C.J. is a wonderful writer..her gift is to show young people a way to deal with their issues… i.e. issues regarding what others have done to bring you down..Crysta,our heroine, has had problems all of her life, problems not created by her, but created by the adults in her life, problems that have caused her trust issues, but once Crysta understands that her lack of trust can be resolved by people who care about her, she has to figure out a way to overcome her problem with trust, and accept the help and love that is offered. We all know that isn’t an easy thing to do. Our biggest problem is deciding WHO we can trust, and this is Crysta’s situation in this story.. I’m not a writer and my words cannot express the feelings and the relationship I formed with these characters..C.J. is extremely gifted as a wordsmith and in getting her message across; however, her stories are really entertaining without the message.
Her books are for all ages. If you want to read solely for entertainment, she is the author for you..If you want to find an author who can relate to you, she is the author for you.. I find C.J.’s books to be some of the best..
I can’t believe I’ve had this series on my TBR pile and in my Kindle for over a year before I finally pulled them up and read them. I’m astounded to realize how this series has affected me for the good. It is so well written and full of magic, imagination and creativity. I’m totally blown away! The protagonist, Crysta, is a very strong character. Equally as strong is her fated mate, Jareth. I also love the many and various magical characters developed within these pages. Also, to the contrary, the devious characters who had embedded themselves close to Crysta lying to her and weaving spells around her to keep power over her, had my insides boiling. I found it hard to think that she kept going along with their evil remaining oblivious no matter how many characters had tried to convince her of their deceit. I suppose if you realized that you have been lied to long enough by those who were supposed to love you then you can find it hard to believe anyone and anything after that. I have experienced this first hand in my own personal life so it really isn’t that hard to believe her reactions. I also appreciated the author‘s candid notes revealing her own personal experiences with this subject, so it is completely believable that Crysta acted the way she did. This is a wonderful story that all lovers of fantasy at any age would find most enjoyable and heartfelt. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in this series and it will NOT remain on my TBR pile for more than one second.
This book had kind of a slow start compared to My Fair Assassin, but after just finishing it I can honestly say I found it to be better than the first book. There were much more drama, romance, conflicts, twists and turns than I anticipated and I am both glad and relieved.
I was a bit let down starting to read since it felt like there weren’t much happening. It was pretty much practice with Crysta’s magic and seeing the relationship take place. Even though that particular aspect had my toes curling, it wasn’t the same heat or excitement between them that I felt from the first book. So I was afraid that My Fair Traitor wasn’t going to measure up. Thank god I was wrong! As soon as the action started I was hooked! I loved all the different conflicts and how it played out with Crysta’s and Jareth’s relationship. Although, it might have been a smudge too much conflicts taking place, but not too overdone that it bothered me.
Sadly, there was things about Crysta that I felt actually was a bit too overdone. Her humorous remarks being one. In My Fair Assassin it was perfectly balanced with her more serious human and insecure side, so it didn’t take over or bug me that much. In this book it was just too much … well, simply just too much at times. It also annoyed me how she got special allies, friends, admirer/wooer and even a pet completely devoted to her with a snap of her fingers (metaphorical snap of course). There were no building or developing bonds. It just happened out of nowhere and straight away, which just was too unrealistic for me to get on board.
I make it seem like I didn’t like Crysta at all now, but quite the contrary. In some ways I liked her even more than in book one. Some secrets from her horrible upbringing was revealed and it really helped me understand her and feel for her better. I also really liked how her insecure side took the shape of jealousy and how that drama formed in the bond between her and Jareth. Before that the relationship was, not dull per say, but everything was always good between them and the dispute helped it be more relatable, complex and intriguing.
I don’t know if it was intentional or just complete accidental, but I loved the “history repeating itself” theme going on. I found it very cleverly written in there since the matter wasn’t right in the reader’s face but rather hidden between the lines. It might have been an accident and I don’t know if the next book is going to pick up on that theme, but I sure hope so. In short, it gave the story depth that the first book was lacking. And even if My Fair Traitor could be touched up a bit in pace and development, I am ecstatic over how good it was. It blew my expectations away! I only hope My Fair Imposter does so too.
I am voluntarily reviewing a complimentary review copy of this book.
