Murder by Candlelight earns 5/5 Deep Red Gowns…Engaging Suspense!
Rose sent a letter to her cousin Alice Beckingham imploring her not to look any closer into the matter of her brother Edward’s death. Rose explains that an enigmatic criminal, with whom she has had some strange contact in the past, was the one who influenced her brother’s crime, ordered his contract killing in prison, and fallen off a bridge into the Thames. Alice, however, doesn’t hear the word “dead,” and there are way too many questions left unanswered, so despite the warning, she still decides she will “look closer.” But for now, she’s expected to attend the theatre with her parents, an opportunity to wear her deep red dress, sitting in a private box courtesy of Mr. Williamson with an offer to meet the cast back stage. Arriving to see several friends, they discuss the handsome lead, the plot of the play, and the surprise ending the critics report…but no one thought the “surprise ending” would be murder. Blythe Baker’s writing style is very enjoyable with descriptive language and expressive dialogue creating a picturesque setting, tone, emotion, varied characters, and a sense of realism. As the reader, the use of a first-person narrative from Alice’s “I” perspective gives me a vicarious role and adds to my engagement with the drama. Clever. Entertaining. And for readers who’ve been reading the entire three-book series, more answers are uncovered for some closure. I highly recommend the series!
Loved it
Miss Alice’s adventures are always a fun read!
Light read. Ordinary in writing style and not very deep in plot.
Light clever read in a Victorian setting
An amateur sleuth (this one a young lady) witnesses a tragic event at the theater and investigates the incident.
Looking forward to reading more in this series.
Naive English woman sleuth who’s curiosity provokes the murderer to target her is rescued (yet again) by someone she has befriended. Avoids deep relationships. A modernish class novel.
Enjoyable series.
I am having a lot of fun with this series. I like the time period and the author describes it well. This book finds our heroine Alice still trying to find information on the Chess Master who had her brother killed. Alice and her family enjoy a night at the theater until the lead actor is struck down. Was it a horrible accident or murder? Alice and the police are not in agreement. And what of various thefts that are happening at the theater? Is everything connected? Can Alice figure out what’s going on before she becomes the next victim? You’re just going to have to read the book to find out!
I received an ARC. This is my honest review.
” Murder by Candlelight- (A Miss Alice Murder Mystery Book 3)” By Blythe Baker is a tale of one Alice Beckingham who must find an elusive killer after a murderous public conclusion to theatrical night’s entertainment. If only her outing with her parents to the Royal Coliseum had been as uneventful as they had originally planned but alas it was not to be….and now Alice has a playhouse murder to solve…clues to piece together …and a killer of Phineas St. Clair to capture …that is IF she …herself can avoid being the killer’s next victim. With Sherborne Sharp’s assistance …and her parent’s warnings ringing in her ears …can Alice bring this dastardly criminal to justice ?!? Read and See!!

Brava! Brava!
I am always amazed at how well this author can draw me into her stories. I always feel like I am right there in that era. Note that I am not a history buff or that knowledgeable. That is why I am overwhelming amazed at how the author does it. You must read for yourself and see if you agree.
Alice goes to the theatre with her parents. They see the lead actor on stage. As usual, she wants to be like Rose and her curiosity gets her involved in trying to figure out what happened. Alice needs to so some soul searching. Read to see what I am referring to. Be careful of the rabbit trails.
This is what I would call a spinoff series. So when you read about her cousin Rose, that is the beginning series. Alice is younger there. DON’T FREAK OUT. You can easily read this book o by itself or in order without having read the others. Guaranteed you will love It!!!!!!!! In other words, it can be read as a standalone. However , a bit better if read in order so you get the nuances.
This is my honest and freely given review. I did receive an ARC book.
A mystery read you can’t help but enjoy. When Alice visits the theatre and ends up working to solve a mystery. Was it an accident or murder. As she starts to ask questions, she quickly finds herself in danger. Great characters and a story line that’s well written.

M by..CANDLELIGHT…..Blythe Baker
Rose writes a letter to her friend Alice telling her about The Chess Master and that her brother murder was ordered by him. That solved the one.myatery, but who was this man, a man who lived in shadows. Alice had so many questions but no one to ask, therefore she felt she had to investigate. A night at the theatre, with evening gowns. Now with a death and the play still going on. She comes in contact with Sherborne does he know The Chess Master. The murder at the play, and her altercation with the killer should be. enough. Note telling her to meet Sherborne, will she go. A haunting mystery, and she seems to be on a path alone to figure them out. Good plot and good series. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion
