Every time I read one of the High Society Lady Detective mysteries, I feel like I’ve stepped into an episode of Downton Abbey, only better, because Sara Rosett’s novels are the “CLUE” version: they come with murder most foul, a plucky lady detective, and suspects galore! Granted, the decades are off by two—these books are set in the 1920s—but the gowns, English manors, and divide between those who are high society and all of those who are not is much the same. Kudos to Rosett for her well researched and executed historical mysteries, and for an intriguing character and the strong, smart, and determined Olive Belgrave.
Great attention to period details.
Good characters and a knotty mystery to unravel.
I have read other books by Sara Rosett and really enjoyed them. This is the first in this series that I have read and it is book 4. I was able to follow along but feel I would have benefited with some of the background on characters if I had read previous books. That said the story was very interesting and kept me puzzled and entertained. I will be caughting up in the future on previous book in the High Society Lady Detective series.
MURDER IN BLACK TIE…..Sara Rosette
Back to days when one wore gloves and driving coats when driving. An invite of a party was for select friends and family’s to spent several days at Parkview Hall. A luxury now for Olivia, and when this black tie affair turns deadly, and a suspect is a family member, to step up and solve. The plot was well described to the luxury and the times of 1923, and a sofisdicated killer intrusion to this high society affair. Readers will definitely enjoy and can be read alone.
Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.
Being invited to Parkview Hall is amazing. The building and it’s Conservatory are a dream come true! Olive , Gwen and Peter are people I would love to join. The only thing that can mar a visit is a murder. Who was Vincent Payne, seller of old maps and who would kill him? Peter is suspected as he was left with post WW1 issues. Olive knows he didn’t do it. She delves into the mystery and will do anything possible to find the real murderer. This is a true 1920’s historical mystery. I felt I was there. Sara Rosett has done it again. I loved it!
Get ready to be swept up in the 1920’s thanks to the vivid descriptions that quickly pull you into 1923 high society. The story unfolds at Parkview Hall in the village of Nether Woodsmoor. When a house party is interrupted with a murder, guest Olive Belgrave, who works as a discreet problem solver for high society, springs into action hoping to clear a lifelong friend from suspicion of murder.
The plot develops nicely as secrets are revealed along the way that cause the list of possible suspects to keep growing. The setting is perfect and there is an interesting cast of characters. Overall the High Society Lady Detective series is very entertaining.
Thanks to the author for an ARC. The opinions expressed are my own.
What a fascinating installment in the series with quirky characters whose interactions obscure and reveal motivations amidst a plot-driven storyline! Ms. Rosett delivers an insightful glimpse into the foibles and fears of the landed (and landless) gentry of the English countryside during the time after the war years.
It was my pleasure to receive this ARC and give my honest review.
Olive must really work hard for this case, as her cousin Peter is the suspect!
I really enjoyed getting to see the subtle possibilities between Olive and Jasper in this book! He’s always there for her!
