It’s definitely curtains for May’s client. He’s exited Stage Left for the last time.
May Ferth just wants to do a good job in her role as fake girlfriend. But there are strange goings on at the funeral. Shifty characters whispering secrets in shadowed corners, and a truly yummy advocate for the dead guy implying that May might have had something to do with his friend’s unscripted exit. May … friend’s unscripted exit.
May might be a thirty-three-year-old ex-community theater actress on her second career, but she comes from a family of cops. And, despite her talent for acting, she has a lot more Detective in her than Diva.
The villain thinks he can threaten her and she’ll fold like last week’s panned play. Clearly, he hasn’t read the day’s script changes. May and her little dog Shakespeare are on the case. Though, they might take a little direction from the Private Investigator who believes that May’s client was murdered, and fully intends to prove it.

Great, great read! So much fun!
Such a fun and entertaining series! Who knew there was such a thing as a funeral faker? I love this series. This book was entertaining and intriguing with lots of twists. I look forward to reading the rest of the books in this series!
I always enjoy books by this author, but I have to say that I find this series one of the most entertaining thus far. The characters have great personalities, are witty and amusing, and the author always manages to infuse characters with something a little bit special. A fun whodunnit that is quick, easy and pleasurable to read.
Let’s just take a minute and appreciate the ingenuity of the main character’s job in this series. Who would have thought that a professional mourner would make a fun character? I know I wouldn’t have thought so, but I would have been totally wrong. I love May! I May is one of those characters you would love to be friends with. She is smart, spunky, and incredible. The story that surrounds her is full of twists and turns, characters that are even more quirky than May, and a well written mystery. This is also a clean mystery so you don’t need to worry about younger teens picking it up. I highly recommend getting lost in this one.
I am woman, watch me eat pie… um… hear me roar!
May comes from a cop family, and everyone thinks her job as a mourning actor is strange. Yes, actor, not actress; you don’t say copess either, do you?
The deceased worked at Crime Clean, just as his father. His death looks suspicious and May is more and more convinced that it was murder.
It was an intriguing and suspenseful mystery. It gets quite complicated and very dangerous! I loved this book. Very well written. Full of suspense, but also of fun, light-hearted moments. A quote to get the feel of this book: “The cop genes engaged my mouth before the civilian genes could stop them.”
Mourning Commute (The Funeral Fakers Book 2) changed to: Mourning Commute (Theatrics Series Book 1). This was a funny, suspenseful story and I have heard of professional mourners but the main character also is an actor that plays the girlfriend of the deceased.
Maybell and Eddie join forces to solve the cases and wind up putting themselves in danger at the same time. They are successful in avoiding the dangers and solve the murders. This mystery was very good and I enjoyed reading it very much. I recommend it to anyone.

I’d never heard of a professional mourner that was hired to go to a funeral. But, that’s what MayBell Ferth is, an actor that portrays a mourner. Pretty interesting job that gets even more interesting when she’s almost murdered herself! Good thing she comes from a family of cops that taught her well. I had so much fun reading this story. Wonderful characters and I did not see that twist at the end when the killer and the reason for the murders was revealed. It was amazing!

Maybell is a professional mourner and is hired for the funeral of a car accident victim. Eddie is his best friend and a PI, who does not believe everything is innocent, watching those at the funeral closely. The two team up, at first not liking each other, but are on the clues and situations that unfold. They are threatened by events as they get closer to the truth. Wonderful characters with great interactions. The clues and twists that come up really add depth to the storyline. Definitely will be reading more by this author. Well done.

Our heroine is an actress, but she still needs to put food on the table, so she takes an unusual gig and ends up in hot water. Hopefully her other skills can help her get out of this jam.
This is a cozy mystery story with a fun cast and an intriguing mystery. The story is well developed and easy to read with a quirky cast (of course!) and a fun plot. The story moves along at a good pace and includes plenty of twists and turns to keep things interesting, while also providing enough humor to keep it fun. Overall, a very delightful story, nothing less than I expect from this author.
Highly recommended.

I enjoyed reading Mourning Commute. Mourning Commute is the second book in this series, but it reads well as a stand alone. I found this to be a fun read with plenty of suspense. In this series, May is a professional mourner for Exit Stage Left.

I enjoyed ready this story. It was funny and entertaining. Maybell was very smart as well as Eddie. They made a good team. The story had just enough drama in it to keep me reading to find out what happened next. Looking forward to another book to see how Maybell handles the next situation.
Thoroughly enjoyable and highly entertaining. One you’re bound to enjoy!
May is the only one in her family who is not a police officer. She has a job with a company that provides mourners for funerals. She was hired by the father of the deceased. She meets a friend of the deceased and fines herself in the middle of a very dangerous mystery. Against the advice of her family she works with Eddie who as a PI is well know to her family. May and Eddie wind up in several dangerous situations that result in attempts on May’s life. In the end the person responsible for the murder is revealed. May and Eddie have dinner with her family. Can’t wait to see what happens next.

Interesting concept….has your recently departed loved one left with no one to mourn their loss? No worries…Contact Exit Stage Left and hire a professional mourner or two! Josh died unexpectedly. He had been a man about town, with a new girl on his arm every night, but never met anyone with whom to be serious. His father, wanting to stop any rumors at the funeral, hired Maybell Ferth to stand in as his girlfriend to mourn his passing. Nice touch, except those who knew Josh well didn’t fall for it…especially not Eddie Dietz, Josh’s close friend, who is also a P.I. and could see through this masquerade. Eddie is certain that the accident that took Josh’s life was actually premeditated murder and he was looking at anyone who was out of place. Maybell comes from a family of police officers and grew up with a keen sense of awareness when things did not fit well together. She and Eddie don’t start out too well at first, but soon discover there is a lot more going on here than a badly timed collision…especially when someone tries to kill Maybell at the wake and run she and Eddie off the road following the internment. Can these two strangers join forces to solve the mystery behind Josh’s death, or will the murderer have two more victims by the end of the day?
This book by Sam Cheever is a story written by the master of storytelling! Like every genre she writes, her characters are people you would be friends with if they existed in your town. The tale has an element of reality to it, making it even easier to get lost in the details which she provides as she spins the story into a mystery with a twist that you might not see coming!

An actor who plays the part of a mourner at funerals to make the deceased look better, that’s a novel idea, but it forms the basic premise for this very funny murder mystery story. May is hired to act as the girlfriend of a dead young man, but it appears that his death may not be due to natural causes.
As May comes from a family of police officers, she can’t help herself from investigating the death, assisted by her dog!
There are lots of characters, all of them are really well written, and many are quite eccentric. A humorous murder mystery seems like a contradiction in terms, but Sam Cheever manages to carry it off with great aplomb. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

THE MOURNING COMMUTE by Sam Cheever is a stand-alone mystery that will keep you guessing exactly who-dun-it and why. The clues are laid out beautifully without giving too much away until the case was solved.
So many stories today are full of descriptive visions of murder, blood and mayhem or made up one HEA scenes after another. Then here comes Sam Cheever with another entertaing story full of laughter and fun surrounding the mystery of a murder or two.
MayBell wanted to be an actress but found she couldn’t handle all the internal politics, so she went another direction. As a professional fake mourner (filling a vacant spot at the funeral) she gets to act, gets a paycheck and helps people feel better. She just didn’t expect someone to try to kill her at a wake.
With punch lines like, “I am super mourner. Hear me cry”and even an “I groot” thrown in how could you go wrong.
I hope you enjoy this funny entertaining murder mystery as much as I did. Five stars for keeping me in stitches laughing.

I love the characters, the family relationships and dynamics. I love the way May defends her very unusual job! The mystery builds as does the chemistry! I had read other books in the series this was originally part of, so I was familiar with the premise. I think it might be a bit confusing to someone who reads this book on it’s own. I’d like to see a bit more info about Exit Stage Left and May’s job description at the beginning, for new readers and as a refresher. But even if you don’t fully know what’s going on, the book is a wonderful, fun read!

This is the first I’ve read from this author, but it’s certainly not going to be the last. That book was just so much fun. A twisty mystery filled with shiny red herrings that kept leading me astray. Vibrant characters, chock full of personality – even Shakespeare. All that is wrapped up in a funny will-they/won’t-they rom-com vibe worthy of classic Moonlighting episodes. I realize that this book is currently a stand alone, but I loved these characters so much that I hope I get the chance to read more about them in the future.
