“An edge-of my sear immersion into historical events…No study of Alexander Hamilton would be complete without reading this book.” —Karen White, New York Times bestselling author“The best book of the year!” —Kate Quinn, New York Times bestselling author of The Alice NetworkWife, Widow, and Warrior in Alexander Hamilton’s quest for a more perfect unionFrom the New York Times bestselling authors … Hamilton’s quest for a more perfect union
From the New York Times bestselling authors of America’s First Daughter comes the epic story of Eliza Schuyler Hamilton—a revolutionary woman who, like her new nation, struggled to define herself in the wake of war, betrayal, and tragedy. Perfect for fans of Ron Chernow’s biography Alexander Hamilton and fans of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton: the Musical.
In this haunting, moving, and beautifully written novel, Dray and Kamoie used thousands of letters and original sources to tell Eliza’s story as it’s never been told before—not just as the wronged wife at the center of a political sex scandal—but also as a founding mother who shaped an American legacy in her own right.
A general’s daughter…
Coming of age on the perilous frontier of revolutionary New York, Elizabeth Schuyler champions the fight for independence. And when she meets Alexander Hamilton, Washington’s penniless but passionate aide-de-camp, she’s captivated by the young officer’s charisma and brilliance. They fall in love, despite Hamilton’s bastard birth and the uncertainties of war.
A founding father’s wife…
But the union they create—in their marriage and the new nation—is far from perfect. From glittering inaugural balls to bloody street riots, the Hamiltons are at the center of it all—including the political treachery of America’s first sex scandal, which forces Eliza to struggle through heartbreak and betrayal to find forgiveness.
The last surviving light of the Revolution…
When a duel destroys Eliza’s hard-won peace, the grieving widow fights her husband’s enemies to preserve Alexander’s legacy. But long-buried secrets threaten everything Eliza believes about her marriage and her own legacy. Questioning her tireless devotion to the man and country that have broken her heart, she’s left with one last battle—to understand the flawed man she married and imperfect union he could never have created without her…

This historical novel is based upon letters & documents written by General Alexander Hamilton that his wife, Elizabeth, collected after he was killed in a duel with Aaron Burr. The book is written in her voice … hence the title “Dear Mr. Hamilton.” Historic timelines & stories help the reader understand the life of Alexander Hamilton & the creative intellect he used to shape governmental institutions in the United Sates that we often take for granted today. The family suffered personal tragedy, calamity of war & illness and yet the book ended with hopefulness for our country.
Great way to get history
One of the most powerful books I have ever read. Eliza is a woman born into turmoil and severe trial, living through one of the most tumultuous periods of human history. Yet she managed to bear the fruit of love in a variety of forms—faithfulness in marriage, devotion in motherhood, and generosity in society. A very inspiring epic tale.
Wonderful look into history through the eyes of Alexander Hamilton’s wife.
Humanizing portrayal of Alexander Hamilton and his genius seen through the eyes of his illustrious wife. The politically painful times reminiscent of today and the surprising claims made about Hamilton’s fidelity. Thomas Jefferson’s pernicious use of his privately owned newspaper to attack and undermine his opponents where one wonders how we all missed this information in school. The great romance between the Hamilton’s and the swirling personal and political battles fought for love, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Quite the saga.
Hard to imagine that at the beginning of our country politics was just as crazy as now. Loved how the book read. Felt like you were there. An amazing love story. Also was nice watching Eliza grow and figure out how to forgive Hamilton.
historical Fiction about Eliza Hamilton, her husband, and her life. easy read meticulous research. very interesting.
I loved this book written in Eliza Hamilton’s POV. It was very informative and a pleasure to read!
A bit concerned that certain liberties were taken on a real historical figure, the main character. These things COULD have happened be cause both individual were in the same circles of society.. Some folks will assume the relationships described were true.
I recommend this novel about Eliza Hamilton’s life with Alexander. I was moved by her dedication to a brilliant but flawed man.
I just re-read this book, and it was even better than the first time. The authors weave history in with a very readable and entertaining narrative, and it transports the reader back in time. If you love historical fiction, this book is a must read.
If you didn’t love her already– Eliza Hamilton was an amazing woman
Loved every page.
This is one of the best books I’ve read in years! The narrator never works to make the reader cry, but the tears come naturally from the real saddness of the real events. I think this book makes Alexander Hamilton come alive more and shows his greatness far better than the currently popular play, and it perfectly catches the spirit of the time when democracy was so tenuous and endangered. We gain a depth of understanding about this tremendously complex genius that I find unparalled in biography. You won’t be sorry you took the time to read it.
I didn’t expect to enjoy this book, but found myself engrossed in the story.
I loved this book! I have read it three times, and each time I enjoy it more and more!
My Dear Hamilton is a captivating and intriguing read. This book is a long read at almost 700 pages, but it is well worth every page. The information is meticulously researched and gives a look at the birth of our country I’ve never had. Before picking up my My Dear Hamilton, I didn’t even know the name of Alexander Hamilton’s wife. After reading her story, I have an immense amount of respect for this woman who played a vital role in the establishment of our country. I’m pleased to say I have plans to read more of Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie’s historical fiction work.
Easy to understand about the Hamilton’s
