Mute is the first book in the Dragon Runners MC series as well as the debut novel for author ML Nystrom. I have been feeling in a rut lately and this book really sunk its claws into me. I fell hard, and I didn’t want the story to end. The storyline was well developed, and I was hooked from the very beginning.
In this story, Kat has had a rough childhood and is doing the best she can to put herself through nursing school. She lives paycheck to paycheck and was looking for a new job. Luckily, Kat was able to get a new job at the River’s Edge Bar, which is owned and run by the Dragon Runners MC. Mute is the MCs enforcer and works at the bar as the bouncer. He is unable to speak due to a horrible accident when he was younger. Mute and Kat have fought their attraction to each other but eventually was unable to ignore their pull on each other.
Absolutely loved this story and can’t wait for Stud, the next book in the series!
5+ Hearts!
A brilliant start to a new series, and new author to me.

A super start to this a new series from this author and I am primed and ready to press one click as soon as the next book becomes available. I love an MC series, I wish I could put my finger on why exactly but I have no idea, there is just something about these insanely alpha males that pushes every single one of my buttons, so to say that I was a happy as a pig in the proverbial is an underestimation…. I was delighted.
Mute was everything I wanted to read and it was delivered with a consideration that made me feel not just comfortable but confident that the characters would be everything I wanted them to be.
I really appreciated the fact that author gave time to develop not just the relationship between Mute and Kat but also the who setting, the club and the members and how that dynamic works for each and every one of them. This is a group that is bonded by want, not by familiar ties but by trust and respect to form a family that stands together no matter what and I thought that the author brought that across so well.
Kat was financially down on her luck in many respects, and in desperate need of a job so she accepts a position working the bar at the MC club, it might not have been her first choice of position but it didn’t take long for her to find that within the walls of the club is a group of people that she could relate to and that quickly started to matter to her and her to them. Well, all except one or so it would seem because Mute the club enforcer was playing his cards very close to his chest.
Mute was everything that being the club enforcer needed, a mountain of a man that wore his surly attitude with pride, he oozed intimidation and made no excuse for the fact that he did so, after all that as his job. But the feisty addition to the bar staff was pushing all the right buttons and he was loathed to do anything to put paid to the situation.
But when trouble comes knocking, could he or would he protect her as his own?
If I have anything negative to say it would be that I would have liked a little more time with the pair of them, the book read quickly and that had me kicking my heels somewhat. But what I read was well written and thoroughly entertaining.
Rating: 4.5 Stars
Katrina Vega is trying to juggle a lot of things. Betsey is a character that piqued my interest in what this MC is all about. I think I just found a new one to follow. Someone else that intrigued me was Stud. I can’t say that he or Betsey could be considered secondary characters because they seemed so much a part of what was going on.
One thing I liked about this story was that the author chose to write this story in the first person. We get more of a personal perspective about the other characters. I was intrigued with how the author portrayed Mute. Certainly not what I expected but it became a very pleasant surprise. It was a great way to get me hooked. Once I started, it was very difficult to walk away.
This may seem a bit one sided since Katrina seems to be doing all the talking. But Mute has a way of making himself heard. Another thing that I liked was that we don’t have a hookup right away. This author knows how to build her story first and then everything that comes later is just a yummy topping on a really good cake – or a pint of your favorite ice cream.
There is an ending to this story but I didn’t get the impression that it was one that said “The End”. And that made me happy since I’m not done with this series yet. In the Acknowledgements the author thanks some people. And if you enjoyed this book as much as I did then you might want to send up thanks as well.
I was not compensated nor was I required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
Wait!? It’s over? Please say it isn’t over! Ahh. Mute is every single thing I love about MC romance. It’s raw, gritty, sweet. It’s everything. I really didn’t want to leave it. This will be one I read over and over and over again! Mute is everything. I honestly am speechless when it comes to him. He’s so perfect it’s not even funny. He’s rough and mean, yet he’s also sweet and protective. He tried his hardest to push Kat away, it just didn’t work. Both were drawn to each other like a moth to a flame.
Kat is such a strong woman. She’s had a crap life and is doing everything she can go make it better. Mute is the same. He’s had a crap life and now is content to just take care of everyone. Together they shine brighter than a star. The man who can’t speak and the woman who wishes she were invisible. Gah. I can’t fully explain how much I loved this book. It just feels different from the run of the mill MC books out now, a good different. The best kind of different. The writing was just seamless. The characters, probably the best MC family I’ve read yet. Betsey, Mackie, Brick, Stud. Just to name a few of my favorites. All had a roll in making sure Mute and Kat crushed the walls around each other and generally making everyone happy.
I say it a second time, or third, I LOVED this book! I want to see more with the family, and at the same time I want to flip back to page one and start Mute all over again. Every girl is going to want a Mute, I’m claiming this hard man as my own.
It was on the fence about this book and I was torn pretty much down the middle about it. To start I was very enticed by the concept behind this book. The idea for the hero was fresh, exciting and I felt very unique. I went in wanted to like Mute and mostly I did but there were also times that I did not. I could understand his desire to push Kat away, but I could not approve or enjoy how he went about it. Kat was for the most part very likable until again the above situation arose. To me her reaction was very much the opposite of what you would have expected from her personality and mannerisms. I just don’t know. This is beginning to turn up again and again in books and I must say that it is a trend I do not like. Otherwise I thought there were some very cute and sweet moments in the book and I loved the chemistry between the characters.
This is the first book in a new series from this author, and what a fantastic introduction this is. Kat is a feisty character, who makes the most of what life throws at her. Mute is the enforcer for the MC, and I love the way in which Kat dealt with the fact that he could not speak. This is a well written story which is filled with action, and is a sweet entertaining read, which had me totally captivated throughout, and I cannot wait to read the next book in this series, and I highly recommend this authors’ work for all MC lovers.
Katrina hasn’t had an easy life, and it seems to just keep getting harder. When she gets lucky and meets Betsy, who is willing to give her a new job working at her bar, she just knows that maybe just maybe things are starting to look up. For the most part things get better; she has more than a dollar to her name now. At the same time, the bar she is working at belongs to an MC, and they have issues all of their own, so Kat just tries to stay out of the way and do her job. Mute doesn’t need the attraction that he feels for the new bartender, nothing good comes from relationships and he is better off by himself. But when Kat gets into a few situations that are not of her own making, Mute is right there making sure she makes it out ok. Will Mute be able to open up and trust again? Or will it be too late and Kat gets snapped up by another brother?
This was a really good MC story. This was my first read by the author, but it will not be my last. This was a slow burn read, which made it a bit different from other MC books, as those are normally wham bam thank you ma’am. With drama, violence, danger, some really hot sexy times and a story that kept my interest, I give this 5 stars.
good book
Sweet and romantic… can’t judge a person until you know them!
There’s just something about the MC lifestyle, the idea of family, that feeling of belonging, being someone’s old lady and I mean sure can’t forget those club bunnies, they need some love too. For me, its all about the alpha men who you can’t help but fall in love with. And yes their bikes too. I mean sure Mute comes off rude and cold but no matter how big and scary he might be, there’s a softness and warmth there.
With a past like his, I understand his reservations and attitude towards Kat. She’s typically too soft and innocent for his world.. especially involving herself with a man like him. So he tries not to go there. He doesn’t see her lasting around him or his fellow bikers anyway. Yet he couldn’t be more wrong. He underestimates her. Which I liked about her character. It’s true she is kind and sweet but her past made her strong. She’s tougher than she looks. No matter how much she tried in the beginning to cloak herself with invisibility, shes finds a place among her new family and steals the hearts of those around her.
“When looks at you, I see a man who likes you and wants you.”
“When Mute looks at you, I see a man who needs you and needs you bad. Needs you so bad it consumes him every day.”
Mutes letter to Kat, his prayer to God and the ending….. it was beautiful and sad…it made me cry. Old man Mackie will forever be one of my favorites. Mute was right…he’s not a good man and he doesn’t promise to be one but for Kat, he would die for her, no question about that. “He loves long and he loves hard and he loves complete, but he don’t love easy.”
I’ve read hundreds but this is really really good.
This author grabbed my attention with her debut novel. MC with the name Dragon Runners I had to see what they were all about. The characters in here do a mighty fine job of taking you by the hand into their world with in the center of it Katrina “Kat” and Alec “Mute”. She lands a job in a bar to help pay plus hours great since she is finishing nursing school. The one in there that she thinks dislikes her is the one she can not ignore. Interesting he is and mighty fine with being one that would be hard to ignore. She is one that he can not ignore either and when the two get together it starts to simmer. The club is also one that is interesting with something going on that brings the fill for drama. Some parts the suspense mighty thick with you holding on too. The other characters become friends to ya with you loving every minute of the read hoping when you are finished you do not miss the next one.
Very exciting start to a series! For a new author I was pleasantly surprised at how well written Mute was. The storyline was a unique to me when compared to other biker series I have read. The author’s style was exciting and her attention to details was very impressive. On top of that, the characters were all well defined and just so darn lovable (well except for the bad guys but I will say even the bad characters were well thought out and perfect for the parts they played).
Mute and Kat had been through a lot in their youths and grew into adults determined to not let those times define them. They were both loners to a degree, yet both were strong in their desires to make it. Kat longed to be loved and have a family while Mute struggled to just be understood. Mute is the Dragon Runners MC enforcer and a bouncer at the club’s bar. He met Kat the night she went to work at the bar and from that night both good and bad sparks flew. (Secretly smiling at that thought)
I highly recommend reading this fast paced, action packed storyline that is also very heartwarming. It’s one MC ride you do not want to miss out on. 2 Thumbs Up for a great read and this reader is looking forward to Stud, Book 2 in the Dragon Runners MC Series.
Wow, I have to say this book left me a little speechless. I have to be honest and say I almost stopped reading it at one point because I hate books where the Hero messes with someone else during the point where he is falling in love with the heroine and that part almost stopped me in my tracks. Needless to say I pushed on because I really wanted to see where these characters went and I’m glad I did because it was a good story. Kept you on a rollercoaster.
Mute is a book that I have been wanting to read for a while. I finally dove in and was completely absorbed in Kat and Mute. Kat has had it so rough, no one in her corner. She works hard to get somewhere in her life and tries to stay invisible, its safer that way. When she needs a job that will accommodate her classes, the Dragon Runners MC steps in to help. Well, the Prez’s old lady, Betsy does. Taking the job at the MC’s bar puts her in the path of Mute, the club’s enforcer. Mute is just that, big and quiet. He grunts and knocks on the bar to get his coffee and doesn’t seem to like Kat much. Mute doesn’t want to like Kat so he is determined to ignore her. When that doesn’t work, he tries to make the point that he isn’t interested. But Kat is made of sterner stuff and she isn’t going to walk away from the first family she has ever had. The push and pull between them is mesmerizing. I so badly want to knock Mute upside the head more than a few times. Kat is so strong and yet hasn’t had anyone to be support her. Watching the MC rally around her was so awesome and helped me make it through till Mute came to his senses. Loved this so much and made me very glad I already bought the rest of the series! 6 stars for Mute!

I’ve never read an MC Romance like this. Mute and Kat grow into their relationship, but it’s definitely not easy.
This was a short fast-paced romance and overall I enjoyed it, but there could have been more.
I didn’t like how it went back and forth from first to third person, it became confusing at times.
Also I felt the characters sounded uneducated when they spoke, which bothered me knowing how smart they were.
Disabled hero, Motorcycle, Nurse, Bartender.
Who is Katrina Vega? Who is Alec Stillwater? What do each of them do for a living? Who is Sheila and how does Katrina know her? What new job is Katrina starting? Who is Chip? I like Betsey!!! I like Mackie as well! He is such a character, O.M.G. Watching Mut struggle in this story was so much fun. I found myself disliking Joker and Box the first time I saw them. I loved how different this story was for me from other MC stories I’ve read. Enjoy the story!
RECEIVED THIS BOOK AS A GIFT FOR A FAIR/HONEST REVIEW and REVIEWER FOR Bloggin’ With M. Brennan.
I must admit that I haven’t read mc romance before „Mute”. First of all there is not much that kind of books where I come from and when I’ve read about books that are available in Poland I wasn’t sure if I am up to such stories. It changed when I was able to read “Mute” by M. L. Nystrom. And I think now that this was really good idea to start this genre with this book cause in “Mute” you can find all things that we love such as romance, steamy sex, suspense, and of course some really emotional moments. We have here the action, the riding, the family feel and much, much more.
Main characters from this story are Mute that is basically called that cause due to a fight and wounds he suffered in said fight and Kat that has also been hurt and her experiences in the past make her want to be invisible to everything and everyone. Mute is moody, ill-tempered but in the same time he can be really protective about the people he loves and he is closed to. Kat with her urge to stay invisible is in the same time very ambitious and knows what she wants from her life to bring. They may seem the most unlikely match but they have that constant chemistry, there are definitely some sparks and some really hot and steamy sex scenes.
What I really like about this book is lack of things that we can find basically in most of the schematic stories such as thirty old virgin who is waiting for that one true prince on the white horse, no drama cause you need drama in the book, no excessive sex just to fill pages or women who are more like door mats. What we get in reward is many surprises and turns of events, action, yes hot, steamy action too, real sense of family in the club, lot of laughs and real love story with the biker style. And yes there will be moments when you may have really strong urge to yell at your e-reader “hit him again stronger Mute!!!!” and cheer for Mute when he fights for his family new and old and for what he truly believes.
One more thing about this book is many amazing characters with many great personalities and I would love to get to know every each of them. And that brotherhood that appears in other MC books but here is just really incredible with their loyalty and closeness to each other to other brothers and their old ladies. Than thinks make you feel little bit closer to the characters almost like you as a reader were part of this story and their lives.
Last thing I want to mention here is that this book is written from the point of view of both main characters which allows us to get to know both sides of the story which is one of the fast paced ones. This is the first book I’ve read from this author and I am definitely looking for more especially I am looking for Stud’s book that will be published next and his character has really big potential for some amazing story. So mark your tbr list cause we are for one hell of the ride.
Loved this book from first page to last , not just your normal MC book this one is all about family being the heart of the club . The Dragon’s in the past have been one percenters but under Brick’s leadership they have gotten legit & things are looking good for the club until little things happening turn into big ones . Mute is the club enforcer carrying his scars from his past while Kat has always tried to stay under the radar & not be noticed , she lives hand to mouth until Betsey takes her under her wing & gives her something shes never had before , a feeling of belonging .This story tugs at your heartstrings & makes it very hard to put down once you start it , it’s written as part of a series but can be read as stand alone , after Mute & Kat’s story looking forward to the next book.
Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian, I was gifted my copy of this book.
Katrina lands a job in the local biker bar while she finishes up her final semester at nursing school. Club enforcer Mute props himself up at the end of the bar for most of the night and watches. Kat’s life is threatened, along with that of the club. Mute digs deep to overcome his fear of falling in love again, and pulls out all the stops to save both Kat and his beloved club.
Ok! SO!
I liked this, mostly. I think.
Not a particularly original story line, but it is told in a slightly different way. Kat has her say for the bigger part of the book in the first person. Then Mute has a say, for a little bit, in the third person. Until Mute has his say, I wasn’t sure I was enjoying it, and maybe I wasn’t even going to finish it. But Mute having his say made the book a little more enjoyable and I did finish it.
I liked that there was a slow build between Kat and Mute. I did not like that the love word was bandied about very early on.
From what I can see, this is a first time author and in places, it does show. It’s a little . . . clunky . . . . .at points and some things don’t flow too well.
A good start, not a great one.
