A New England knitting circle teams up to find a missing mother and unravel a murder: “A beautifully written mystery full of warmth and surprises.” —Nancy Pickard, New York Times bestselling author of The Scent of Rain and Lightning As autumn washes over coastal Sea Harbor, Massachusetts, the Seaside Knitters anticipate a relaxing off-season. But when murder shatters the peace, the craftiest … shatters the peace, the craftiest bunch in town must unravel a killer’s deadly scheme . . .
After retrieving fresh lobster nets from a local Laundromat, Cass Halloran rushes to attend a last-minute gathering with her knitting circle. But Cass can’t stop worrying about the lonely boy seen hanging around the dryers, and the school uniform he left behind in a hurry. When the ladies return the lost clothing the next day, they find the child and his younger sister alone, seemingly abandoned by their mother . . .
The knitters intend to facilitate a family reunion, not investigate a crime. But the death of Dolores Cardozo, a recluse from the edge of town, throws the group for a loop. Especially when the missing mother and one of their own become tied to the victim’s hidden fortune—and her murder. It’s up to the Seaside Knitters to string together the truth about Dolores—while preventing a greedy killer from making another move!

Relax a bit in a seaside town in Massachusetts in the fall. Close friendships abound, gatherings in backyards, over dinners out, chatting over coffee or knitting and solving the world’s problems with listening and quiet thoughtful advise.
After meeting the large cast of characters and their partners, I worried I’d become confused. Well, just like Agatha Christie use to do, she has the people listed with their relationships to ithers and occupations!
A warm cozy cottage but in present day with todays problems. You have the wealthy and the struggling, the older and the younger, the people trying to turn over a new leaf and the people that drag them down. A town with non profit businesses, a Catholic relief fund, a knitting group making socks and scarves and hats to keep everyone warm.
Delores Cardozo lives in a rural area and has free meals delivered to her old home. Her home is on a precious piece of land and developers want it.
A couple across from her home declare they are her best friends and no one knows if its true…now that Delores has been found dead in her kitchen. Kayla, young, hardworking, 2 kids and a dog called Shep, was delivering the free meals to Delores. She had been at the house the night if the murder. Also new in town is a hot shot reporter Ritchie and he is determined to make a name for himself.
The knitters take Kayla and her kids under their wing even though her story about finding Delores dead has major holes in it. Meet Birdie, Izzie, Cass and the rest of their group. Some wealthy, some some not, older, younger, retired, working but all love to knit and care for each other and their town. They follow in Delores footsteps to see what she was like. Unlike other mysterues where the person diesand the book is all about who did it…this book puts the focus on the victim…as it should!!
The plot is nice and tight. Several suspects and motives and I was surprised at the killer’s identity. 4.5 stars
This series is just a wonderful good read!!
I have enjoyed this whole series and always look forward to the next one.
Sally really has a way with a story. The entire series is great.
We are visiting Sea Harbor, Massachusetts where
we meet the Seaside Knitters Society as they are
busy with the charity project, HMS (Hand knitted
Hats, Mittens and scarves). The whole community
takes part in the event which will provide warm
items for the community to withstand the cold
winter.
The Society is a special group. They are in-depth
characters with flaws, emotions, loyalties that
shape each character and their individual
perceptions of events surrounding them. The
camaraderie between the knitters makes the story.
A woman is murdered. A woman everyone saw but
knew nothing about her. She lived alone in a isolated
area. The group will discover a lot about her generous
life while throwing to solve the murder. Plenty of twists
and turns make the plot complex with many suspicious
characters as suspects.
Two children, their dog and mother are involved in the
mysterious happenings.
The beginning lists all the characters that you will meet
throughout the story.
A pattern for toe down socks included at the end.
A good start to a new series.
Love that there is reaccuring characters
Sally Goldenbaum’s Murder Wears Mittens will draw you into the warmth and camaraderie of her fictitious but embracing New England seaside town. An ensemble cast of expert knitters whose brains are exceeded only by their love of humanity, work through the complexities of an astonishing and ultimately devastating murder. Ms. Goldenbaum weaves the story much in the way that her characters create their knitted winter clothing donations, with color and style. Nell, Birdie (my favorite), Izzie, and Cass form the nucleus of a charitable assembly of women whose efforts to clothe all in need through the winter with beautiful warm gloves, scarves, and hats is temporarily interrupted by the tragic death of a woman not well known to them. Meanwhile, Cass has shared her concern with the group about a struggling woman caring for two young children. When it’s clear that this young woman stands to be a suspect in the murder, the Seaside Knitters Society, as the four are known, goes to work to unravel the mystery and reveal the true killer.
The story is told with such a sensitivity to the East Coast with its unceasing wind and the characteristic scent of ocean air that the reader has no trouble imagining he or she is truly there. Similarly, the description of the food, and especially the baked goods, creates a genuine desire to visit this fictitious town! But most of all, one develops an attachment and desire to continue with Nell and Birdie, Izzy and Cass so it’s actually difficult to leave them at the end of the story.
Sally Goldenbaum has created a touching, entertaining, and very memorable tale in Murder Wears Mittens, that will happily come back to you time and again.
Every book in this series makes me want to move to Sea Harbor, and join the Seaside Knitters. One of the coziest of cozy mystery series.
One of my favorite “cozy” series. Love the characters and the setting.
This is my absolute favorite series EVER! I have loved every book in the series. The characters feel like old friends, or people you would like to know. I
Pretty show moving. I couldn’t finish it. Not enough going on to keep my attention.
Love this series and the characters
T he character s in this book lacked the depth that the other books in the series had.
Love all these knitting books. Wonderful close friendships & close marriages & close family ties.
I have enjoyed the whole series
I have been reading a lot of cozy mysteries lately and this is another winner
Sally has a knack for great characters, some a bit quirky, and a wonderful way of tying what seem to be loose ends together. A little bit of romance, a little bit of knitting, plus murder! What can be better?
ENJOYED THE STORY AND WELL THOUGHT OUT CHARACTERS. TOOK AWHILE TO FIGURE OUT WHO THE MURDERER WAS, THERE WERE A FEW LIKELY SUSPECTS. FOUND MYSELF GOING BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN THE POSSIBLES. AS WITH MOST STORIES SOME OF IT WAS A BIT CONTRIVED, BUT OVERALL AN ENJOYABLE READ.
I love this series!
Boring book. I only purchased it because her other books were better.
