Blame it on the Egyptian sun or the desert heat, but as tensions flare between a reckless rogue and beautiful scholar en route to foil a kidnapping, so does love, in the most uninhibited and impossibly delightful ways.
A brilliant scholarly woman finds herself in need of some hired muscle in Egypt (1821). Her best option is…in the nearby prison, after getting into a brawl with some soldiers, even though he’s the son of an English lord. She ransoms him out, tells him he’s the Brawn while she’s the Brains, and they’re off on a wild adventure across Egypt to save the lady’s brother from antiquities thieves. Smart, funny, sexy, and fascinating. You cannot go wrong with Loretta Chase!

I’ve been wanting to read this book for a couple of years, but for some reason it slipped off my TBR pile and I forgot all about it. How glad I am that I stumbled across it again!
I love humor and adventure in my romances, and this had both—in large amounts. It also had an ‘impossible’ hero, a bookish heroine, and an Egyptian backdrop, all of which I loved. If you haven’t read it yet, put it at the top of your TBR pile. Seriously, it’s so much fun!

I’ve read so many romance novels in my life, they start to run together. Few stick out. This is one of the really truly memorable ones. Even a decade later, I still remember howling with laughter. She decides he’s of limited wit and, he just yucks it up hard core. I’m a sucker for any historical that takes place “abroad.” So this one, set in 1800s Egypt, was catnip for me and it did not disappoint. Ms. Chase has a talent for folding in situational humor in ways that are fresh and appealing.

Rupert Carsington is one of the most charming, impossible, and funniest heroes ever! He is so ridiculous that I want to marry him ! Everywhere he goes, he basically charms everyone, from the servants to the mongoose …
And then we have a bookish scholar who is brave, adventurous, passionate, and also “boisterous in lovemaking.” Daphne Pembroke went through a miserable marriage during which her much-older husband treated her with condescension and jealousy of her intelligence. He left her a fortune upon his death, and now she is free to pursue her passion for Egyptian mysteries, but still under the disguise as an assistant to her loving brother.
I love this grumpy heroine/sunshine hero trope , the way he purposely provokes her, the way he is so confused about his feelings , up until the moment her brother points out that he is indeed in love . I was reading their story while scenes after scenes playing in my head as in a thrilling movie. Their dangerous adventure through pyramids, tombs, desert, the Nile… and the mission to rescue her brother have brought them close together. Through these, Daphne has changed from a self-conscious and insecure woman to a confident and bold explorer that she has always been. If you love the movie The Mummy added in some steamy scenes, this book is for you!
5 read for me!

Impossible to put down!
I loved this story. The characters are delightfully ironic and likable. The exotic setting of Egypt is a refreshing change from London balls and drawing rooms. It was just plain fun to read.

The Carsington series is a joy and I’m particularly fond of Mr. Impossible, book 2. The hero is underestimated by everyone except the heroine. And the heroine is not only the smarter of the two, the hero loves her for it. Loretta Chase is a treasure.

HEY Quirkies,
The lovely Caroline Linden reminded me this week of how much I ADORE this book. It’s a regular reread for me. I absolutely love the hero and the heroine together and the space they give each other to be their very most awesome selves.
If you loved The Mummy (the original one, not whatever the heck they did to it with Tom Cruise) then you need this book in your life.
Some say (ok, most say) Lord of Scoundrels is Chase’s best book – and don’t get me wrong. It’s awesome. But I will always stand by Mr. Impossible as not only my go-to Loretta Chase book, but one of my go-to historicals.
