Trapped on a train with a ruthless killer… again, providing scenic tours for locals and tourists.
Reggie Swann and her friends board a special late night running of the Okanagan Express. They are treated to gorgeous valley lights, good food and wonderful company, until things go horribly wrong. A whiteout storm strands the small train on one of the highest trestle bridges in North America. Then, to make matters worse, one of the passengers is murdered.
When all the evidence points at Alan Swift, Reggie’s boyfriend, the PI has a few hours to prove his innocence before the police take over the case. A cunning and callous foe seems to be one step ahead of the detective at every turn. When Alan is hauled off the train in handcuffs Reggie appears to be beaten, unless the Black Swann has another trick up her sleeve…

What are Reggie and Alan doing? Where are they? What has Alan gotten Reggie into on the night of December 20th? I loved the Agatha Christie reference with this story. It was interesting to see all the steampunk stuff. Who gets murdered? What do we learn about the possible suspects? Who actually did it and why? Read and see!

Another enjoyable mystery in the Black Swann Investigations. The story includes an interesting murder, great characters (one who was about to make it necessary for me to take another pill for my high blood pressure! So many times I wanted to reach into my Kindle and slap that smug smirk right off her face!), natural-sounding dialogue, and a storyline that moves along well without a lot of extraneous filler. And about my comment regarding the character who gets my dander up, I think it is a compliment to Mr. Kerr’s writing ability that he can create a character with this much emotional turmoil who wants to spread it around and not have her come across as a caricature. Despite all the craziness that is going on on this trip, I learned something. I had not previously known exactly what Steampunk represented and it was very interesting to learn the ways punkers try to work in the gears and sprockets necessary for steam engines to work into their clothing and decoration. There were some very cool decorations set up at this party!
This is the third book in the series and it is just as enjoyable as the first two. But…yeah I had a major/minor problem with this one. Some reviewers had difficulty with the way Reggie gets out of prison, calling it contrived and unrealistic. Maybe so, but I could overlook that, calling it poetic license and within the realm of possibility. However, there is a situation in this book that just belies belief. I can’t give too many details without creating a spoiler, so let me just say no way, no how!!! I challenge Mr. Kerr to present this situation to any woman in his life and see if their reaction is the same as his character’s. No who, how, where, why questions. Simply, ok, let’s get back to what we were doing. Are you kidding me? A major bomb is dropped on her life and she has not the first question? Just picks up and moves on! How? Why? What? This one scene almost derailed the entire story for me. And did cost it a star in the rating. (So if you’ve read this one, would you please leave a comment and let me know if you agree or if I’m just batting at windmills.) Other than that one issue it is a great, enjoyable story.
I received a review copy from BookSirens and this is my honest opinion. I would like to thank them and the author for the opportunity to read and review it.
