Forced to lie to protect her sister . . . From the New York Times Bestselling Author, Penny ReidOne week. Home alone. Girl genius. Unrepentant slacker. Big lie. What’s the worst that could happen? Mona is a smart girl and figured everything out a long time ago. She had to. She didn’t have a choice. When your parents are uber-celebrities and you graduate from high school at fifteen, finish college … uber-celebrities and you graduate from high school at fifteen, finish college at eighteen, and start your PhD program at nineteen, you don’t have time for distractions outside of your foci. Even fun is scheduled. Which is why Abram, her brother’s best friend, is such an irritant.
Abram is a talented guy, a supremely gifted musician, and has absolutely nothing figured out, nor does he seem to care. He does what he feels, when he feels, and—in Mona’s opinion—he makes her feel entirely too much.

Good story
I e read quite a few of Reid’s books and this one doesn’t disappoint. She writes intelligent character portrayals. There is angst that keeps you going back for more. I’m now reading Space the continuation of Motion

Laws of Physics: Motion is a fun contemporary romance read. The characters are lovable. Right up to the cliff-hanger ending. Yes, the dreaded cliff-hanger. The reason this book got 3 stars instead of the 5 it was heading towards. Minus one star for a cliff-hanger and minus one because I’m just plain disappointed not to get the rest of adorable, quirky Mona’s story. I won’t be buying any books from this author. The only thing that could have made this worse is if I actually paid for it. Luckily is got a complimentary copy from Bookfunnel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This book was ridiculous. What a slow read. 218 pages of which I read only half, yet it felt like a thousand. I like nerd-speak but this woman’s inner musings and back and forth thoughts just went round and round and never advanced the story. Sometimes there were entire pages between lines of dialogue and I had to go back to remind myself what the last line was. After laboring through 50% of the book with no advancement of the relationship at all, I found out it ended on a cliffhanger and that was it for me. I was out. Ain’t nobody got time for that.
This was a fun read. Mona has to pretend to be her twin sister for several days. Mona is series, studious and her sister is a total party girl. Watching her face this challenge was entertaining. This is my first Penny Reid book and I’m looking forward to more.
Why why do I do this to myself? I was so adamant I was going to wait for the publication date of no. 3 to read them, but alas.. Being in a reading slump I was so excited when this book appeared on my Kindle. I HAD to read it, it made me do it.
I totally love Mona! I must admit I have a thing for characters like her (Janie, Kaitlyn, and now Mona) and enjoy reading about them. Of course the setting is a bit of a far stretch: Mona’s twin sister Lisa calls her from prison and begs her to take her place for one week to avoid Lisa being disowned by their parents. Really? Trading places in my opinion only works for a couple of hours at the most. After that anyone would notice the difference (how would you explain not knowing anything about the whole week?).
At first I really disliked Lisa and her BFF Gabby. But soon it becomes clear not everything is as it seems and the siblings of the DaVinci family obviously need to talk things through. Their parents may be famous (still don’t really know what they do, but they have names like DJ Tang and Exotica) but it is clear Mona and also Lisa (and brother Leo) have been deprived of a normal loving family. Mona and her brother being the prodigy’s of the family, with Lisa lashing out after being carted off to boarding school.
Abram.. what to say about him. We get to see his family (Marie!) and through their stories we get to know him a little and how he thinks about lying (oops). He is obviously enchanted by ‘Lisa’. Mona doesn’t know what to do about the situation as she is caught between a rock and a hard place.
The story ends at a very logical moment, but OMG I want the next two books. NOW.
The story was really enticing and I read it in one sitting. I loved the mentions of Marie and Janie! (2019)
Motion (Laws of Physics #1) by Penny Reid is a slow burn, new adult, romantic comedy told in first person, single POV. It is book 4 in the Hypothesis Series, book 1 in the Laws of Physics serial trilogy and as such ends in a cliffhanger.
Mona DaVinci is a 19-year-old math prodigy, physicist, PhD student, and the daughter of a celebrity couple. When her twin sister, Lisa, gets into trouble and asks for help, she agrees to temporarily trade places by going to the family home in Chicago in her place.
Abram Harris, 23-year-old musician and best friend to Leo DaVinci, has been house-sitting for the DaVincis. As a favor to Leo, he agrees to keep an eye on his younger sister, Lisa, for a few weeks until her guardian arrives.
Initially, Abram isn’t thrilled about babysitting Lisa, but she’s different than he expected. He’s surprised, intrigued, attracted, and inspired by her. Mona is also attracted to Abram. He’s smart, witty, kind and not at all what she expected from the gorgeous musician. Mona and Abram have a great connection, but he thinks she’s Lisa. She hates lying to him but promised to keep her sister’s secret. Nothing can happen between them, but Mona finds it increasingly difficult to keep her distance.
Will Mona give in to her feelings for Abram? Will she keep up the ruse or tell him the truth? Will Abram figure out that “Lisa” is really Mona? Will he be able to forgive her for lying? What will happen when Mona and Lisa switch back?
I loved part one of Mona and Abram’s story. It sets the foundation for the following books and is told from Mona’s perspective so we get to know her very well. We get to know Abram entirely through Mona’s eyes, thoughts, and emotions. Their chemistry is tangible and continues to gradually build throughout the story. Sweet, funny, and full of fantastic romantic tension, I loved it! When I finished, I immediately started the next book.
If you have read Penny Reid before you already know that this book won’t disappoint ever.
These two new characters are just perfect together, they set up a new world for us to discover in great writing like Penny always does and the scenes, the inner dialogue, the banter between them, all the awkward moments and also all the slow burn with so much chemistry between them will keep you on the edge from the beginning to the freaking end even if it’s a cliffhanger.
No spoilers because you really want and have to read this book no matter what.
Another masterpiece from the reidromance.
PENNY DOES IT AGAIN!
If you’re a fan of hers, you’ll love this book. If you’re new to her, I think it’s a good place to start to get a sense of her writing style.
She wrote a FB post about how these two characters, Mona and Abram, are thinkers and the fundamental principle of this story is kindness. In a sea of alphaholes and too many hate-to-love stories, this was a breathe of fresh air.
I can’t wait to dive into book 2!
(Unpopular opinion: Martin, the hero from the first hypothesis series is awful. He’s a huge jerk and I disliked him so much. I was really worried that Abram was gonna be like Martin as well, and he’s the exact opposite. I adore Abram, he’s exactly the kind of man I want to be with.)
The Elements of Chemistry is one of my favourite reads by this author, so I was super looking forward to this new trilogy, and she didn’t disappoint!
This first instalment was a slow-burn, amusing, adorable start to Mona and Abram’s story.
“A whisper of a smile curved his lips and I experienced an odd sort of tunnel vision as he approached.”
Mona is a teenage genius who lives life pretty much in neat black and white. She’s had to adapt early in life to cope with being a prodigy. She lives a pretty straight and narrow existence and is not used to dealing with messy situations nor messy feelings. However, when she meets Abram, he has an instant impact on her. Unfortunately, she’s not who he thinks she is, and she can’t tell him because of the consequences.
“This wasn’t a crush, this was requited desire and reciprocated like.”
I just adored this story! This author always has the best heroines – always strong, always smart, with a touch of vulnerability. Mona is quirky, awkward, and funny. She’s unaware of her affect on the opposite sex. She’s fought hard to be taken seriously in her field because of her age, but she also comes across as lonely with no one to champion her. I loved how Abram’s presence challenged her, discombobulated her, and made her feel a sexual desire that she’s never felt before. Abram is a bit of a mystery. He seems fascinated and extremely taken with her. There is no denying that they are mutually attracted and he obviously doesn’t understand what’s really holding her back.
As forewarned in the blurb, the novel ends on a cliffhanger and I just can’t wait for the next instalment!
I love everything Penny Reid writes and this was no exception. Her “romances” are really fiction with well developed plots and characters. She is a very gifted writer and seems to have a limitless ability to come up with original plots. I’m reading the 2nd in this trilogy now.
This is the first book I have read by author Penny Reid, and it was one that did not disappoint. Admittedly I am not into physics and being a newbie of her books I did not know what I would expect. Her synopsis had me intrigued to try someone new. This is the story of Mona DaVinci and Abram Harris.
Mona would do anything for her family even though she not does like the idea. One week to cover for her identical twin sister (who is opposite of her in every way) until she can get her situations all sorted out. To pretend to be her in all aspects so that her identity will not be revealed. She is on locked down at her house where Abram is house sitting Mona’s family home. Where he goes she must go. Irritated by the situation she has been put in she has no choice to follow until she can switch places with her sister.
As the days goes by the connection between the two of them starts growing into something more. Mona being a smart and up and coming physicist is always dissecting things all things physics and hypothesis theories causing her head and heart to play games on her. Abram (especially learning the stigma musicians are portrays); being not her typical encounters than other men has her body feeling things that she is not used too. His sweet and kind ways have her wanting more; however, her current predicament has her holding back.
Abram is falling hard and deep for her. She gives him mixed signals and is willing to wait until she is ready. He notices something is up but cannot pinpoint what is going on. Just when they he feels that progress is progressing in his favor we are left with a cliffhanger that will have you itching for the next book stat.
This book was filled with many angsty and intense moments. The back and forth will have you wanting and hoping for more. The titles of each chapter was a preview of what is expected and giving you a physics point of views when it comes to life. For a newbie of this author’s works this was a good start to a new author and series.
Wow, Penny Reid can make me laugh! Shower helmet?! Hilarious. I’m glad I don’t have very long to wait for the next installment of this love story. Mona and Abram are perfection.
_Slowwwww burn romance, check. Abram’s words and touch : OMG !!!
_Smart romance, double check. Not a surprise with this author.
_Totally addictive, (read in one sitting!), triple check.
_Prejudices to unavoidable and powerful attraction, check. (Right now i think about Isaac Newton, weird?)
_Interesting debates (but no spoiler), double check.
_LOL moments, triple check.
Penny Reid always surprises me with her unapologetic uniqueness of her stories/ writing/ characters. She makes us laugh, and cry and think and melt… —> she’s one of my one click author, she should be one of yours too, trust me.
Mona is 19, she’s a physics PRODIGY, she plans, she triple-checks, she controls, she’s rational, she needs to know what will happen before it happens…
Her parents are quite… unusual… Her brother is a musician and her sister keeps making mistakes…
For ONE WEEK Mona has to co-habitate with Abram, one of his brother’s friend. Just the two of them.
Abram is a musician, a singer, a songwriter. He’s unpredictable, super hot, he makes things totally irrational like eating pizza cold!
They have prejudices on each other and they’re stubborn…
But they have to spend time together… and then surprise surprise… “People are so much more than what they look like.”
The way they tease each other, their easy and funny banter, their interesting discussions… Sigh!
MONA is not used to be challenged (except in her field of work) so Abram’s behaviour is unexpected and refreshing.
She’s used to be surrounded by people older than her so she’s pretty mature… but with Abram she acts her age (the donut scene !).
She’s smart, doesn’t like hypocrisy, has some funny monologues but also some insecurities and issues. But as said previously she’s STUBBORN so no she doesn’t have issues… I hurt for her, i cried for her, i totally understood her… Her whole life she had to act like a strong, brave, unflappable, grateful, serious WOMAN who doesn’t make a FUSS. But she’s a girl and more important she’s a PERSON not an object or a robot!!! Through the pages we discover how lonely she is and that she doesn’t expect anything from anyone anymore… She’s a moon surrounded by a sea of stars shining but empty.
I liked a lot her discussions with Gabby, her sister’s bff. They lead to fascinating DEBATES and help us know Mona better. Gabby is different from what i first thought, she’s a really good surprise.
I also liked the way Mona sees Abram. No judgement, no hypocrisy, but with EMPATHY and her heart and soul (what he makes her feel) and surprisingly rationality. She collects facts: what he tells her, what he makes in front of her, not what people may think about him. When she talks about him with Gabby she’s passionate… If only he could have listened… He totally turn her world upside down.
The book his from Mona’s POV so ABRAM is still a mystery…
We know he’s smart, funny, charming, hot, complex, romantic, unapologetic, patient, caring, lovely, shy sometimes, deeply sensitive, honest… or it seems so. He likes smart people and can’t stand people lying to him (???). We have some explanations thanks to Gabby but also thanks to his sister Marie and his mother Pamela. (Yes Marie from the knitting in the city series !!! Awesome !). His family is … i want the same, yes i said it!!!
But i still have questions about him… I’m sure we’ll learn more in book 2.
(And i can’t wait to know more about Mona’s sister (by the way i love all the first names in this family).)
Several times, while reading, i said OUT LOUD and even yelled “Kiss her, kiss her, kiss the girl…”. And also “tell him the truth, tell him what you feel, stop fighting this attraction…” Crazy right? Penny Reid plays with us, with our heart, she puts our patience to the test.
The end of the book is soooo … intense! And beautiful… My heart was full of sadness and frustration, then happiness and hope (i melt!!!) and then… bang! Brutal cliffhanger… Heart attack_______
So now… I need book 2!!! Waiting will be a torture!
I think i’m gonna need a lot of chocolate cake donuts…
+++ : I loooove how the author can laugh at herself (the dumbest title for a book : Grin and Beard it 😀 )
Mona DaVinci , how can you not fall in love with a character who rock such an awesome name?
Motion is a stunning and captivating read that left me speechless- yup it ends on a cliffy.. be warned! It’s outstanding and it’s now my favourite book of PR.
Every single time, the author manages to impress me with her raw talent, her words and her science!
Motion is not just the story of a twin sister who just pretends to be her sister for a short time. It is much more than that it has all the ingredients that make this story unique, intriguing and mind-blowing. It has PR’s touch , you know with the hand knit collection 😉 and the titles of each chapters had me googling a few times and I am proud to say that thanks to PR , I now know what Two dimensional Kinematics is!!
When you are a genius like Mona, you think that you can handle everything but she soon realises that this task might be the biggest challenge she has ever faced. It becomes clear that she does not how to interact or react in front of Abram but their interaction and their dialogue is what will make you LOL and root for them!
“I must be in an alternate dimension. My brain has officially gone off the rails”
Such a beautiful and captivating story that will steal your heart. I really need to know what PR has in store for them two!
I want book 2. I need it!
Penny Reid’s latest trilogy starts out with (almost) a bang. Can’t wait for next month’s installment!
This book had me hooked. I really liked it. Mona a super smart girl. She’s a very focused person and she has her quirks. I really liked Mona. Lisa is Mona’s twin. Mona and Lisa are complete opposites besides their looks. Lisa called because she’s in a pickle and needs Mona to pretend to be here for a little bit. Mona is a great sister and agrees to do it. I really didn’t like Lisa very much. Abram is their brother’ friend. he’s is charge of house sitting and keeping Lisa in line but instead of Lisa he gets Mona pretending to be Lisa. Abram is sexy and nice. There is an attraction between the two. I’m rooting for those two but knowing it’s probably going to get messy at some point because of the whole twin switch thing. There’s a cliffhanger. I wasn’t really paying attention to the fact that this one was a book one so I was little surprised at the cliffy but now I can’t wait for book two.
I’ll be honest, I had this book sitting on my kindle for weeks, nervous doesn’t even cover what I was feeling about starting this book. Maybe I shouldn’t have read the blurb because knowing that a cliffhanger was on the horizon, I knew Penny was going to give us all the angst and teasing before the end. Anddddd she definitely didn’t hold back.
With the warning and all, it still hits you like a freight train … not that I have any idea how that feels, but we all have active imaginations. As soon as I finished, I went looking for any sort of teaser that would appease my wait until SPACE comes out and well that didn’t work because now I’m ten times nervous to read Space than I was Motion.
Mona is put in a position that she’s completely uncomfortable with and for good reason. Pretending to be her sister, who she barely talks to anymore. And she’s being babysat by her older brother’s best friend, Abram. My curiosity spiked with all the characters involved; Mona, Lisa, Gabby (Lisa’s best friend) and of course, Abram.
Abram, Abram, Abram … the ever so smooth, completely fascinating, good-looking rockstar that’s doing a solid for his best friend.
I honestly wasn’t expecting the slow burn, but I was soooo there for it. It’s been a while since I’ve read a good slow burn. Chemistry and curiosity really strikes deeply with Abram and Mona and I was just dying to see EVERYTHING unfold between them. But it looks like Penny intended to tease the crap out of us, which is understandable since we have two more parts to get through.
I’m such a fan of Penny’s books, they’re unique with a mixture of the familiar quirky humor that we’ll see in all her books. It’s absolutely addicting and I’ll always be hungry for the next one. I’m sooo invested in this series and hope March gets here sooner!
Penny Reid
Anyone who’s read my Penny Reid reviews before knows I’ll talk about her unique voice. Her standout heroines always hold a different flame compared to your typical romance leads. Mona is no different and she’s a whole new brand of quirky that I’ve fallen in love with. Girl genius who’s graduated high school and college early, Mona’s brain works so differently from her twin, Lisa’s outlandish personality. Where Mona is plain-Jane and studious Lisa is balls to the wall wild child living the lifestyle of celebrity child. (There’s also Leo who is the older brother who we haven’t met yet). Lisa has somehow landed herself in jail and desperate for Mona to play the switch card. A week in her crazy twin’s shoes shouldn’t be easy, but Lisa will do her best to help her sister out…for now.
Stuck in her sister’s life, Mona – now Lisa – is also stuck with a babysitter. Yes, you read that right. Her wild child sister is so wild that her parents wont trust her without supervision in her own home. Enter in their older brother Leo’s best friend Abram. A musician and rough around the edges man, Abram is hotter than sin and tempting as can be. But Mona struggles to keep up the charade of of being Lisa under his gaze. Because Abram is SO DAMN CHARMING. And smart. And sweet. And funny. And I don’t quite know how these two are going to get their HEA because Abram’s number one rule: NO LYING.
With every little joke between Mona and Abram i found myself loving their dynamic. Mona’s weird sense of humor and odd phrases she uses to kill quiet are my favorite part of this book. She has a warped sense of what she deserves based on an incident in her past. I just wanted to shake her and scream “TELL HIM!” More and more of her own personality shines through as she spends time with Abram and I can easily see him falling for her. But with their days numbered I’m not sure this HEA will be so easy. Be prepared for the cliff hanger folks….cause its a gut-punch. I cannot WAIT for the next book because I need more of these two NOW!
