The author of City of Lies returns to nineteenth-century New York City to find Christmas in the air, a police detective and a midwife with love in their hearts, and a wealthy widow accused of murder… the seemingly wealthy and charming Randolph Pollock. But there’s a problem. Una was found cradling her dead husband’s body. Rendered mute by the ordeal, she cannot explain what happened and now stands charged with murder.
Mrs. O’Neill would like Frank to investigate the case and save Una, yet with Frank and Sarah still on their honeymoon, it’s up to the other members of their newly formed household to do some detective work. But solving the mystery behind Pollock’s death means first discovering the truth about who he really is…

Hoping this was going to be a festive read, I couldn’t wait to get to Murder on St Nicholas Avenue! I was sure the story would involve the newlyweds, home from their honeymoon in Europe, and making holiday preparations. That disappointment aside, the story pretty much paralleled the previous books, with the exception of the secondary characters taking center stage this time. While I enjoyed the Deckers participation, I’m not a big fan of Maeve. However, the story was good and focused on the murder of an abusive husband. It kept me guessing.
Loved the setting,characters and story
This is a great series. In this book, the secondary characters are the stars, so it’s a fun one..I recommend the series highly.
Read all of the “Gaslight Series” by Victoria Thompson. Absolutely wonderful.
Insight to women’s lives in late 1890 and midwives.
Absolutely love this series from the characters to the setting it is all enjoyable.
I loved this entire series. The characters are multi dimensional and often find themselves in humorous situations despite the murders. The author does extensive into the time and locations in New York, so I always learn while I’m entertained.
Love these mysteries!
Reading this book provided a pleasant way to pass time. The characters were engaging enough, and the plot was interesting.

First one of the series I have read. I am now looking forward to the others. A gas light time period with all the class and job distinctions that go along with that.
I love this series and it was so much fun to see the side characters take center stage and solve their own mystery. Ms. Thompson writes such wonderful, fully fleshed characters it’s a joy to know them. And the plot is pretty good too.
I’m a big fan of Victoria Thompson’s Gaslight Mystery series. This one features the supporting characters, while the main characters are out of the country. Delightful!
Love all of her books.
I am addicted to the Gaslight mystery series. Each book is full of twists and turns. If I can’t figure out the murderer before the last chapter I am thrilled. I love this era. Lots of interesting information.
I have loved this whole series of books. The characters are people you can get attached to.
I have read all of Ms Thompson’s Gas Light Mysteries and watch for them. She publishes about one a year. They are entertaining, and full of insights into the class differences in the later decade of the 19th Century. Interesting to see how the police are seen; and, the procedures which in today’s world are seen as unethical. Sarah Brandt is a midwife from a upper crust family; however, her family has never seen her in any other light than their daughter. Her relationship with Detective Frank Malloy grows as their lives change, and their relationship stronger with each outing. Ms Thompson’s story lines are consistent from book to book, never missing a step. In this book their lives have turned a corner, and are finding footing in a life that can only prove to be more and more interesting.
This series is very informatve of the time period from the perspective of regular people.
I always enjoy The Gaslight Mysteries but this one was not quite as good as the ones featuring Frank and Sarah. Even so, it’s not to be missed.
I like the series, the characters, the time period and place.
A nice branch on the Gaslight Mystery series since it stars the minor characters from the other books in the series. It was fun getting to know these characters better.
