I was abducted by the alien puppy pound.Thrown into a cage and sold as a galactic pet.An alien captain has made me his beloved pet.Things have happened that I can’t live with.Things too terrible to mention here…
This is a science fiction book with a lot of world-building. As with most science fiction novels, a moral question is being asked of the reader:
“When does a sentient being qualify for equality in society?”
A human woman from NYC is abducted and as most would agree, abduction is something that you would never want to happen to you, but the author clearly states this is going to happen in the blurb. The MC is put into an alien cage where she and some other women beat each other up, because as we all know when it comes down to it, it is always survival of the fittest in those kinds of life or death circumstances. Humanity continually fights over resources, food, water, etc. killing each other for it. The author clearly, almost painfully, does this to demonstrate humanity in a microcosm. That we as a species are ridiculous fighting over our resources and allowing some people to flourish while others suffer based on prejudice.
Then the female MC is bought by an alien master who treats her literally like a beloved pet. He buys her a lot of human food and curious outfits. The alien species have a very bizarre culture surrounding sex, but nothing too dark. It was more eerie than dark.
The big question throughout the book is whether or not the human MC is a sentient being or not. This is a constant struggle of the female human MC to be heard and seen as an equal and the alien male MC to trust his instincts that she is sentient, that all of her behaviors are not merely coincidence.
By the end of the novel, it turns into a big political conspiracy of the alien species that they knew humans were sentient all along but wanted to enhance their gene pool. The alien male MC feels terrible about what he has done to this human woman, ‘his pet’, and literally spends all of his money to buy the human female MC a translator so that he can speak to her properly. He is devasted that he has bought a sentient being. And because of this he no longer treats her like a pet, she is able to do whatever she wants, within reason on his ship and she roams about freely. But the big problem is that the human female MC cannot be free in the galaxy. It would be like a talking dog in our society on Earth, the dog could not work or hold down a job or be free. And that is the whole point of the book, that a human in the galaxy, our backward ways, we are no more evolved compared to other alien species than a dog would be in our own civilization on Earth. That a human out in the galaxy is no better than a pet on Earth.
From this point in the book, the alien male MC has no idea what to do with his ‘pet’ and when the opportunity comes, the alien male MC and his crew spend all their money because they also feel remorseful that they treated her like a pet to return the human female MC to Earth so that she will not be sold off as a slave as some kind of galactic law has changed.
Some reviewers have claimed the book is misogynist and disrespectful of women, I found nothing of the sort. Quite the contrary as the alien male MC is overly attentive to his pet and follows all the guidelines for human pets. And once her alien captor realizes she isn’t a pet, he gives her her freedom and all the money he has to get her home. He also allows her access to her son which he, as in his alien culture, had sent back to his home planet.
The book ends with a trick on the reader, that this was the actual book that brought her alien captor back to her. That we were reading her own account, some of which the alien male MC even denies happened at the end of the book, but the human female MC replies, “Well sex sells.” She is clearly happy to see her son and her former alien master, so the book then asks the question,
How much of this story was real and how much was made up to sell books?
In my opinion, this was real science fiction, about a real (ish) abduction story about being taken by aliens, not a fantasy romance.

This was such an interesting book… First things first, I gave 4 stars because I found that the heroine rationalized and accepted the whole situation straight from the beginning, which I didn’t like much. She had no problem being a pet since her captor was gorgeous… Ignoring this fact, I believe that this was a distinctive and remarkable story in pets’ universe… There is a pet, but it is handled gently and with care. There are slight punishments, but no severe/humiliating punishments. Her master is actually reasonable and gentle, not a savage demanding her absolute submission. In general, this book is “gentler” and lighter in comparison to the norm, and thus I liked it very much! The world-building is simple, the characters are quite interesting, the plot is well-written, there is romance, steamy scenes and much drama that is well-rendered. I needed those last 2 pages, since I was really worried that the author wouldn’t mention if the heroine would meet again with her child and Seb. But, everyone got their closure 🙂

Ensly loves her life in New York. Being abducted by aliens is the last thing she ever expects. When she wakes up on a ship in the company of three other women, she can hardly believe what’s happened. Then she meets her new master, Seb, and everything changes.
So this was an unusual book for me. I admit, the story made me a little uncomfortable at times, but I put it aside because this is an interesting idea. Even though it was weird, I did like the relationship between Seb and Ensly. It was cute in the beginning though, again, I found there were some parts I thought were awkward.
The ending had a sweet feeling to it, and throughout the entire story, it was easy to sympathize with both characters. Since we’re told the story through both Seb and Ensly’s eyes, we get to really understand what each goes through.
Very interesting story if you’re looking for an unusual erotica piece.
Narration worked well for the story. Both narrators did a fantastic job of bringing the characters to life.

My Human Pet by Olympia Black is an alien abduction romance that I listened to on audio narrated by Amber Lee Connors and James Ford.
This is Olympia’s debut novel and she knocked it out of the park. I loved the relationship between Seb and Ensley. I look forward to reading more of Olympia’s work in the future.
Amber and James did an amazing job on the narration. They really brought the story to life.
A note from the author “This is a science fiction novel with intimate scenes some listeners may find uncomfortable.”

I wasn’t overly fond of the main characters n this book, but most especially Ensley. She came across as judgemental, mean and rather condensing, this even more so when she was interacting with the other women who were captured.
Overall i found the book a bit dry, a few scenes were dubcon mostly because both species lacked communication, so she couldn’t express her feelings with words that he could understand, and his judgement was based on second hand information and what has been fed to their species since humans were taken.
It was however interesting to see how things came together, once the communication issue was solved, but because that was right at the end of the book, it all went by in a bit o a rush.
I’ll probably give this author another go, to see if any of her other stories leave me with a better impression.

2 1/2 Stars…
This is the first book I’ve read by Olympia Black, but regardless of the rating, I would try her again. Seb and Ensley were not particularly likable characters to begin with, though pretty well developed. Some of the steamier scenes were dubious consent at best, gang rape at worse. The chemistry between the 2 was there but odd, because of the lack of communication. The ending was rather abrupt, almost whiplash. The positives, the world building of the Empire was interesting and the book moves fairly quickly. Just overall, uhh.

Enjoyable book full of action, plot, emotion and plenty of heat and romance between the two main characters. I just wished the ending was more final in some ways. I received a free copy of this book. This review was posted voluntarily.

Alien abduction romances can sometimes be pretty predictable. This one however, takes the pet angle more literally than others. I think it adds to the uniqueness of the storyline. Also, the author has built a whole society with rules and societal norms that establish how pets are treated and used. The fact that Seb and Ensley fall in love despite her language barriers and his races beliefs of human’s inferiority gives this story a certain pathos and complexity.

Very well written dark story. The plot is good with plenty of twists and turns, steamy sex, and sometimes consent issues. Hensley is the human pet for Imperial Captain Seb and their chemistry even though they didn’t understand each other. Very enjoyable story. This novel was fairly well written and very well edited, with few if any typos that I caught in the ARC version of this manuscript. The world building of the Empire was fairly good. The characterization was excellent for an erotica, with both hero and heroine being sympathetic characters. There was a romantic relationship which developed between the hero and heroine of this novel, but the romantic relationship had a somewhat ambiguous ending. The plot and pacing was excellent, with me turning pages rapidly in order to find out what was going to happen next. There was a high amount of angst experienced by the heroine, but it was entirely understandable with her situation. The stakes are not very high in this novel until the end, when the hero is racing to get the heroine onto the only ship taking human pets back to Earth. However, I still enjoyed this erotica. This novel contains the Human Trafficking trope so popular is sci-fi romance and erotica. The characterization of this novel was five stars. The development of the romantic relationship rated two stars for my romance novel loving self. The world building rated four stars, and the plot and pacing also rated four stars. The combined score for this sci-fi erotica was therefore four stars. I recommend this novel to readers who enjoy well written sci-fi erotica with sympathetic protagonists. I will not be buying myself a keeper copy of this novel, simply because I prefer erotic romance novels to erotica.

This is a very well written story; I loved the plot. It’s a slight twist to the usual alien abducts human for a pet story. There is plenty of steam, there is dubious consent issues. The main characters have great chemistry even though for most of book they couldn’t really understand each other. It’s told from dual points of view and the author goes through the same scenes twice telling it from each of the main characters points of view. A really enjoyable book.
