“MacNeal’s images and characters are true to the time, and the resonance of several of the subplots with current events deepen the impact of the tale; MacNeal is to be commended for her skillful weaving of racial and gender issues into an already complex political picture. . . . Eleanor didn’t ring true.
Maggie Hope has returned to the US. She’s come back as part of Prime Minster Churchill’s staff during his historic meeting with President Roosevelt during December 1941. They’ve hardly arrived when Maggie gets pulled into a case involving the First Lady. Mrs. Roosevelt’s personal secretary is dead from an apparent suicide, but something seems off, and there is a clue that points to the First Lady. A scandal could derail this new alliance. Can Maggie find the truth before the lies come out?
I’ve enjoyed the previous books in this series, so I was looking forward to this one. Sadly, it is extremely weak. The mystery took a back seat to watching history unfold and sub-plots that involved supporting characters. All the characters felt weak, and one devolved into someone I didn’t like. But my real problem were the lectures on everything from race to imperialism and capital punishment, which again slowed things down.
Wonderful series of Maggie Hope, spy for the Brits. Highly recommend.
Enjoyed the seamless melding of fact and fiction
Well placed in Roosevelts’ White House. Enjoyable characters.
Interesting look at American involvement getting into WWII. This part of a series, some parts are a bit over the top, but a good read.
Have read all these books, inspiring!
Great Series. Fun to read! Some historical data.
Impressed with attention to accurate historical details woven into the plot. Good addition to the series. Recommend starting with the first novel as characters develop through the series.
My favorite time in history is WWII, so this was a great read. To see Roosevelt and Churchill from the eyes of Maggie Hope was a treat.
A wonderful blend of mystery and history during World War II. The major historical characters of the time come alive.
LOVE THIS DSERIES! Read them all.
I do like this series…. learn considerable about WW II
I would characterize this as an historical cozy. The history is well researched and the characters are 3 dimensional. But it is a romantic cozy underneath. All in all an enjoyable read.
Great read
Love the characters in this series. This offering is engaging and fun. If you know the history of the historical characters, the plot is even better.
It was a slow moving book that was hard to really understand.
Great snapshot of the customs and differences in culture and treatment of minorities between England and America. Great lesson in history during this tikme period.
Interesting plot, great historical details, delightful characters
I love this author and try to read all her books.
