Forced to lie to protect her sister . . . From the New York Times Bestselling Author, Penny ReidOne week. Home alone. Girl genius. Unrepentant slacker. Big lie. What’s the worst that could happen? Mona is a smart girl and figured everything out a long time ago. She had to. She didn’t have a choice. When your parents are uber-celebrities and you graduate from high school at fifteen, finish college … uber-celebrities and you graduate from high school at fifteen, finish college at eighteen, and start your PhD program at nineteen, you don’t have time for distractions outside of your foci. Even fun is scheduled. Which is why Abram, her brother’s best friend, is such an irritant.
Abram is a talented guy, a supremely gifted musician, and has absolutely nothing figured out, nor does he seem to care. He does what he feels, when he feels, and—in Mona’s opinion—he makes her feel entirely too much.

Oh. My. God!!
This. Book!!
Sigh!!
So brilliant and amazing and funny and romantic and intelligent and everything!!
“Disoriented and mesmerized, I couldn’t take my eyes from his face where the effects of his laughter still lingered, giving his features an attractiveness that was four dimensional. More than physical, it was an allure that permeated both space and time.”
Motion is the first book of the Laws of Physics trilogy. It tells the story of Mona and Abram—also known as Ahab. Mona comes from a famous family, she’s the daughter of Exotica and DJ Tang, sister of musician Leo and twin sister of Lisa, let’s call her the trouble child of the family. Mona is different from them all. She’s a genius girl. She went to college when she was a teen and at only nineteen, she’s doing the PhD. Like I said, genius. And she’s taken some distance from her family, until one day her twin sister calls for help and despite they haven’t had a “good relationship” in years, Mona agrees to help. And this is how she meets Abram, Leo’s best friend, also a musician and the complete opposite of Mona. But what do they say about opposite poles? THEY ATTRACT!! And that is what happened with Mona and Abram. BUTTTTTTT… There is a big big big problem to that attraction: Lisa’s favor!!
I absolutely love this book. I was instantly in love with the writing, with Mona and her intelligent and strict mind, with Abram and his hidden smile and the whole story behind Lisa’s favor. I wish I could have read this book faster but also I wish I could have taken more time to read it. With every day that I spent reading it, I fell more and more in love with the story and the characters, and I felt like they could be my friends, so I feel like if I could read them more, I could love them more. The great thing is that the next book of the series comes out soon—March 11th isn’t here fast enough—so I can continue with my fascination with these two amazing characters.
I highly recommend you to read this book right now!!!
This woman writes pure gold. Is there nothing that Penny can write that I won’t love??
She has this way of making slightly awkward and quirky, interesting and hot. The way she brings us a slow burn romance that you can feel heating up as you turn the page is pure brilliance.
Mona is one smart girl, shes very focused and her personality is the complete opposite of her twin Lisa. When Lisa calls her and asks her for help, she needs Mona to pretend to be her for a while. what could go wrong?
Abram is their brothers friend and he has been left in charge of looking after the house and keeping Lisa in-line. Instead of getting Lisa he unknowingly gets Mona and the attraction between these two is building.
This book does end on a cliffhanger but its fine as the next one is out soon so I am now looking forward to seeing what happens next.
Being a child of a pair of major music celebrities is tiring for Mona Davinci… so was being the identical twin of her estranged wild child sister Lisa. But when Liza calls from prison, asking for help.. then emotionally guilt tripping for help… Mona has no choice but to help.
and by Help…Lisa means for Mona to pretend and impersonate Liza for a week at their childhood home, so she can await the wrath of their parents… whilst Lisa sorts out the snaffu that got her in prison.
But the return home is complicated, by a house sitting hunk… and Mona’s growing attraction to him.
Wowzer this book was an addictive read. I was sucked into the story and held hostage by Mona and her genius brain and multiple quirky ways.
I was so torn for her emotional conflict… that someone so isolated stumbles across a slice of happiness and couldn’t act on it. That her loyalty and promise to aid her seemingly mean sister meant more than her own heart and possible happiness.
The connection and romantic tension between Mona and Abraham is electrifying and I absolutely adored their interactions that were funny, sweet and filled with chemistry
This is the first part in a trilogy and as I was speeding toward the end of the book I found myself with so many unanswered questions… and I’m sulking… because of a the mother of anticipatory cliffhangers, whist having the biggest book hangover because I want to know more…NOW!
I loved this book and I can’t wait for part 2!
I definitely recommend this book, this series, and this author.
GAH! I just adore Penny Reid’s writing. It’s so uniquely offbeat and interesting. I personally am a huge fan of a slow burn romance and didn’t have a problem with the cliffhanger considering they are all coming out close to each other but you should be aware before jumping in that Motion contains both of these.
I have been eagerly awaiting Abram’s story and if this first part is anything to judge it on I can say it’s going to full of angst, feels, and amazing characters. Mona is the best sort of character that Penny writes. She’s smart and awkward and just what I was hoping to get.
I’ll be sitting here waiting patiently for Space to come out in a few weeks!

Motion by Penny Reid
Series: Laws of Physics, #1; Hypothesis, #2.1
OMG!!!! What a cliffhanger!!!! This book was soo good! Can I give it more than 5 Stars?? I can’t believe I have to wait for the next one! I knew there was a reason I don’t like cliffhangers! UGH! Abram and Mona have such fantastic chemistry. Every time they are on the page together, the tension… the looks… I LOVED every bit of it! All of her nerdy inner monologue is awesome.
This book has made me laugh out loud numerous times. Abram is just so dreamy. I loved him when I met him in the Elements of Chemistry books and I so glad this is his story!!! I never wanted to put it down. I really hope I don’t have to wait TOO long for the next book. Let me look… I see they are being release each 1 month apart. ONE WHOLE MONTH is TOO long to wait!
If you like Penny Reid – This is a definite win.
If you like smart heroines and sweet sorta broody heros – You should read this
If you like funny, witty, tension filled romances – This one’s for you.
Just read it … SO Good!

Reading this book was so suspenseful, it had me biting my nails and had my stomach in knots, because I was waiting for some to yell, “IMPOSTER” and then send Mona packing. But then Mona and Abram fell in love and I was so happy and became complacent because then the ending came and then everything hurt and I felt like my heart was dying, and all I wanted to know was what happens next, so I begged Penny Reid to give me the next book and I promised not to tell anyone, and all she did was laugh that evil author laugh. I’m suffering a heavy dose of anxiety here, and this is only the first book in a trilogy. I’m going to assume the next two come with Xanax …
Motion by Penny Reid is the first book in the Laws of Physics and book 2.1 in the Hypothesis series. Motion is not a standalone, ends in a cliffhanger and continues in Space and concludes in Time.
Meet Mona. She’s a 19year old prodigy, devoted to her career, a physics wizz. Her siblings are nothing like her. Her older brother is a successful musician, but her twin, Lisa, seems to fail in everything. She parties hard and runs with the wrong crowd. When Lisa gets herself in major trouble she convinces Mona to be a stay in for her. That’s the point where Abram comes into the picture. Abram is her brother’s best friend, is housesitting and now Lisa sitting too. THey loathe each other and Mona/Lisa has to fake she loathes him too. Impossible? Mona is unique – favorite Quote: ” Gravity can be such a downer. “; she’s honest with an analytical mind, knows a lot about science but not much about life. I cna’t express how easily and deeply I connected with her character. I would love to have her as my sister and on my side.
There are books where I was happy I made it to the last page and there are the other books, Books I didn’t wanted to end. Motion is definitedly one of the last category.
A male character who reads and loves romance? Yes, sign me up. Motion is a typical Penny Reid book, witty, fun with twists and turns that had me glued to the pages. Motion is written in a single POV.
Motion (Laws of Physics #1) by Penny Reid is book one in her new trilogy. A contemporary romance that starts off with a twin swap. Mona is a genius who started working on her Ph.D. at age nineteen. She has her life planned out, but when her twin sister, Lisa, calls her for a favor, Mona soon finds herself on the next flight home and taking Lisa’s place. Waiting for her is her brother Leo’s best friend Abram who is house sitting for the week.
I enjoyed this new novel by Penny Reid. It contains humor, characters that you’ll fall in love with, and a cliff-hanger ending that will having you crying for the next installment to come out as soon as possible. What I really liked about Motion is Mona and Abram. Just their banter and then when Mona lets her personality shine through even while she is pretending to be Lisa.
Motion, by Penny Reid, was a really fun read that I very much enjoyed and recommend. I cannot wait for the next book.
(I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book I received for free in exchange for my open and honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.)
4.5 Stars
Whenever I read a book by Penny Reid I’m reminded why I love her books so much. I’m one that loves dual points of you in the books I read, but Penny weaves magic with her writing I hardly notice. I really loved Mona. She’s so book smart and with social situations she’s so adorably awkward. From the start of this book means she’s out of her comfort zone and just keeps getting more when she’s in Abram’s presence. I so want to be friends with her because she’s got a big heart and I love her little sayings. Like the blurb says this book does end on a cliff hanger, but surprisingly it doesn’t bother me one iota. It does leave me eagerly awaiting the next book because I have a feeling Mona is going to be in for a lot of surprises.
When Mona’s sister Lisa needs her to pretend she is her for a week brings her to meet Abram. Mona is torn about her growing feelings for Abram and her need to help Lisa. Oh my I need the next book!
Penny Reid is back in her wheelhouse once again in all her geeky glory with Motion, the first book in the Laws of Physics series. This brilliantly written ‘smart romance’ features an insanely gifted yet quirky heroine, an adorably responsible musician named Abram, and metric tons of slow-burning yet piping hot chemistry—my absolute favorite!
Mona may be a prodigy in scientific circles, but she’s introverted, socially inept, and out of her element in the real world. When her twin sister gets into legal trouble, she needs Mona to cover for her or she will be cut off from her family’s fortune. Impersonating her sister, who couldn’t be further apart from Mona on the personality spectrum, may be the toughest task she has ever undertaken.
Abram, who is Marie’s brother from Dating-ish (Knitting in the City Book 6), has been tasked with babysitting Mona (well, her sister actually). He’s had a bad experience with Mona’s twin in the past, so Abram is not looking forward to the job. What he doesn’t expect is how different she is from before, so the chemistry between them is unexpected (and so stinking cute, I might add).
There is so much going on it this book from the famous absentee parents, Doogie Howser-level genius, twin sister swapping, opposites attract, brother’s best friend, to the brilliant musician hero—BUT, you know what? It totally works! I was drawn into the story from the start and I couldn’t put it down until I got to the end. And what an ending it was, too. Total.cliffhanger. Thankfully, we don’t have too long to wait for the second book (and the next cliffhanger)!
Favorite Quotes:
Talking to her was like arguing with a flat-earther. Ignorance plus arrogance is why we can’t have nice things!
Gabby was a nebulous assemblage of unscrupulousness and exasperating nonsense, and we’d likely never be friends again, but she was undoubtedly charming when she wanted to be.
My Review:
I am awed, enamored with, and flummoxed by Penny Reid. She is the only wordsmith I know who could simultaneously create tension and levity with prunes, Moby Dick, and whale poop. She has stunningly strong word voodoo and magical storytelling skills that mesmerized and fuzzed my sense of reality and time as I somehow lost an entire afternoon to Mona and Abram, and I didn’t even swear at the abrupt cliffhanger, which is so unlike me. I just may have slipped into a mild fugue state on the final page of Motion, I don’t seem to have the words to propel myself from this limbo and fear I may remain in this slightly dazed predicament until the next installment hits my Kindle. Please hurry, Ms. Reid.
Penny Reid’s stories are probably the funniest stories I have ever read. I don’t know how many times I burst out laughing reading Motion but Mona’s awkwardness stole the entire show. She was sassy, socially awkward and so blunt. I loved her banter with Abram (aka Ahab) and loved the “will they won’t they” moments in the story.
I really enjoyed Motion as I felt like the book set up the series very well and provided us with a glimpse into Mona and Abram’s connection. The sexual tension between them was absolutely fiery and perfectly balanced this slow-burn romance. This story was also very angsty as it was filled with secrets and lies and had me on the edge of my seat. I was ready for bombs to be dropped and all the drama to unfold. And that ending?! Gah! I can’t wait for book two!!! 4 stars! ~Ratula
So I just finished this book about thirty seconds ago and my heart is in my throat. Holy smokes that was a doozy!!
Genius twin needs to pretend to be party girl sister and fool the ridiculously hot (and sweet and funny and smart) “babysitter”…what could possibly go wrong? I mean, seriously, I knew that we’d be left with a cliffy but this was a Cliffhanger with a capital C!!
Despite Mona’s eccentricities, I absolutely loved her. I found her so endearing. Abram, forget about it! He’s amazing. I’m smitten. The banter, the build, the butterflies, I was swooning.
Now that it’s over, I’m not exaggerating when I say that my chest is tight. I am so invested in this story and these people. I need answers and I need to know how things are going to play out. I’m (im)patiently waiting for the next installment. This is torture but I LOVE IT!!
4 STARS
Oh how I adore Penny Reid’s way of commingling smart, yet quirky humour and romance. The impact her words make is like a force to be reckoned with. Gotta love the brand of Smarty Pants Romance!
In Motion, we have Mona DaVinci, an awkward but incredibly smart and talented science prodigy attempting to help her identical twin sister out of a major predicament. She has to pretend to be her and fool Abram, her brother Leo’s best friend. Abram is in charge of keeping Mona’s sister, Lisa out of trouble until their celebrity parents return. There’s little chance that Abram would figure out that Mona is really not Lisa, since he’s never met Mona and interestingly has met Lisa only once before.
It gets good when Mona and Abram find themselves mutually attracted to one another. Will they act on their feelings? If you want to find out … read this book!!!
I have to make note of my new favourite word…FURNGHORNGRY…when fury, hunger and hormones collide!!
Warning, Motion ends in a major cliffhanger! I’m eagerly awaiting the second instalment, Space that apparently also ends in a cliffhanger. Despite the cliffhanger, Motion is a MUST read!!! I’d like to that the author who so generously provide me an ARC. Motion by Penny Reid will join the ranks of the BIBLIO-ELITE!!!
I absolutely love Penny Reid’s nerdy female leads! I found myself smiling and laughing at Mona, who was pretending to be her twin sister Lisa. Abram is adorable. Waiting impatiently to read book 2!
“ ? ?”
Fans of Penny Reid’s smart and incredibly witty writing style are going to go absolutely CRAZY over this book! : is just the beginning, my friends…and what an AMAZING beginning it was. Mona and Abram are unlike any characters you’ve ever met and Reid breathes life into them like no other. She had me hanging on her every word with every turn of the page and, as you’ve probably already heard, she left us with a pretty hefty cliffhanger. But coming from a reader who isn’t a fan of the cliffhanger, I thought it happened in a natural place. Yes, I can’t wait to get my hands on book two, but if it had to end, it ended in a good and expected place. From rockstars to rocket scientists, I couldn’t have asked for a more unique, comedic, and intellectual romance!

I voluntarily read an early copy of this title.
I had no idea what to expect going into this series, as I have yet to read the Elements series, and this is a spin-off from that, I believe. Please note, this can be read without reading Elements, as this made complete sense to me, so reading Elements before this series is not a requirement.
I can’t say that I really connected with any of the characters in this, and I absolutely hated some of them at the start (secondary characters). They did however, grow on me by the end of the book.
The premise of the story is a good one, even if slightly predictable at times. Twin swap to cover for the twin that is in trouble, should be easy right? Not necessarily, when these twins don’t spend too much time together and have polar opposite personalities.
Mona covering for Lisa feels like its going to end all kinds of badly, and some things do happen in this book that are, yes, predictable, but also other things, were totally unexpected. I knew this was going to have a cliffhanger ending going in, but it wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. I feel that it’s left open nicely for the second book to continue.
I want to learn more about these characters, even if I don’t really connect with them, and there are definitely some past things between the twins that I want to discover the answers to.
Book 2 will be interesting…
Rating: 4.5+ “OMG I NEED THE NEXT ONE” Stars
OMG!!! WHY??! Why did this story have to be a trilogy??? Why did Ms. Reid feel the need to torture us with this fabulous couple then leave us hanging just as things started to get really good?? Why couldn’t I just wait for all the books to be out??? Whatever way you want to do it, you don’t want to miss out on.
As always, I’m dazzled by the uniqueness and weirdness of the characters portrayed. Which is why I especially love Penny Reid’s romances. Mona is weird. A girl genius with a peculiar upbringing, she sees the world through a lens of pure science. The way she was brought up, she is the only way she could be: governed only by reason and unencumbered with feelings… or so it seems.
“I was a solution, he was a solute, and total saturation was on my mind.”
When her twin sister begs her to help her out, she reluctantly agrees to impersonate her for a week. Pretending to be Lisa shouldn’t be too hard, that is until Abram comes into the picture.
“Apparently, at some point over the last several days, I’d become magnetized to Abram.”
Off to a rough start, Abram and Mona-pretending-to-be-her-sister soon begin to interact and realize they’re quite compatible. Their chemistry is amazing, but there are many obstacles between them, especially the fact that she is not who he thinks she is.
My one and only mild complaint is that I hoped to get at least a little bit of Abram’s PoV and so far it hasn’t happened, but once I started Motion, I couldn’t put it down. I was glued to my kindle desperately hoping for things to work out. Oh, the angst!!! This book gave me all the feels. It had me smiling, frowning, snorting when not flat out laughing and had me teary-eyed more than once. It is quite the emotional ride, and when things seem to be on the verge of happening… it all stops!!!!! Seriously… I don’t know how I’m going to be able to wait for the next installment without bursting from impatience.
“If wanting were a means by which travel between dimensions was possible, surely my want would have carried us there.”
