Welcome to the Palace movie theater! Now Showing: Philandering husbands, ghostly sidekicks, and a murder or two. When Nora Paige’s movie-star husband leaves her for his latest co-star, she flees Hollywood to take refuge in San Francisco at the Palace, a historic movie theater that shows the classic films she loves. There she finds a band of misfit film buffs who care about movies (almost) as much … much as she does. She also finds some shady financial dealings and the body of a murdered stranger. Oh, and then there’s Trixie, the lively ghost of a 1930’s usherette who appears only to Nora and has a lot to catch up on. This book is a delight! I enjoyed the mix of classic movie elements and fun characters. Looking forward to a return visit to The Palace movie theater.
I can’t wait for the next one. This is fun a fun read and the end left me wanting more.
When Nora Paige’s movie star husband is caught having an affair with a co-star, she decides it is time to start over. Fortunately, Nora’s friend Robbie needs someone to manage the Palace Theater up in San Francisco. However, Nora’s first day doesn’t go as planned. She’s barely met the staff when she finds a dead body in the backup ice maker in the basement. Naturally, she doesn’t recognize the victim, but none of the staff know who he is either. Could his murder be tied to the death of the previous manager? And, if that shock weren’t enough, Nora starts to see a hallucination that just might be the ghost of an usherette named Trixie from the 1930’s. Is Nora going crazy? Can she figure out what is going on?
Since I rarely do paranormal cozies, I almost skipped this book, but I was so drawn to the classic movies theme that I had to give it a try. I’m very glad I did because it was fun. While we find the body early on, the set up, including introducing Trixie to the mix, does slow thing down at the beginning, but there is a strong mystery for Nora to solve. Nora, Trixie, and the rest of the cast are a hoot, and I can’t wait to hang out with all of them again. And there is plenty of talk about old movies. While I haven’t seen many of the movies mentioned yet, the discussion certainly made me want to fix that. I’m already buying my ticket for the next entry in this series.
I really enjoyed Murder at the Palace. Never a dull moment, and a pleasure to read. The mystery was great, and having a resident ghost usherette (the adorable Trixie!) isn’t as weird as it sounds, lol! I’m absolutely looking forward to more books in this series. A+++
This was a really fun cozy mystery. I love mysteries and old movies. Nora has arrived in San Francisco running from a broken marriage and has offered to help a friend run her historic movie house specializing in classic films. The theater has a mystery and a resident ghost. When Nora discovers a dead body in the basement and suspects the previous’ manager’s death may not be an accident she sets out to solve the mysteries. I loved the characters, the setting and the classic movie reviews. The book was well written and very easy to read. I look for word to reading the next book in the series.
Have a new perspective on classical movies I’ve enjoyed.
I loved the film references placed throughout the book. Film buffs should love this series. I already ordered the second one in the series. Great read!
A great suspense filled story!
Great new series!
Enjoy this would read more in the series
Unique approach to a cozy mystery. Inclusion of classic movie characters and titles was a terrific addition.
Very enjoyable read. Love the cast of characters at the Palace, especially the ghost Trixie. The mystery was well plotted with plenty of red herrings. Can’t wait to read the next two installments
Great fun.
Nora Paige, betrayed by her rat-fink movie star husband, heads for San Francisco, where she manages the grand and glorious Palace, a movie theatre showing classics from Hollywood’s Golden Age. What could be more fun? Especially the ghost of the 1930s usherette!
I love old movies and I loved this book. Most of the characters are so much fun, especially the staff and Trixie, the ghost. I want to hang out at the Palace theater and help out on Friday nights. I finished the first book and had to have more so I bought and read the second book the next day and the third one the day after that. It’s been a long time since I felt the need to binge read a series, but this one is wonderful. Sally Lee’s movie reviews have set my view list for the weekend.
The only thing that didn’t feel right, was the character of Hector. He seems like more of a convenience than a character. He shows up at random times without any real purpose, scolds Nora constantly about putting herself in danger as though she was doing it on purpose, and has no problems with being pushed aside when Nora has other things to do. They are supposed to be an emerging item, but they sure don’t act like it. Nora just got rid of a man who thought only of himself. The last thing she needs is a man who says he’s okay with who she is, but turns around and tells her what to do and gets mad when she doesn’t call him in the midst of danger or excitement.
I’d probably give this book 4 stars because of Hector, but everything else is so good that it’s worth being irritated about him.! So read this book and if you think like I do about Hector, just concentrate on the really fun characters like Marty and Nora.
Loved it. Just downloaded the next two in the series.
The author told the story in a way that made me want to read along.
I absolutely love this series! I love the old time movie suggestions, the flair of the Palace and the characters are lovable.
Great fun with heroine making her place in a new town and job with the help if a lonely ghost and handful of co-workers who become friends.
Love this series I’m reading the third one now. I like her characters and the love interest and the pacing. All good. The mysteries are just interesting enough. Even when I guess (not too early) the villain, it doesn’t matter because there is so much else going on. AND the movie descriptions are great. I’m a big fan of classic movies so that’s a big positive for these. If you like classics movies, definitely read the books in this series.
