When the body of a young man is found stuffed into the tomb of a medieval knight, Parish Constable Daniel Haze is tasked with investigating his first solo murder case. Suspicion instantly falls on the only stranger to arrive in the village of Birch Hill just before the crime took place, but the American captain proves to be an unexpected asset. A former soldier and a skilled surgeon, Jason … Redmond is not only willing to assist Haze with the investigation but will risk his own safety to apprehend the killer.
With no suspects, no motive, and few leads to follow, Redmond and Haze must solve the crime before one of them becomes the murderer’s next victim.
Murder in the Crypt is the exciting first installment of this Victorian murder mystery series set in a quaint British village. Perfect for fans of Anne Perry and C.S. Harris.

Cannot wait to read more from this author.
Hard to put down. Really showed the difference between American and British customs.
I like a good Victorian murder mystery. Kind of like Midsomer Murders, except 150 years earlier. An American army surgeon, who had been a prisoner in Andersonville, goes to England for the first time to settle his grandfather’s estate. The grandfather had been a lord with a grand house and income, so Captain Redmond has to adjust to a new status in life (that he doesn’t particularly like, but what the heck). He brings with him an 11 year-old orphan who had also been in Andersonville, having been dragged off to war with his father, who had died in the prison. A murdered young man is found in the church crypt the same night as Redmond’s arrival. Being a doctor, he provides his services to the local constable, Haze, and they work the murder together as a good team. First in a series, and I would read more of them.
Good mystery
I thoroughly enjoyed this book set in Victorian England after America’s Civil War. The main character is a Union Captain and surgeon who has come to England to settle the estate of his father. There he becomes involved in a murder case in the village and assists the local constable in solving the crime. This is the first in the Redmond and Haze mystery series, and I look forward to reading the subsequent books. The characters are well-defined with hints of more background to come. As an Anglophile through and through, I am always delighted to find another well-written English village mystery that leaves me wanting more.
Original
Will read all her books,
Finished book and already ordered the next one.
A captain in US military, is called to England on the death of his grandfather to become an English Lord. He arrives with a young orphan in tow to solve a murder with the local constable. You can see romance blooming but then you’ll be looking for the next book….
A great mystery set in 1865 England with an American surgeon and a former English Bobby.
I am greatly enjoying this series.
Great mystery! Loved all the cultural references to old England. This one you don’t want to put down!
1866 Captain Jason Redmond has arrived in Birch Hill to claim his inheritance of Redmond Hall. The day after his arrival a body of a young man is discovered murdered, in the crypt of the church, by Reverend Talbot. Parish Constable Daniel Haze investigates with the help of the captain.
An entertaining well-written historical mystery with two very likeable main characters. A very good start to the series.
Constable Daniel and Civil War vet Lord Jason are up to their elbows in the case of a young mans murder. An all star cast of characters make up this story which is very entriguing and dangerous. Very fast paced and historical of old England life. I enjoyed it very much and look forward to reading more mysteries by this author.
This was a fun read. The main character, an American, is a fish out of water when he inherits an estate in Britain. Add in a bizarre and mystifying murder and you have the recipe for a good summer read.
After a promising beginning, it turned out to be just awful. I tried to give it a chance, but couldn’t get through more than a few chapters.
Good historical clean mystery series.. hope she’ll write more in the series
I enjoyed the characters and the classic English village atmosphere. Nice intro to a series.
A wonderful read with characters with whom it’s fun o hang around w
A truly well crafted mystery with great characters. The protagonist is an American surgeon who fought in the Civil War and was imprisoned in the South. After the war he visits England to claim his inheritance and becomes involved in solving a murder in an English village. The characters are complex and 3 dimensional and the reader can empathize with them. There are enough plot twists to keep the reader engaged and they all seem logical. There are a number of back stories which are also interesting but never impede the plot development. I look forward to reading more books in the series.
