An invitation from an old friend turns out to be much more than just lunch–murder with a side order of makeup!Sexagenarian twins, Georgie and Aleta Kaye are enjoying an impromptu reunion with classmates from high school at a bruncheon in a historic mansion. At least Georgie is enjoying herself, their hostess is Aleta’s arch rival from the cheerleading squad and the debating team and Aleta would … team and Aleta would rather be somewhere else.
A free makeover using products featuring unusual all-natural ingredients is all it takes for Georgie to be ready to leave.
When another member of Aleta’s debating team is found dead in a washroom, Georgie is on the case, eager to figure out if high school jealousies could drive someone to murder.
Laugh along with Georgie and Aleta as they work hard to unravel the puzzle before someone gives them both a permanent makeover—in death.
This is a clean cozy mystery book that is part of a series. It can be read as a standalone, but may also be enjoyed within the Pet Portraits Cozy Mystery series.

“Murder at the Makeover” earns 5/5 Makeovers…Murderously Fun!
I am so thrilled to see my “fur-brother” Casey on the cover, looking all cool with his hat and earring, and honored to have the opportunity to compose the book’s dedication. No bias here, though.
Well, they’re baaaack…My favorite sexagenarians are right smack dab in the middle of another bit of mayhem and murder. Georgia and Aleta are invited to attend a bruncheon with a few of their high school class…mates? That’s putting it nicely. Clara Lu had been a thorn in Aleta’s side, and although Georgia remarked “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery,” Aleta doesn’t want to go knowing Clara “had to best me at everything.” But Georgia plays the “older sister” card (Ok, she’s only a few minutes older) and Aleta pouts, but acquiesces. Although reconnecting with some of guests was worth it, the class reunion turns into a pitch to participate in a pyramid-style business venture, A Better You. Then, questionable “natural” ingredients in the products, a blood-curdling scream, and a dead body… The police are on their way!
Another marvelous read from Sandi Scott. I am an eager sexagenarian fan of Scott’s writing style which includes a descriptive narrative, delightful banter, rich characters, and always more than a few giggles. Of course, Georgia’s involved! Sandi captures the maturity and quirky attributes of the twins along with their close connection making them a thoroughly endearing and enjoyable pair. The murder mystery is again a clever mix of twists and turns and viable suspects and motives challenging my inner Sherlock, and providing a very satisfying conclusion. The one thing I really enjoy is that together the two sisters make one formidable force. I’ve read a couple of cozy books that paint the lead character as a “super” detective with attributes and characteristics that you wouldn’t find in one person. Here you get the bold and the reserved, the flash and the solemn, the “lets go” and the “wait for a minute.” This makes for a very realistic partnership with which many can identify. Don’t shy away from this series because of the age of the characters; this series has something for everyone!
I have read all of this series and loved them all. Georgie and Aleta twins who seem to fall into a murder here and everywhere. They are so great together and so funny. I also love the interactions with Georgie and her ex husband Stan a cop. This book has Georgie softening to Stan and I found that very realistic and great. I can’t wait for the next in this series.
I just love the characters in this series. You just want to know what trouble that th3y are going to get into next, LOL.
Theses books are very entertaining I have read the whole series and can’t wait for the next one. Keep up the good work. They are just a little different which is a great thing as it keeps you guessing
,lov3 em
I received the ARC copy of this book and once again Sandi Scott has entertained me with the twin sisters Georgie & Aleta. Each time I read a new book in this series I learn something new about the relationship between the sisters (makes me warm and fuzzy inside) and w/Georgie & Stan (the ex). Personally I want to see Georgie & Stan get back together… Obie is a nice guy but…. Looking forward to more books from Sandi on “The Sisters”….
When Georgia Kaye receives an invitation to a high school class reunion (of sorts), she jumps at the chance to go see old friends and relive past memories. With sister, Aleta, in tow, the event unfortunately turns out to be little more than an attempt by Clara Lu, the event organizer, to introduce her pyramid-scheme, The Better You!, makeup business to her old friends, gain recruits, and expand her empire. Before the sisters can quietly slip away, someone screams and one of their former classmates, Samantha Alfred, is found dead on the floor of the ladies’ room. Chicago Police Detective Stan Toon, Georgie’s ex-husband, arrives on the scene to investigate and the sisters are once again embroiled in the search for a killer.
“Murder at the Makeover” is the 6th book in the sweetly, entertaining “Pet Portraits Mystery” series by Sandi Scott featuring the sixty-something twin sisters, Georgie and Aleta Kaye. In this story, readers are treated to a walk down the sisters’ memory lanes, revisit characters from previous books, and get a little closer look at Georgie’s feelings for ex-husband, Stan, and become more familiar with Aleta’s family. This series is recommended for readers that like their mysteries cozy, with lots of fun, snappy dialogue, and enjoy protagonists of a “certain age.” This series would be great on television! I can’t wait for the next one to come out.
Another great read by Sandi. I just love these books. The Kaye sisters seem to find all the great adventures and there is never a dull moment when they are around. The sisters are invited to a High School reunion of sorts that turns out to be a sales pitch. Of course, there are chocolates to taste so it was not a complete waste for them. Then there is Georgie and Stan. He loves her dearly and would do anything to get her back. The big question is will she let him back in her life? She loves being single and being able to investigate these murders and things she always seems to stumble into.
You will love this book. It is very well written and worth the read. It is a quick read too, and that is another plus in my book. Helps me to move on to the next book. Of course, I would love it to be the next one in this series as I can not wait to find out what will happen next.
I love this book and this series! Aleta and Georgie Kaye are at it again. They get an invite from one of Aleta’s friends from night school to go to a bruncheon to celebrate women. It turns into a sales pitch for her company! While not happy being deceived they do enjoy the free chocolate and champagne when there is a sudden scream. Turns out one of their former classmates is dead! So of course these two have to investigate in their funny and quirky way! I love these two characters! The book is funny and has a usual weird array of suspects! I highly recommend this book, author and series! I can’t wait until the next one! I received this book free for an honest review!
Great fun!
Twin sisters Georgie and Aleta bicker good-naturedly with each other all the time. Extravagant artist Georgie and conservative, practical Aleta. So different yet so close. When they get invited by an old high school classmate to a bruncheon for a celebration of women their age (in their mid-60s) of course they’re going. Although Aleta doesn’t particularly want to; she didn’t much like Clara. But Georgie is the oldest sister (by minutes, lol) so…
A quick read, a quick mystery. Light-hearted and great fun!
Georgie and Aleta eat sweets all the time. I gained two pounds just by reading this book 😉
I loved this book as the author has a wonderful way of telling a story. As I read the book, I just can’t stop until I finish the book. The author has created wonderfully creative and funny characters who work so well together. The sisters Georgie and Aleta are two of my most favorite characters in any book. They play off each other so well and the humor flows throughout the books of this series. From the first book to the most current book there is never a disappointment in the truth of the characters. I definitely recommend this book or any other by this author to all of my friends or to anyone who loves to read cozy mysteries.
Aleta and Georgie are back and you know what that means! A murder mystery won’t be far behind. Georgie is busy with her pet portraits but when an invitation to an event comes that she and her sister are invited to, they take it at face value. They think that it will be just a nice little reunion of old classmates and that there won’t be any harm. If only that were the case. Seems like there is something brewing beneath the surface and a little digging is all that it will take to find that the killer is closer than they think. Plus, Georgie and her ex-husband Stan are still going round and round with their marriage that didn’t quite make it. Georgie still hurts from what Stan did, but she still loves him. And boy does it make an appearance in an unexpected way! Stay tuned!
Murder at the Makeover is a real page-turner by Sandi Scott. This story is so much fun with humorous moments peppered throughout. Honestly, the author has me craving fresh hot donuts now. Fun time, right? LOL! Well, what’s a girl to do when she goes to an event only to learn that it’s a business scheme by her sister’s arch-rival? Well, you stay and get a free makeover! Sorry, but when they started naming bug ingredients even I was ready to go clear off the chocolate sampler table and say “see ya!” The mystery element to this story is fantastic. I love that I don’t quickly know who the killer is and that usually I find out when the rest do! These are my favorite types of mystery novels. They are such fun! I love the dynamics between the two sisters. Honestly makes me wish that I had a twin.
There is nothing I don’t like about this book. The story touches on Georgie’s pet portraits and how she focuses on her business. She even drums up some business while at the “makeover.” Now! For those who aren’t fond of cliffhangers…this story DOES end on one. But it just makes me excited for the next story because now this mystery is practically in their own backyard. I’m eager to see what is going on, who is behind it and why.
I am rating this book 5 out of 5 stars. This story is well done and absolutely fantastic! I couldn’t get enough. I read this story in one sitting and thoroughly enjoyed myself. I absolutely adore these two ladies and can’t wait for more! Highly recommended.
5 Stars
Make-up, Murder and Mayhem
Another episode in the Pet Portraits series finds the twins re-connecting with members of their high school class. The story is quite good. The plot is well developed and tight. This is a shorter novel, but there is a lot of story packed in. As always, the ladies pick at each other and eat the best foods. Wonderful story. I was given this ARC book for free and this is my honest review.
Loved this. I loved how you showed the way high school comes right back into feelings and how we act when we are back in that same situation. Glad to see Aleta more involved this time too. I am curious as to how Clara Lu got into the school.
Kaye twins Georgie and Aleta are invited to what they believe is an impromptu reunion with classmates from high school, but it turns out to be what Georgie calls a makeup Ponzi scheme. She doesn’t want to take part in a makeover using unusual ingredients and wants to high tail it out of there. Unfortunately, an old classmate is found dead in the ladies room and the girls find themselves on the case.
Georgia and Aleta are 60+-year-olds, full of spunk, and can’t resist tasty pastries. They often find themselves in the middle of murder investigations and often find themselves in trouble with Georgie’s ex-husband Stan. Did I mention that he is a homicide detective?
If you like humor, hijinks, cozy mysteries, and fun-loving characters then this book has what you are looking for.
The Kaye sisters step back in time to their high school years as they accept an invitation to a reunion. The setting is a presentation of some unique make-up products. As usual, with Georgie and Aleta this also involves a wide variety of wonderful tasting food . Stan Toon, of course, is also on the scene to solve the case and trying to work his way back into Georgie’s heart. I really can relax and enjoy all that takes place in this series.
I loved the interplay between the two sisters. Sandi Scott has delivered another great cozy mystery!
Loved it.
The Pet Portraits cozy mystery series by Sandi Scott is one of my favorite cozy series! The are warm, fun and a delight to read. All that and a mystery to add to the thrill of her books. I read her books in one evening.
These twins are some of my favorite sleuths – and they always make me laugh. I appreciate the fact that Georgie and Aleta are older (in their early sixties) than many main characters. Their antics continue in this latest murder mystery. It is fast paced and a real page turner. I zoomed through it and now must wait for the next fun story!
Georgie and Aleta, the Kaye sisters and twins are two of my favorite characters in Cozy Mysteries! The banter between the two of them and the way they solve murders together is so much fun! I laugh so much as I read this series. I never know what name Georgie is going to give Aleta as the interview characters that don’t know them, or what type of disease or issue Aleta will suddenly be given. Georgie is so over the top, that I love her. Any sexagenarian that lives life to the fullest the way Georgie does is a great example to others. Aleta does a great job of trying to keep up with her.
In this book, Georgie and Aleta accept a luncheon invitation from a former schoolmate who is also one of Aleta’s rivals from the debate team. When they arrive at the location for the luncheon they become reacquainted with some former classmates. What they soon find out is that they were lured to a sales pitch for beauty products, instead of a luncheon with makeovers to follow. The secret ingredients in these beauty products are not what Georgie is willing to try, while Aleta is given a makeover that is not flattering. Soon after, one of their former classmates and a beauty product representative is found shot to death. Of course Stan Toon,a Chicago Police Detective, and Georgie’s ex husband is on the case.
There are plenty of hijinks involved in solving the murder, and as usual, Stan rescues Georgie and Aleta. The murderer is revealed rather abruptly without the usual style of investigation into this person by the sisters. The way the murderer was revealed is the only reason this book is rated 4 Stars instead of 5.
What I really enjoyed about this book is that there was more discussion of the kinds of pet portraits Georgie is doing. Since this series is called A Pet Portrait Mystery Cozy, the more mention of the animals involved in these portraits, the better.
Both Georgie and Aleta’s love lives are further developed, especially Georgie’s ongoing relationship with Stan. She still has her other gentleman friend who is also very interested in her. Unfortunately, Aleta is not having as much success. Another highlight of this book is learning much more about Aleta’s daughter, Emily who is in the process of moving the successful accounting business that her parents created. We also learn an important plot element for the next book in the series.
I thoroughly enjoy this series! I read this one in one sitting as I had to find out what was going to happen next! I received an ARC in exchange for a fair review.
