Saving the world isn’t easy. It’s even harder when you’re only nine.Kelly Donovan used to be a nobody. Well, a smart nobody. Skipping ahead a year in school made her the smallest kid in fifth grade and a target for bullies in search of an easy mark. She tried to follow her father’s advice and ignore them, but it didn’t do any good. Escaping into her favorite comic books at least helped her … her through the day. Who needs friends anyway?
Sometimes, dreams find a way to come true, even if nobody asked them to.
Aliens bombard the Earth with gigantic glowing red crystals to restore its failing magnetic field. Soon after the seemingly benevolent invasion, Kelly discovers her wildest, happiest fantasy come to life: she has superpowers, along with roughly two percent of the population. Her strong good nature leads her to adopt the heroic persona of Übergirl. However, she has one major problem…
Her dad’s turning into a mad scientist.
It’s difficult to be a hero, especially when your father’s a bad guy.

Heartbreaking humor and Punucopia
I can’t think of any other story so funny and hurt so much. What a conundrum to face. Sadly easy to visualize a normal child with a bad parent. The tragic shock of the whole world just changing would have destroyed many.
First thing, this book is absolutely adorable. I almost felt like a kid again reading it. Great chuckles peppered in the storyline. The characters are so vivid and creative it made me think of the characters I loved growing up such as Ramona the Brave and others.
Kelly, the protagonist, is a smart, dainty little 9 year old redhead who has skipped a couple of grades in school. She is mercilessly bullied by by the popular girls.
Kelly shares a love of comics with her father and has just recently made a friend that shares that simple pleasure.
Her Father is a nice guy, but feels underappreciated at work. Her mom seems nice enough, but Kelly finds out, through conversations of her being bullied, the her mother was once a mean girl.
Her parents seem to be attentive and aloof all at the same time.
During one of the bully sessions, the kids leave her hanging in bookbag from a Football goalpost and this is when everything changes for her.
Alien crystals land all over the globe giving people abilites. Most people have one, but some could have more than one. It may be due to proximity. And not everyone gets them, that may be due to a unique trait in those people. Kelly was so close to a crystal when it landed that that she had multiple abilities. She could fly, super strong, etc.
She notices her father change (at a seemingly rapid pace), wild machinations, his appearance alters (facial features- Epic Chin of Pointiness! LOL), and his skills in everything increase exponentially. He becomes a “Mad Scientist” and begins to build his own “Lair” and has decided that he and Kelly are evil villains. The name he comes up with as her villain name is HILARIOUS- but I’m saving that for the reader to find out. That became a problem for Kelly. She was not a villain in her heart and dearly loves her father. Turns out there is something going on with her mother, but I will save that for you to find out in the book.
Kelly has to seek a solution to keep her father from imprisonment. He’s not completely evil, his intent is not to kill people but dominate them through mind control.
If you are looking for a cute story for yourself and something safe for a young one in your family, this is the book for you. You won’t regret it.
Such a fun and zany book. Grade school brainiac turns into a comic book superhero like something out of her comic books. The story was entertaining
and well presented that it kept my Attention.
Kelly thinks of herself as a smart nobody , who gets picked on because she got move up one grade. So when her father says that she should ignore him, I don’t think he meant for her to lose herself in her comic books. But when aliens try to help Earth, there is a side effect for Kelly and her father. She now has superpowers but the biggest problem is her dad is turning into something completely different a mad scientist. Even this is a younger group then for myslf. , it is a wonderful book, that will catch their imaginations, so find one and encourages that will love every minute of it.
This is one of those series you will enjoy reading with your child or by yourself.
5 out of 5 stars
What’s a girl going to do, Kelly is a smart girl a very smart girl . So smart in fact that she was moved up a grade and that’s where things start to get bad for her. Being the smallest in the class she is getting picked on by what I will call the mean girls . They have done everything to make her life miserable . Until the day comes when Kelly is at her lowest being hung up in a back pack . When aliens come to Earth with glowing red crystals . Kelly discovers that she has super powers. Which prompts her to become a super hero . She finds out how difficult it can be especially when her dad is becoming a bad guy.
What can I say about these characters . They are well written and you will fall in love with them . Kelly is such a sweet girl who has done nothing wrong except be smart. You will really feel for her . She is bullied every day cause she is younger and not the same as everyone else . I love how she grows as the story goes on and with the help of her best friend she really matures . Being a super hero is pretty cool too . You will cheer for her through out the book . Her parents are well there are things that come out that will make you want to slap them lol . They are quirky but they are also sinister in their own way . Paige is her best friend and actually Kelly’s champion , they are the same but not the same . I love them together .
This is a middle school age book but i seriously think that any parent would love to read it along with them . The author really tackles a few things that happen in school . Bullying being the hot topic at the beginning of this story . He doesn’t dumb it down , he treats it very well . The author really what can happen when it happens . This isn’t a heavy bullying story . Its kind of like the main characters back story and it kind of lays ground work for when she becomes a super hero . This book is great for those who are a little bit older in middle grades . The story is complex and your kids won’t want to put it down . There are some areas that will make you want to wrap Kelly up and keep her safe . Then there are the times you are laughing and screaming go Kelly go, especially the scene with the mean girls after she got her super powers . I can’t wait to jump into book 2 and see where Uber Girl goes and how will she get her parents back from the dark side . So add this book to your kids reading list for 2020 . You read along with them, you will love it .
This is going to be a great series. Ubergirl is Kelly Donavon a very small nine year old who skipped a grade in school. Does this help her heck no. The mean girls click has decided that she’s a great target. This has all kinds of action great characters and Laugh’s.
If my kids were in school they would end up with the whole series. This book hit close to home for me because I was the shortest in school and a nerd so I know the bullying aspect well.
Nine year old Kelly is a nerd. She loves comics, doing homework and would never dream of disobeying her parents. Unfortunately this means she’s the target of the school bullies. That is until the aliens arrive. Exposed to an alien crystal, Kelly becomes super strong, super fast and now, she can fly. However with super abilities come super problems, like the fact her dad has become a mad scientist.
While Kelly’s world now seems to resemble a comic book, the problems she faces are all to real. Becoming a superhero doesn’t make trying to balance her love for her dad and the need to stop his evil plans any easier. An awesome read with some fairly heavy aspects, done in a thoroughly entertaining way. Can’t wait to read the next one.
this book was really great! she is a very smart young girl who advanced a grade. so now she is being bullied cause of this. than something happens that gives her super powers. read to find out what happens.
I enjoy this authors work and although he went younger with the audience I very much enjoyed it! It was fun and cute and there’s a little bit sad but its a very good book for kiddos.
Kelly is 9 years old and when a meteor strikes earth things are sooo different for her. She’s got super powers and someone who was bullied its a big deal for her. The downside is it affected her Dad as well and well it turned him into a super villain. In a way thats really sad. Matthew Fox turns his stories into something that we can completely relate to and in this case a parent who isn’t what they should be to their child. I wont say much more but I really loved the story and I think most can relate to it on some level. I recommend!
Kelly Donovan was a smart little nobody that skipped a grade. Dealing with school bullies are the least of her worries when aliens drop huge crystals onto Earth. It causes Kelly to get powers but unfortunately, her father has a bad side effect to the powers. He becomes evil.
