I absolutely loved this book! Maybe it’s because I’m old enough to know what all the references are in the book to the time period, but not old enough to have lived through it. But I felt a sense of nostalgia. The references to the coming of the Rock-and-roll era was wonderful (Elvis is a new upcoming singer!) Lee Strauss set you in her personal time machine and took you back to California in its golden era. The use of information from both world wars was carefully woven into the mystery and made you feel like you were listening to your grandparents telling you a story. (or great grandparents for some younger readers!) The mystery moved along at a good pace, and you were able to get to know the characters. And the mystery of a tangled love affair from the past keeps you wondering what happened. I’ve already downloaded the next book. I recommend this book for any mystery lover with a sense of style and longing for simpler times.
So great! Lee Strauss never fails to entertain. A murderously fun jaunt back in time.
A fun book!
Hop onto a new historical mystery series that takes place in the 50s. Fun. Fun. Fun.
Pretty good! I liked the main character and her ex boyfriend. I thought the storyline was fun, but it didn’t make me feel super invested because it didn’t feel like there was ever really a climax.
This book I could not put down
The characters were colorful and really down to earth.
The plot was good.
Again I was looking for more when I finished.
Nice change of pace, with an different setting. Fun to read about a British woman coming to California and the interesting things she has to say.
This book is about a woman who goes to California to escape a scandal at home in England and finds a dead body. Her former high school boyfriend is the detective assigned to the case and she helps him solve the case because so many of the people involved are unwilling to talk to a Mexican. It takes place in the 1950’s.
I never guessed the end and I loved that it takes place in the 1950’s.
A fun light read
Lee Strauss is one of my favorite writers. She writes wonderful stories, and this one did not disappoint. Her characters are well developed and believable. I love Rosa’s character and intelligence. Will Gloria find her calling? I loved the gorgeous Detective Miguel. Diego is adorable. This book is a real page turner. I could not put it down once I got started. I recommend this book!
Great characters!! Love the clothes descriptions of the era, too. Will buy the rest of the series for sure!
Current book of this series! Enjoyable read with a nice twist. Highly recommend this book and the entire series. Interesting characters, no foul language and light romance. You might be interested in the Ginger Gold mysteries as they are about Rosa’s mother taking place in the 1920’s.
The English lady detective is becoming American. A fun book. Could read more of hers.
Scotland Yard detective, Rosa has broken her engagement and fled to California with her cousins who are somewhat shallow and self-absorbed. While attending a charity function, she gets involved with solving a murder. The investigation leads her into contact with an old flame, now a detective in the Santa Bonita PD. Good story line.
after reading 3 or so pages I thought I would quit the book. I am so glad I didn’t. It took off and moved steadily ahead. I just kept finding time to read it to the exclusion of other things that needed doing. That says a lot. Very enjoyable, always looking to see what was going to happen next.
The “energy and zest for life [of the 50s] were hard to resist.” Although not being rich and from California, the novel gave me many pleasant reminders of a time when I was growing up. Fun!
An entertaining story with British WPC Rosa Reed helping the Santa Bonita Police solve the mystery murder. An interesting plot and characters and a touch of romantic longing when Rosa reunites with Miguel in Santa Bonita.
Ginger and Basil’s daughter, all grown up. She’s a police officer, of course , but is living in America at the moment. This series is set in the 50’s. Fun era. I was given a free ARC by the author. My review is freely and honestly given
This is a continuation of the Ginger & Basil Reed series and my head felt like it had been zapped in a time machine. Ginger and Basil had a little girl named Rosa that grew up and also entered the field of police work. However she now lives in sunny California with her aunt. And then there’s Miguel, who’s engaged and what is Rosa going to do? Lee Strauss writes great books and I expect this series to get better as it proceeds. Can be a stand alone without the previous series but makes it much more juicy to read them first. I enjoy this writers attention to the details for the time period in which written.
