Mabel Aphrodite Brown unpacks her knives—and her detective skills—when she joins a cooking competition that someone would kill to win . . . Somehow, Ditie’s best friend, Lurleen, has sweet-talked Ditie into a spot on the next edition of The Great Southern Baking Contest. It’ll mean leaving her almost-adopted kids for a little while, but they love spending time with their uncle. And she can’t … uncle. And she can’t turn down the chance to bake at celebrity chef Savanah Evans’s antebellum estate in Beaufort, South Carolina . . .
Even when Savanah’s husband dies suspiciously at the welcome party, the show doesn’t stop. As technical problems plague filming and the body count rises faster than a soufflé, it becomes clear that everyone is hiding more than just biscuit recipes. It’s up to Ditie to sift through a slew of suspects and motives to cut through a mystery with more layers than her Georgia peach strudel. If she doesn’t come through with a killer soon, she might get chopped—from real life.

Who doesn’t like good Southern food? In this, the third Ditie Brown mystery, Ditie, a pediatrician and amateur sleuth, has been selected as a contestant on Savannah Evan’s Southern Comfort Cooking Contest thanks to her friend, Lurleen. When Ditie protests that she has patients to see and can’t take time off, Lurleen is not going to take no for an answer. With some vacation time available and the blessing of her boss at the clinic and the kids taken care of, she and Lureen are ready to go. It should be fun, right? Well things change when Savannah’s husband dies and Savannah is afraid she might be next. How can Ditie say no to using her sleuthing talent to find the killer? It does get complicated and there were lots of characters to keep straight but the mystery kept me glued to the page to the very end.
Ditie and Lureen are a great team and I enjoyed spending time with them. The recipes included made my mouth water. I can’t wait to try my hand at making Momma’s Banana pudding and the Gingerbread cake with warm caramel sauce on top.
Murder Most Southern earns 5/5 Recipes for Mayhem…Engaging Fun!
Antebellum mansion, a cooking competition, and murder? Yeah! Sarah Osborne’s third book in the series is well-written, descriptive with lots of great characters, and entertaining with a delightful, southern lady Mabel Aphrodite “Ditie” Brown. Pediatrician by trade, cook by talent, and soon-to-be adoptive mother by passion, Ditie’s BFF Lurleen surprised her with a very early birthday surprise invitation to apply her culinary talents in the Southern Comfort Cooking Contest hosted by her favorite celebrity chef, Savanah Evans. It isn’t all biscuits and gravy when the Savanah’s husband dies under suspicious circumstances. She knows Ditie has had success with mysteries, worries she might be next, and pleads Ditie to stay and investigate…so, the show then goes on. But, production issues, a few more victims, lies, secrets, suspects galore, a few fights, and Wow! reveal. Put your own apron on and try out these easy-to-follow recipes filled with Southern flair: Flourless Chocolate Cake, Momma’s Banana Pudding, Favorite Buttermilk Biscuits, Oven-fried Chicken, Gingerbread (Molasses Cake) and Lemon Ice Cream, and Crockpot Low Country Boil.
This was an interesting storyline about a reality cooking show. Throw in a bunch of disgruntled folks who can’t quite seem to tell the truth and you’ve got an entertaining read. I loved the characters in this story. Ditie, Mason, Lurleen and Danny. Wonderful folks. The whole cast of characters were great. It would be fun to hang out in Savannah’s house and be able to explore it. I hope I can meet up with the main characters again. I would love to know what they get into next. You’ll also find some yummy recipes included. I received this book from NetGalley, but my opinion is my own.
Murder Most Southern is the third book in the Ditie Brown Mystery series and is just as good as the first two books. Ditie is making a name for herself outside the medical community, and it is for solving murders. This time around, Ditie is asked to help investigate when the husband of her Food TV idol is murdered. The characters in this series are very likable. Ditie and her family are finally settling in and become a real unit. The author has done a good job of growing the characters. Ditie and Mason’s relationship is progressing nicely and Ditie’s relationship with her brother is growing. I really like the character of Lurleen. She provides a bit of pizzazz to the characters with her french accent and colorful stories. I like that in this book we get more of Lurleen’s backstory and it just makes her more genuine to me.
The mystery was well done. There were plenty of people who wanted to bring down the Food TV personality and so there were plenty of suspects to choose from. The author did a good job of making it difficult for this reader to guess the identity fo the killer. All of the suspects were evasive, had plenty of secrets of their own and lies to cover up. I was surprised a the outcome because of all of the secrets and lies – I become distracted trying to keep them all separate.
I really like this series and I am looking forward to reading more from this author. I voluntarily read a digital advanced review copy, provided to me by the publisher, Kensington, through Netgalley.
