A cat-and-mouse suspense thriller featuring a retired homicide detective who’s haunted by the few cases he left open, and by one in particular – the pre-dawn slaughter of eight people among hundreds gathered in line for the opening of a jobs fair when the economy was guttering out. Without warning, a lone driver ploughed through the crowd in a stolen Mercedes. The plot is kicked into gear when … Bill Hodges receives a letter in the mail, from a man claiming to be the perpetrator. He taunts Hodges with the notion that he will strike again.
Hodges wakes up from his depressed and vacant retirement, hell-bent on preventing that from happening.
Brady Hartsfield lives with his alcoholic mother in the house where he was born. And he’s preparing to kill again.
Only Hodges, with a couple of misfit friends, can apprehend the killer in this high-stakes race against time. Because Brady’s next mission, if it succeeds, will kill or maim hundreds, even thousands.

Great detective series from King. We want more.
Loved the whole series. A different style for him in my opinion.
A fairly run-of-the-mill detective story.
This very twisted loved it.
Eerie, tragic, scary, perfect Stephen King!
What a treat, Stephen King takes you on one hellacious read, one that will haunt you, leave you begging for more offerings from him and forever change what you’ll expect from a police mystery thriller book.
Kept my interest from the beginning to the end. Was not weird like Stephen King’s books normally are, but it had a bad guy in it. A winner with me!
First of a 3-part series (I believe). All 3 are stand-alone books. It kinda, but never quite goes where you think it will.
I enjoyed how Mr King developed his characters & story. How he leads the reader through the story makes it a book hard to put down until you complete it. I look forward to reading the following books in this series. It is so satisfying to read a book that you enjoy & to find out it is a trilogy!!!!
Just the first few chapters will already get you on the edge of your seat. I always love a detective vs psychopath story. Stephen King at his best. They should make a movie on this one.
“Mr. Mercedes” is the first book in a trilogy by Stephen King with Bill Hodges, retired detective, as the main character. This book, as well as the other two in the series, is terrific. Stephen King is a phenomenal storyteller .
I enjoyed this even though it took me awhile to get through. After a specific area I just whizzed through it. Stephen has really outdid himself this time.
This book follows a retired detective and his quest to find a killer that is taunting him. The killer in this book is your typical nice guy on the outside and sick as all get out inside. This is definitely a page turner. I did not want to put the book down for anything. All the characters are great and believable. You also have your typical tragic Stephen King moments that leave you thinking (or in my case saying out loud) WHHHYYYYYYY?!?!?! I read this one quick and immediately went on to the next. Definitely worth the read.
I really enjoyed this book
gray Mercedes by Steven King
the prelude story had a sudden start as usual with Steven kings writing style and character. Augie was this main character that had fallen on hard times.so in a bid to get a job was off to a job fair.
“Janice Cray fretted” was a line used which I believe was not used correctly it should be Janice feared.
“Oh mos def big smile” I have no idea what this means so the writer left me very confused by such line.
“They strucked the crowd and knocked them over” the writer should have made it more interesting by making this line more simpler by saying the Benz forced the crowed in the post making them knocking the other persons over at the door.
“Eyes blinking with bewilderment” I keep saying why writers use big words that have nothing to add to the story line.this word bewilderment was not a good word to use.it should just be amazement or confusion.
The first chapter with the main character name Hodges. It was very very disappointed as it dwells on a television program all the way to the next chapter. I was bored and almost fall asleep reading.I think the writer made a Hugh mistake by this.my ratings remains low.
Some of his best work in the past 20 years. This is a great trilogy.
This book, like all books of the great Mr. King, was fantastic. I listened to the audiobook read by Will Patton, and the narration was phenomenal. I loved how King showed you the inner workings of the killer’s mind. His past, his motives, the way he saw the world, and the little mistakes he made that lead to his capture. The book is full of suspense and had me on the edge of my seat, especially when the killer was right under Hodges’ nose.
This book is a great read if you’re a fan of true crime. While some parts of it are fiction, the story is super realistic. The characters are really in depth and all have a fascinating arc, and the plot is riveting and addicting. Overall, I gave it four stars.
Diverse Characters/Diabolical Storyline? Yep! It’s A King Novel! Okay so I listened to this book- amazing! Will Patton the narrator does an extraordinary job as usual. Okay with that said- and I will NOT give spoilers in this review- but I must warn against listening to the final chapters of this book while driving. Too intense! Not good to be so on the edge of your seat while driving!
Mr. Mercedes is a prime example of why Stephen King has been my favorite author since I read ‘It’ in the 9th grade. The man has a gift for not only creating characters, but making you feel what they feel by taking you inside their worlds- and this man can create worlds like nobody’s business. With Mr. Mercedes however, King goes a step further in my opinion.
I’ve read lots of King novels, but not sure that I’ve ever felt sooo entrenched in the mind of a depraved character. King’s journey into the mind of his most recent madman is definitely chilling. On the flip side there are a range of characters determined to take him down-talk about diverse! You’ve got the tough as nails retired detective, the cute, African American computer whiz and a woman who winds up surprising everyone- including the characters of the story! Great Read-Time and Money Well Spent!!!
this story is great from prologue to the authors note. even though the series is out nothing can beat the book it self. It does tend to get a bit boring at times throughout the whole thing but it is overall a bit- twisted.
