot of sleep reading this book cuz I didn’t want to put it down for a second. I Hope thier is another book!!
I received an ARC from NetGally and these opinions are my own.
This was your typical modern cowboy romance story. It was endearing, full of charming familial relationships, low angst, and a sweet romance. There wasn’t anything about the story that really overwhelmed me or details that made it really stand out amongst it’s genre but it was an enjoyable romance read.
The two main characters have nice chemistry even when they fight it. There were some moments in the plot that I found a bit outlandish but nothing totally detracted from my enjoyment of this book for what it was: an easy, entertaining, modern west love story. I hope to get the stories of the Merrick brothers in the future.
Really enjoyed this highly entertaining, sexy, fun and emotional adventure filled with engaging and exciting charters, witty banter, heart racing twists and undeniable passion. Was a great read from beginning to end.
Set against the back drop of the beautiful Teton Mountains in Wyoming – R.C. Ryan’s My Kind of Cowboy is suspenseful, family and love.
This is a can’t put down book! The story of Brand Merrick and Avery Grant is inspirational.
We all have our ‘go-to’ authors and when I’m in the mood to go back to my country roots, spend some time in the beauty of the wide-open spaces of the Western states then I’ll look to R.C. Ryan (or her alter-ego) for my “cowboy” fix. I love getting in on the start of a new series, and My Kind of Cowboy introduces us to the multi-generational Merrick family and their ranch in the Wranglers of Wyoming series. The type of family that built the Mid-west and West ranching communities. It is that sense of generations that begins this series with a look to the past and how it has shaped the Merrick family in so many vital ways.
Worldbuilding is important in any first story of a series, and we get a very strong, emotional feel for the Merricks as we learn how they became a multi-generation family working one ranch. It’s a strong look at how Brand became the man he is today, stubborn, proud, and always so determined to do things his way or no way. I fell in love with Brand rather quickly, in spite of his stubborn nature… and could that man ever be bullheaded. Avery is a delight and the perfect match for Brand. Equally stubborn in her own ways, she’s a city girl who has serious trouble following her no matter how far away she tries to run from it. Watching these two stubborn, strong people banter, challenge, reassess each other, and slowly let the attraction between them go somewhere was an emotional, engaging journey.
You’ll find fun family interactions, more than a few laughs, some serious sizzle, secondary characters who cry out for their own stories to be told, danger, and a love worth fighting for. I had a blast with My Kind of Cowboy, and I’m already anticipating the next chapter of the Merrick family in the next book.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from Forever (Grand Central Publishing) via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
I feel like lately every time I get my hands on a book by this author it feels like coming home. She has a way of making you either feel like you are right there or that you are catching up with friends and it was very much that case in this book. I also had a hard time putting this book down. I wanted more so much more. I loved Liz and the brothers and hope their stories are coming soon. I also like how this author tries and keeps the books as close to a clean read. I really liked Avery to me she came off as this person while she faced a lot it didn’t break who she was and she still continued on with life and what it handed her. Brand was a hard nut to crack, but he was still very likable and very much a trustworthy older son who just needed a little push. I seriously can’t wait for more from these fun character and to see what will happen next. I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley. I was under no obligation to post a review and have given my honest opinion
Brand Merrick loves being on his family ranch but suffers an injury which requires therapy. Avery Grant is the therapist from the big city who arrives to help. They have clashing personalities when they first meet. Avery has come to Wyoming to escape mysterious threats so she won’t let Brand send her away. When the threats arise in Wyoming as well, Brand decides he needs to protect and help Avery. The romance is well done and their is a mystery of who is threatening Avery. The love story is engaging and the characters are well written. The suspense adds to the story and all in all it was an entertaining book.
The Merrick men are a rough and tough group. They work from sunup to sundown. When they fall in love and marry, it is for life. There are 4 generations living in the ranch house. Grandma has put her foot down and the men are not happy with her. She has hired a physical therapist for Brand, who injured his leg in an accident. Avery Grant has been warned that her patient is a stubborn man. When she arrives at the ranch, they are all stunned. They expected a man. Never underestimate the power of a woman. She is whipping Brand in shape and falling in love at the same time. Her past has followed her to the ranch. It is all for one.
I love how the author has described the Grand Tetons and the wildlife that exists. Simply breath taking. Billy, the family cook, just made me hungry. I wouldn’t mind him cooking for me.
I love a good cowboy romance and My Kind of Cowboy was no exception. There is a large family working a ranch at the base of the Tetons. That family is full of strong, sexy, stubborn cowboys. When Avery, Physical Therapist, is brought in to try to help Brand finish recovering after a riding accident,
that stubbornness comes out in spades. As she goes about winning him over to gain his cooperation in his therapy, can she help it if she’s really warming up to him?
Ms. Ryan did a great job with the characterization of the characters and adding a little danger and mystery to the mix. I’d actually figured out “who dunnit”, but that was okay.
I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.
After a fall from his horse Brand Merrick is told to take it easy for a while and that he needs some physical therapy to heal up right… but he isn’t on board with any of it. He doesn’t think he needs someone telling him what to do, and that he needs to slow down. He has work on the ranch to do and a little injury isn’t going to keep him down.
But his grandmother disagrees and decides to do a little meddling… which lands a beautiful, feisty physical therapist on his doorstep! Brand instantly knows this isn’t going to end well, or is it?
My Kind of Cowboy brings you into the lives of a broody wounded cowboy and the woman sent to help him heal from his injury, and winds up finding her way into his heart too! This slow burn romance is bound to keep you enthralled from beginning to end, with it’s dramatic and mildly suspenseful story line your eyes will be glued to the words. I really enjoyed watching this couple find their happily ever after, it wasn’t an insta-love kind of thing, no this one took lots of patience and fostering to flourish. Brand was stubborn and constantly pushing Avery’s buttons, but she didn’t let him off easy, she gave just as good as she got from him. Their constant battles brought lots of steam, emotion, and tension to the pages… and a few smiles too. If you like small town romantic suspense stories, with broody cowboys and feisty heroines at the helm than I have no doubt this one will keep you entertained… it’s brimming with all the good stuff!
I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest and unbiased opinion.
When Brand Merrick injures his leg, his grandmother insists on hiring a physical therapist. Avery Grant is hired and arrives at the Merrick Ranch and it is a surprise to all that Avery is a female. She is used to people underestimating her and knows that she can help Brand recover. He soon begins to realize that Avery knows what she is doing, but how will he deal with his attraction to her? When Avery finds herself interested in Brand, as well as his warm and loving extended family, she knows it will be difficult to return to her life in the city. Avery felt threatened before she left home and thought she would get away from the threats, but what if they have followed her to Wyoming? I really enjoyed this heartwarming family story that will make you wish you were living on the Merrick Ranch. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. Overall My Kind of Cowboy was a good story. I enjoyed the sweet romance between Brand and Avery, but was hoping that Brand would have shown a little more resistance to accepting Avery’s help since he was so against having a physical therapist. I really liked the Merrick family and look forward to the next in the series.
I voluntarily read and reviewed a complimentary Advance Reader Copy from NetGalley.
Terrific start to the new series. It opens with an introduction to the Merrick family and a tragic event that affects them all. A house fire sweeps through the ranch house that Bo, his wife Leigh, and their three sons had just moved into. The oldest son, Brand, succeeded in getting his two little brothers out of the house, then woke his parents. Unfortunately, his mother didn’t make it. Bo and his boys moved back into the family home with his father, mother, sister, and grandfather, making four generations living together.
Fast forward twenty years. The Merrick boys, Brand, Casey, and Jonah, have all grown up. All three work the ranch with the family, though Casey and Jonah also have other professions. Brand recently was injured in a fall and still suffers the aftereffects. As stubborn as the other men in his family, he ended his physical therapy early, unconvinced of its effectiveness, and determined to return to work. His grandmother, Meg, takes matters into her own hands and hires a physical therapist to stay at the ranch for six weeks, overriding Brand’s protests that he doesn’t have time.
Avery is a city girl from Michigan who took the job in Wyoming with an agenda of her own. She looks forward to the different surroundings, but she also wants to escape from an uncomfortable situation at home. She has a stalker who has left several threats, but the local authorities don’t take it seriously.
I loved the first meeting between the Merricks and Avery. Brand was blindsided that morning by his grandmother’s announcement and isn’t at all happy with the thought of someone interfering with his day. Family patriarch, Ham, is also against it, with the view that pain is something ranchers learn to live with. They are all shocked to discover that, rather than the muscular man they expected, the therapist is a slim, attractive woman. Avery is a bit taken aback by the hostility from her patient and his great-grandfather but is determined to change their minds and heal her patient.
I loved the development of the relationship between Brand and Avery. Brand thinks that it won’t be hard to send this city girl running. All he has to do is drag her into ranch life and watch her flounder. Avery is tenacious and sees his challenge and raises the stakes. I loved watching her dig right in and embrace everything thrown at her. It doesn’t take long for Brand to be impressed and decide to give her a chance. With the time they spend together, Avery sees past the grumpy Brand to the man who loves his family and his land. It was great to see Brand go from trying to chase Avery away to wishing he could find a way to make her stay.
The attraction that was there from the moment Brand and Avery met continued to build. They tried to resist at first. Brand knew she would leave after six weeks, and Avery wanted to keep things professional. However, the connection was too strong to resist. There were some sweet scenes as Brand showed Avery around the land that he loved. There were some funny times, such as their trip to town, where Avery gets a taste of small-town life. Then there were the times that showed the depth of the feelings that were growing between them. I loved seeing Brand share his memories of the night of the fire with Avery, something he hasn’t even done with his family. When Avery shared her trouble with Brand, it roused his protectiveness, further cementing his feelings for her. With Avery’s departure drawing closer, both ached to be together, but neither was ready to confess their feelings. The end was emotional as each longed for the other to say something that would keep them together before it was too late. Brand’s big moment was great, and I loved how he was oblivious to the people around them.
Part of the book also dealt with the reason Avery left Michigan. She thought she left the threats behind her, only to begin receiving creepy and threatening texts after she arrived in Wyoming. Though Avery tried to ignore them, remembering her treatment by the authorities in Michigan, the threats started to weigh on her. I loved Brand’s reaction when she told him, with that cowboy code of protectiveness kicking in. I especially liked his insistence on going to the local police chief. The difference in attitude was night and day, which gave Avery a little bit of peace of mind. An unexpected visitor brought along a twist to the situation. There were some very intense moments as Avery found herself in a life-or-death situation. I loved her determination to survive and her ability to think on her feet. The final confrontation was a nail-biter and kept me glued to pages until it was over.
A big part of the book was the Merrick family’s relationships. The love and respect that they had for each other were evident, and I enjoyed getting to know each one. Hammond, the family patriarch, was quite a character. Gruff and obstinate, his opinions were pretty well set in stone. I loved his pride in his family and their land, and how his stories wove a spell around Avery. I also like watching her earn his respect and admiration. Another family member I loved was Aunt Liz. She’s a talented photographer, and though she seems cold and aloof at first, that soon changes. There is a fantastic scene between Liz and Avery that changes both their lives. I was also intrigued by Chet, who obviously has a thing for Liz, though she doesn’t see it. I hope to see more of them in future books. However, my favorite family members were Casey and Jonah. They are the typical younger brothers who know just what buttons to push when it comes to Brand. They caught on quickly to the attraction building between Brand and Avery and took multiple opportunities to tease and interfere. It was fun to watch the actions and reactions among them. I can’t wait to read their stories.
Ah, loved this book so much I couldn’t put it down and devoured it in 1 day. I spend the entire read with a big smile on my face and am in love with both Brand Merrick and Avery Grant. I honestly could not get enough of these two and this wonderful new cast of characters! So GOOD! My Kind of Cowboy was such a fantastic read and I’m super excited to see what’s next from this author. Happy reading everyone!!
A wonderful slow burn romance set on a ranch and small town in the foothills of the Teton Mountain range of Montana. Avery is a physiotherapist charged with helping rancher Brand to get wholly back on his feet He doesn’t think he needs her help after all he is up and walking even if it is with a limp He may be stubborn but he is about to meet a woman just as stubborn and she soon has him doing what she wants and when danger from her city past catches up with her Brand will step up to keep her safe The thing that really made this story is the other members of the Merrick family especially Brands brothers. This is a slow burn romance that will leave you wanting more
