“An edge-of my sear immersion into historical events…No study of Alexander Hamilton would be complete without reading this book.” —Karen White, New York Times bestselling author“The best book of the year!” —Kate Quinn, New York Times bestselling author of The Alice NetworkWife, Widow, and Warrior in Alexander Hamilton’s quest for a more perfect unionFrom the New York Times bestselling authors … Hamilton’s quest for a more perfect union
From the New York Times bestselling authors of America’s First Daughter comes the epic story of Eliza Schuyler Hamilton—a revolutionary woman who, like her new nation, struggled to define herself in the wake of war, betrayal, and tragedy. Perfect for fans of Ron Chernow’s biography Alexander Hamilton and fans of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton: the Musical.
In this haunting, moving, and beautifully written novel, Dray and Kamoie used thousands of letters and original sources to tell Eliza’s story as it’s never been told before—not just as the wronged wife at the center of a political sex scandal—but also as a founding mother who shaped an American legacy in her own right.
A general’s daughter…
Coming of age on the perilous frontier of revolutionary New York, Elizabeth Schuyler champions the fight for independence. And when she meets Alexander Hamilton, Washington’s penniless but passionate aide-de-camp, she’s captivated by the young officer’s charisma and brilliance. They fall in love, despite Hamilton’s bastard birth and the uncertainties of war.
A founding father’s wife…
But the union they create—in their marriage and the new nation—is far from perfect. From glittering inaugural balls to bloody street riots, the Hamiltons are at the center of it all—including the political treachery of America’s first sex scandal, which forces Eliza to struggle through heartbreak and betrayal to find forgiveness.
The last surviving light of the Revolution…
When a duel destroys Eliza’s hard-won peace, the grieving widow fights her husband’s enemies to preserve Alexander’s legacy. But long-buried secrets threaten everything Eliza believes about her marriage and her own legacy. Questioning her tireless devotion to the man and country that have broken her heart, she’s left with one last battle—to understand the flawed man she married and imperfect union he could never have created without her…

I really liked this book.
I now interested reading more about Alexander Hamilton and other people from this time period
It was written well and fascinating in addition to being informative. I didn’t know much about Alexander Hamilton until I read this book. I would like to read a nonfiction book about him and learn more.
This was such a great book that told the story of not only Alexander Hamilton, but the beginning and rise of America through some very perilous times. Since this is Eliza Hamilton’s story, we get to see the historical events and Eliza and Alexander’s lives through her eyes. It was so fascinating that she was present and likely had a hand in many events of the Revolution and the founding of the country, even before she met Alexander. While tragedy and heartbreak struck her family many times, Eliza was able to keep contributing to her community and to the country long after Alexander was gone.
I loved how the authors wove the story together. There are many parallels between Eliza and Alexander’s marriage and family, the development of American government, and the political situation in America today. Everything is so interconnected in a way that is entertaining as a fictional story, yet fascinating with historical detail. The writing is superb, and I was eager to see what happened next all the way through the book. The Hamiltons did not lead a boring life!
Wonderful story of an historical figure, a woman of great strength.
Loved it!
Finding out the birth of our country from a woman’s point of view. History class never talks about the sacrifices made by the wives of our forefathers. This book was a selection from our ladies club. Worth the read!
made the making of our country so real. . . .
This was a look at the life and achievements of Alexander Hamilton through the eyes of his wife. Very family-oriented, yet with a piercing look at the early politics of the United States.
I enjoyed reading about Eliza Hamilton’s life before and after the tragic death of Alexander Hamilton. The story is both romantic and tragic. I think I learned more by reading this format—a novel with as much historical background that could be found about this relationship. I also learned more about Alexander Hamilton than I knew. I shall read the latest book about Hamilton next.
Excellent historical novel, better than any textbooks on the American Revolution or our founding fathers.
Written from the perspective of Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton, wife of Alexander Hamilton this is one of the best historical fictions, I have ever read about the
American Revolution, Very detailed aspects and a different slant on the men and women who were apart of forming the United States of America. Most books are centered on the founding fathers, but this book included the founding mothers and their interests also. I enjoyed the insight of author into the lives of the Hamiltons, exposing them as people with feelings; with the ability to be hurt by the past, present and yet still look forward unselfishly to preserving the future for not only their children, but other people’s freedom and a new nation being born.
The factious politics of the founding of the USA are not so far removed from the politics of 2018. No duels yet, but plenty of acrimony in both centuries of politics.
I loved this book as it completes my three -book obsession with Eliza and Alexander after see the musical Hamilton. My Dear Hamilton focuses on Eliza and her struggles throughout their marriage and for nearly 50 years after his death. She is the “best of women, the best of wives.”
Takes you back to the Founding Fathers & birth of our nation. We area allowed a personal view of the struggles (both men & women) during & after the Revolution — and particularly the lives of Alexander Hamilton & his family.
more entrtaining than most novels based on the early days of th republic
First of all, I always claimed that I wasn’t interested in historical fiction books. Then, I read one about WWII and loved it so much that I became obsessed. Due to the popularity of the play, Hamilton, I decided to read this one although I wasn’t interested in the American Revolution. WOW! I couldn’t put it down, read it quickly, and immediately read another about Alexander Hamilton to get another point of view. If you plan to see the play and don’t know much about the American Revolution, you must read this book!
Excellent fictionalized account of the life of Hamilton’s wife. Brings the people and time to real life
I was happy to learn more about Elizabeth Hamilton and her contributions to early America!
Must read to appreciate American history!
Well-wrtten story of Alexander Hamilton from his wife’s perspective.
I admit–I picked this up because of the connection with Alexander Hamilton, whom I am primarily familiar with because of the musical which I have not yet had the pleasure of viewing. Before that I vaguely knew he had something to do with the U.S. treasury, but didn’t realize he was actually interesting.
I was very impressed at how the character of Betsy -> Eliza changed/grew throughout the book. I definitely liked her better at some times of her life as presented in the book than others. Alexander too for that matter, but he’s not the main character in this book.
This is historical fiction, and the history is very well fleshed out in this book. I was astonished what a small society the players in the American Revolution was. Everybody seemed to know everybody–or at least Eliza seemed to know everybody.
I realize that this is fiction, because Eliza did not leave much personal information behind (also addressed in the book), but I leave this book wishing I could meet her.
