STAFF PICKS
All About Me! My Remarkable Life in Show Business by Mel Brooks. A funny-side-up enlistment of the show game life of an extraordinary amusing mind. From writing for Sid Caesar’s Show of Shows in the 1950s to a smash hit on Broadway, Brooks ‘ lead record is quite remarkable – a resume that includes Get Smart, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, two iterations of The Producers, and 2,000-Year-Old Man drollery albums. The tone is often self-congratulatory, but hey, he ‘s earned the correct to brag. – Hut
The Book of Form and Emptiness by Ruth Ozeki. A novel about a male child who hears voices, with a sting of critical theory, a touch of Buddhist remember, ontological musings, and a wholly set of kernel. Plus stuff about books and libraries, perfect for bibliophiles ! – Alison
inactive Life by Sarah Winman : A bewitching, high tapestried floor of people brought together by beloved, war, artwork, flood, and the ghost of E.M. Forster, by the writer of Tin Man. From the Tuscan hills to London and back again, and over many decades, soldier Ulysses Temper, artwork historian Evelyn Skinner, a parrot named Claude, and a vomit of unforgettable characters form a bond that can not be broken. Delicioso ! – Marion
Our Country Friends by Gary Shteyngart. This new fresh is among the first entries in what is expected to be a large literary subgenre before long : the COVID novel. Given how curious and absolute enjoyable this fresh is, I wo n’t be surprised if it turns out to be one of the finest books in the class. In March of 2020, a struggling writer with a bedraggled Hudson Valley compound invites old friends, colleagues and confidants to weather the pandemic lockdown. Old tensions and jealousies, along with newly romances and alliances, soon emerge in a delightful feat of old-school storytelling that recalls Chekov – despite the very modern circumstances. A fantastic read ! – dent
Murder Under Her Skin by Stephen Spottswood. This is the second book in one of my favorite new series – featuring Lillian Pentacost and Willowjean “ Will ” Parker, a pair of sharp detectives in 1940s New York first introduced in Fortune Favors the Dead. This time, the traveling circus that Will called home for 5 years hires the duet to investigate the mangle of the Amazing Tattooed Woman. Atmospheric and filled with dapper dialogue, this one ‘s a achiever. – Hut
The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles. Fasten your seat belts for a rollicking cross-country gamble into the affection of 1950s America with this beautifully realized fib of syndicate, friendship, and the drive for connection and sympathize. As the Watson brothers set out on a bay from Nebraska to San Francisco ( via New York – yes, New York ! ) in search of their long-departed mother, they encounter a hurl of characters you will not soon forget. You ‘ll laugh, you ‘ll cry, and most of all you ‘ll be so felicitous you read this great american novel. – Marion
Memorial by Bryan Washington ( now in paperback ). I therefore loved this tender, curious, beautiful novel of an evolving relationship set in an evolving Houston, Texas. My elevator lurch : It ‘s a little like “ Love, actually, ” the movie, or would be, if “ Love, actually ” were multiracial, gay, and determined in Houston and Osaka ( alternatively of directly, white London ). What is beloved, actually, in this day and long time ? Washington has some ideas for us. Highly recommended ! – dent
