A charming, warmhearted novel from the author of the New York Times bestseller A Man Called Ove. Elsa is seven years old and different. Her grandmother is seventy-seven years old and crazy–as in standing-on-the-balcony-firing-paintball-guns-at-strangers crazy. She is also Elsa’s best, and only, friend. At night Elsa takes refuge in her grandmother’s stories, in the Land-of-Almost-Awake and the … Land-of-Almost-Awake and the Kingdom of Miamas, where everybody is different and nobody needs to be normal.
When Elsa’s grandmother dies and leaves behind a series of letters apologizing to people she has wronged, Elsa’s greatest adventure begins. Her grandmother’s instructions lead her to an apartment building full of drunks, monsters, attack dogs, and old crones but also to the truth about fairy tales and kingdoms and a grandmother like no other.
My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry is told with the same comic accuracy and beating heart as Fredrik Backman’s bestselling debut novel, A Man Called Ove. It is a story about life and death and one of the most important human rights: the right to be different.more
If you want to meet unpredictable characters, this is your text, but this is also a text which will stay with you after the last page.
best if you read the whole series so that you know all the people involved in this story. #1 and #3 are the best.
It moved too slowly for me. Stopped to read something else.
I loved this book on so many levels. So good!
an interesting book that I almost need to go back and read again to figure out some of the twists and connections that were set up earlier in the text.
Interesting characters from the eyes of an 8 year old.
I absolutely loved this book; the way fairytales mirrored reality was so fascinating. Especially since you hear the fairytale first, then as you learn about the characters you do the math and it’s really cool. Also, it’s a great way to get perspective on people – there is always a reason people are the way they are, why they do what they do. Learn the reason and your view of that person may change entirely.
I was easily invested in this story.
I love this book. The characters are believable and and the plot is great.
I loved this book!! The story was so original. Real life heartbreak mixed with the supernatural and so much witty dialogue.
I loved this book SO much! There were whole paragraphs that I wanted to pound into my brain to remember forever. Parts that made me laugh, parts that made me cry and parts that made me reach out to my loved ones to read this book!
Loved this book
Loved this book, fun easy read but unusual story line that kept me interested
A very imaginative & well told story. The characters pull you in. Loved it!
This is another heartfelt story by the author . Must read .
Not at all what I expected It was quite odd It reminded me of Neil Gamin
I just enjoyed the story. The characters were well developed and their connections were a revelation as the story progressed. The Grandmother was the main character’s best friend. She helped her deal with the abuses that children experience from peers today and gave her the tools to become a confident and independent person. The lives that were intertwined by the Grandmothers actions throughtout her career became important influences, helping the main character deal with her Grandmother’s death.
I didn’t finish the book. It was difficult to relate to the characters for me.
I’m usually not a fiction reader. Saying that, I very much enjoyed the author’s writing style and the book as a whole. A nice break from my normal reading. Insightful.
I cried often while reading this touching story every grandmother should read.
What a different type of read. Totally unpredictable yet touching. I really enjoyed it.
