This was such a fun read. Struggling to keep a bed and breakfast running is the least of the owners problems. Mysteriously, her B and B gets completely booked and then the fun starts. Strange happenings occur as the owner tries to keep up and deal with the mayhem while keeping her guests content, and her guests are mysteriously meeting tragic ends. All during a snowstorm.
Great short read.
I listened to the audio version.
Wonderful story
What a surprise to have a man do the narrating when a woman is the main character! It worked fine, but then, after a while, all the different women’s voices he had to do made some of them whiney. His normal voice was very pleasant though. I still prefer a woman’s voice when the main character is a woman.
The story itself: Klarinda is surprised to have her B&B booked full, and mostly singles. Which was rare. Very realistic that’s she’s struggling with the upkeep for the beautiful but old building. Running an inn is hard work! I was immediately pulled into the story. How it became mysterious right away… Wonderful! Then it was a lot about troubles at the inn, and an hour in it REALLY started. There was a build up towards it, making sure it never got boring! I would have loved more snooping, more amateur detective work, but it was a good story! And with a good epilogue and I always appreciate that. I loved it!
I listened to this book from Audible. It was plain FUN! Not only did we have characters you love to hate but this author adds just the right touch of humor to a dark reunion mystery.
Audiobooks are the best way to spend time in a vehicle and this one is quick enough to digest in two average traffic jams or a drive “up north.” Of course you may find yourself driving around the block a time or two to hear just one more chapter. Holly has the talent of leaving us wanting to know what happens next.
Klarinda Snow bought a cozy little B&B type inn. With it she inherited a couple of long~term employees, at least one of which has her own opinions and is not afraid to voice them. For the first time in 2 years, the rooms are mainly booked by single occupants. Unusual. They show up saying they were invited and the rooms paid for. Klarinda has no idea what they are talking about. This sounds like a British house party or real life game of Clue. It isn’t long before “accidents” begin to happen. Even the weather cooperates — with a killer. An early twist is that these people DO remember each other from boarding school.
The police who respond to these incidents at the Inn seem to be unprepared for so much activity and prefer to consider them accidents rather than suspicious. Poor Klarinda doesn’t know where to turn or who could be targeting her innocent place of business. How can she protect those still alive? People keep wandering off.
I don’t want to give away the plot. You will be glued to your seat, holding your breath and not prepared for the next shoe (or something heavier) to drop.
** spoiler alert ** This book only had like one likeable character. The main character seemed much younger than she was. Her guest were rude but she didn’t treat them much better. The idea of this story sounds great but it’s too short for the concept. A LOT happens in less than 24 hrs. Multiple deaths. Definitely not realistic at all and the cops were a joke.
I really enjoyed this book. So many things happened that I was laughing and crying. I would definitely recommend this book. This is a must read Christmas book.
Great concept, extremely poor execution. This was free and a quick read but it’s bad enough that I feel I’m owed money. The entire book is awkward, people speak in an odd manner that isn’t realistic. The character are flat, boring and snobby. The police are incredibly stupid to the point of being caricatures. Five people die, FIVE! And the Deputy says “I’m beat, and my shift is over. I’ll check back with you all in the morning.” Riiiiiight… like that is even remotely realistic. Klarinda owns the inn yet seems to have zero knowledge on how to run it even after two years of doing so. What inn doesn’t have mini shampoo and conditioner for their guests? Plus she seems desperate for a man, any man. She gives the reason she bought the inn in the first place as “Well, I thought it would be a guy-magnet.” Wtf?
Please do yourself a favor and PASS on this book. Even if it’s free don’t waste your time. I wish I hadn’t.
Fast reading and great story. You fall right into the pages and enjoy all of the characters.
At times the book/story became unbelievable. I quickly grew tired of the ‘poor me’ attitude of the manor’s owner.
This was an enjoyable light read and I would recommend it as such. It can be read in under 3 hours so it’s perfect for those who like a cozy mystery but don’t have a lot of time for reading.
Looking forward to the next in series. Just a fun book!
Fun and enjoyable story.
Good story.Nice to read something with a different.
Just okay
Cozy Mystery
Nice, cozy mystery that keeps the reader interested.
This story had no real excitement, no real suspense or tension, and the ending was definitely blah, with vital details explained after the story was over.
This review is for the audio book.
I enjoyed this short holiday themed mystery. It was a nice easy listen and despite there being lots of deaths there wasn’t any graphic details and In fact you weren’t even sure they were murders or just lots of accidents. I liked the inn setting and think if this was to become a series then the characters could become fun and interesting as you learn more about them, but it the short amount of time in this book it was more focused on the murders. I did know who the killer was and why, despite the author trying to deflect the suspicion. It was still a good listen.
Klarinda is surprised to find her little inn fully booked at Christmas, normally her slowest time of the year. and the guests are all arriving on the same night. It is only after they have arrived that they realise that they know each other and evenen more surprising is that they all won the stay in a competition run by the inn, that Klarinda had no knowledge of. What is going on? Why would anyone want them all together stuck in one place at the same time? And why would someone send Klarinda an envelope full of money paying for all of them to stay there? It is only when strange accidents start to happen to the group that Klarinda wonders if this is more than just a reunion. With the snow storm keeping the police to busy to really investigate Klarinda will have to get to the bottom of it before her little inn gets a reputation as being the unluckiest inn in the world.
I liked the narrator he spoke clearly and used a variety of voices for the characters.
Great mystery.
Book Review:
Murder at Mistletoe Manor by author, Holly Tierney-Bedord (Audiobook)
A Mystery Novella narrated by the talented Christopher Lane
Picture it~ A historic Bed & Breakfast, a sleepy little mountain town in Idaho in the middle of Winter, and a cast of quirky characters~ all set this story in motion.
Ms. Tierney-Bedord has spun a tale of mystery, murder, and one that is delightfully peculiar and intriguing. A narrative that reminded me of the old-time radio shows of long ago, especially while being entertained by the audio version of this story.
Personally engraved invitations to reserve a room at the Mistletoe Manor have been awarded to very specific people for one specific night’s stay ~ invitations the proprietor Karinda Snow, nor her assistant Myrtle, had sent. One by one they arrive, as well as a mystery man holding an envelope with cash to pay for those guests, as it’s delivered to Karinda herself.
With the Manor screaming for repairs, the arrival of these unscheduled guests, strange happenings, rooms filled to capacity, and now murders to add to an already unusual and outrageous situation, clues begin to make themselves known.
You’ll find this to be a cozy-read, one that keeps you moving forward and one that leaves you guessing…
