When her mother dies, Corrie Bell Hollister is left with four younger siblings to care for. Hoping to find her uncle, she arrives in Gold Rush territory determined to be strong and make her own way. But her long-lost father’s so-called land of promise is a dangerous place, and she has never felt so alone.
This was a really touching story with an interesting set of characters. The diary was told from a young girl and kept you entertained. Didn’t want to stop reading!
Gold Rush California is no place to raise kids, but the Lord guides them all to a reunion of love. A great story of families that get 2nd chances and take them. Their faith carried them even when they weren’t sure it would.
Corrie is traveling across the country when her mother passes away and leaves her to care for her younger siblings. When they arrive in California they meet kind people who go out of their way to help the children locate an Uncle. Corrie’s mother always believed in God, but will God help them and show Corrie that he is still with them in California??
I liked this book. Some things were not really settled, but I’m sure they will be in future books about the same characters.
A story that I didn’t place much hope in reading all the way through, was dashed within the first chapter. Each chapter I told myself just one more and then I will quit.
The writing style of Phillips and Pella has always been pretty awesome. Back in the day, there was a series called The Heather Hills of Stonewycke. That placed in my mind the magical storytelling capabilities of this pair. Together, they weave a story that keeps you yearning for more. Twists and turns that are unexpected. The descriptions that place you there amongst the California landscape and wondering what type of adventure is following.
The story is about Corrie Hollister who is currently a journalist. Her uncle, Nick, convinces her that her journals are worth publishing. After giving in the idea to a publisher things begin to happen, and the story contained is the journals of Corrie Belle Hollister. The nice thing, it is written in a story form and not a journal with entries. The story seamlessly blends together.
Definitely well worth a read.
This book was not what I expected, but easy to read and keep me turning pages. I enjoyed a different type story.
I enjoyed the story – a nice , clean story without romance, but engaging.
Convincing sense of voice.
I really enjoyed the premise of this well-written book. The characters seemed realistic, and there were no easy outs and simple solutions. I highly recommend it to most readers. My only hesitation would be in recommending it to people like me. I prefer to have my stories end at the end of my book, and don’t tend to care for series books. I didn’t realize this was a series book until the end. That being said, it was still a great read and I don’t regret getting it.
This book was one of the best I’ve read in a long time.No matter the set backs they kept going. Strong women of another era was inspirational to me

Pure hearted and sweet
Love this book. It was very original and the characters were wonderfully portrayed. Love the story can’t wait to get a hold of the next booking line.
Great story and wonderful story telling. The author is to be commended for a good, clean story that holds your attention, even if you are an avid reader. It doesn’t feel like “the same old story line”. Very enjoyable.

Enjoyed it so much stayed awake till 4am then started next in series, think I’ve read four. Very inspiring!
Well-written use of God’s actions in realistic situations with well-developed characters
Book was most enjoyable and I loved the characters. Written by a “child” as a journal as she went through difficult changes in her life. Ended well but looks like more to read about these characters in future books
enjoyed reading this book.
Well written. Really enjoyed this book.
