Hold on to your hats: The authors who brought you the New York Times bestseller My Plain Jane, which Booklist praised as “delightfully deadpan” (starred review) and Publishers Weekly called “a clever, romantic farce” (starred review), are back with another irreverent historical adventure. Welcome to 1876 America, a place bursting with gunslingers, outlaws, and garou—better known as werewolves.… with gunslingers, outlaws, and garou—better known as werewolves.
And where there are garou, there’re hunters: the one and only Calamity Jane, to be precise, along with her fellow stars of Wild Bill’s Traveling Show, Annie Oakley and Frank “the Pistol Prince” Butler.
After a garou hunt goes south and Jane finds a suspicious-like bite on her arm, she turns tail for Deadwood, where there’s talk of a garou cure. But rumors can be deceiving—meaning the gang better hightail it after her before they’re a day late and a Jane short.
In this perfect next read for fans of A Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue, bestselling authors Cynthia Hand, Jodi Meadows, and Brodi Ashton bring their signature spark to the side-splittin’, whopper-filled (but actually kind of factual?) tale of Calamity Jane.

Book 266 towards my goal of 280! 5/5 stars for this Historical Fantasy! What do you get when you cross Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, the Pistol Prince, Annie Oakley…….and werewolves? Add a lot of comedy, fourth wall breaks, and sayings/pop culture references and you get My Calamity Jane! Love the cover, the characters, and the narration!
This is a fantastic standalone! Love the characters, though I didn’t think I would get as hooked as I became to them! I finished this in a matter of days, which says something since this is more than 500 pages! One of the funniest, LOL books I have read this year!
The twists and turns this took was exciting and kept me wanting to see what would happen next!
Pick up this one, as well as the other Janes these authors wrote! Wonderful writing partnership that flows off the pages effortlessly!
My Calamity Jane did not have me cracking up like the previous two, but it was entertaining and I think the narrator did a good job. My favorite character was Annie. Her personality and quirks shine through and I was excited most for her storyline. The authors continued artistic license with history is clever and fun.
I am a HUGE fan of this imaginative series that reenvisions the lives of historical characters, both real and fictional, placing them in magical worlds where things play out in unexpected ways. MY CALAMITY JANE takes readers to the lawless Wild West where Jane has made a name for herself doing “wondrous feats with the bullwhip” and she’s part of Bill Hickok’s traveling show. Jane’s past is troubled and she ran away from home at a young age, so Bill has become something of a surrogate father to her and she considers him and his son, Frank Butler, to be her family. In this version of the Wild West, there are garou aka werewolves running loose and wreaking havoc and Jane and company hunt these “woofs” to try and keep them from hurting innocents. When things don’t go to plan during one of these hunts, Jane runs once again, this time to Deadwood where she must confront her past. Not without the help of her friends, though, which now include a sassy sharpshooter named Annie Oakley.
This book is so incredibly smart and funny (the word play made me snort laugh on multiple occasions!) and I tip my cowboy hat to the authors for how much research they did into the characters and the time period and how well they fit their story into what actually happened. And I thank them for giving the characters a much happier ending than they got in real life! I’ve enjoyed the Lady Janies series so much and am sorry it’s over, but I’m excited to see what these three talented authors do with the Mary series they’re doing next.
I just adore these books – My Calamity Jane made up for all the things I didn’t love as much in My Plain Jane and was not far behind my love of My Lady Jane. This book was pure fun and was exactly the kind of joy I needed in my life with the current state of the world as it is. I loved the Western elements and the constant tongue-in-cheek writing. It’s campy in the best way, and I’m so here for the fierce, hilarious heroines and wild west werewolves.
