Beloved Characters Seem Out of Character
I am a massive fan of Jane Austen fanfiction, so when any shows up at any of my favorite book review sites, I snap it up. This story will be told in serial format, which I’m not really a fan of. I prefer to get a book all at once; it seems more of a ploy for an author to get more money for a book. In this installment, we have the couple’s meet-cute and Darcy’s first stirrings of interest in Elizabeth. I had several problems with the book. The first scene at the Bennet’s home just did not come across as proper Jane Austen fanfiction to me. Much of the wording was far too contemporary or just strange, like Mrs. Bennet calling her daughters’ pumpkin heads. Jane was far more assertive than depicted in the original. The conversations sounded stilted and awkward in my ear, and Lizzy was not her witty self, though the author implies that she is. Mr. Darcy came across to me as a two-dimensional character, and I couldn’t quite believe but he had no desire to marry, which was stated several times. He’s a wealthy landowner and would be expected to have a legitimate heir, so of course, he would marry at some point. Several rules of Regency propriety were broken, including love letters and unchaperoned time shared between an unmarried man and woman. Issues with grammar, punctuation, and usage were rife in the book. The author did state at the start that this book would use British spelling and grammar—which is fine—but some rules of grammar are the same between the US and the UK, like when to use a comma before a conjunction. The author got it wrong both ways, sometimes adding one when it was not needed and omitting it at other times when it was required. The story certainly has a unique premise, but I do not feel like this author was able to realize it well.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
Love a good historical referencing well known characters in a new light. Entertaining and witty read. Good dialogue and situations to keep you turning to the next page. Great characters and story that keeps you hooked until the last page! Good read.

Ms. Winfield is a new to me author and I will definitely be reading more of her books. I enjoyed this book very much. This was a great variation on a well-loved classic. It is the first book in the Mr. Darcy in Love series and it is a great start to the series. The story was well-written and held my interest till the end. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

The first book in the Mr. Darcy In Love series a well written story that held my interest until the end, it does end as a carry-on to the next book. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Began with EB passionately discussing with her mother against being a companion to a certain Anne de Bourgh, while she travels to Italy. Then EB and Mrs B travelled to Kent and met FD and GD. Then about two scenes in Kent and then story ended.
Found the story interesting and development was good. I just feel it is super short (I thought it was only 50 pages but it was actually 92 pages long). This is 1 of 4 books in this series, and other books are not in KU.
I think this will be a captivating story of ODC for fans of P & P, but you have to buy the 3 other books to complete the series. Thus I rated this 4.5 stars.
