Forced to lie to protect her sister . . . From the New York Times Bestselling Author, Penny ReidOne week. Home alone. Girl genius. Unrepentant slacker. Big lie. What’s the worst that could happen? Mona is a smart girl and figured everything out a long time ago. She had to. She didn’t have a choice. When your parents are uber-celebrities and you graduate from high school at fifteen, finish college … uber-celebrities and you graduate from high school at fifteen, finish college at eighteen, and start your PhD program at nineteen, you don’t have time for distractions outside of your foci. Even fun is scheduled. Which is why Abram, her brother’s best friend, is such an irritant.
Abram is a talented guy, a supremely gifted musician, and has absolutely nothing figured out, nor does he seem to care. He does what he feels, when he feels, and—in Mona’s opinion—he makes her feel entirely too much.

To say I’ve been eagerly anticipating this series is a massive understatement. As a huge fan of the Elements of Chemistry trilogy I’m more than ready to jump back on the rollercoaster of blistering slow burn, and tortured suspenseful cliff-hangers.
Mona is an incredibly intelligent and hardworking young woman whose next academic challenge sees her set her sights on a PhD program. Unfortunately for her an unexpected call from her twin sister dramatically veers the course of her projected trajectory.
Mona and Lisa have been estranged for years, identical in looks only they differ in all other ways. Where Mona excelled in school, Lisa outclassed in finding trouble. There’s a hint of a miscommunication that has led to the estrangement but nonetheless Mona drops everything to help her sister who is obviously in need.
Helping her sister involves impersonating her for a week, and if that wasn’t a tall enough order, Mona has to live with and convince their brother’s best friend, Abram. Abram has a reputation for being a talented musician who for reasons unknown dropped out of high school. He’s pitched as a slacker but in all honesty I didn’t really get that vibe from him in his adulthood. He’s been tasked to babysit Lisa so it’s hard to get a sense of how proactive he could be in the meantime.
He does however achieve expert level swoon with his flashes of boyish charm and inherent need to see the good in “Lisa”. There’s a lot of intrigue with Abram, I loved the deep thinking, moody waves that roll off him, and even though the situation is highly complicated one, there were many times I wished for Mona to take the plunge.
Of course she’s far too pragmatic to do that, but as the days roll on and their intensity and interactions take on new meaning she subtly finds herself weighing up the risks/benefits. I flitted between enthusiasm and nervousness as the story developed, desperate for them to take it to the next level. There’s deep foreboding of the lie being outed, I know it’s going to hurt like a sonofabitch, but I can’t wait for it to happen.
On this occasion the cliff-hanger was more of a gentle pause so I wouldn’t let that put you off if you were hesitating in picking it up because of it. That said due to enjoyment purposes alone it’s of the upmost urgency that I get my hands on the next instalment.
SWEET!!!! I’m in the mood for some smart romance!
I went into this story knowing it was going to be good. I mean, it’s Penny Reid. She’s amazing. Am I right? But I just didn’t expect to be sucked in so quickly. I had to finish it in one sitting or I was going to combust! The chemistry between Mona and Abram starts right off the bat. Add in Mona’s big secret, and I was sitting on the edge of my seat the entire book. Saying I’m looking forward to the next book, would be an understatement.
I love Penny Reid’s humor. I love her odd, brilliant heroines. I love the men who dig their quirkiness. I. Loved. This. Book. What a great start to this series! I knew virtually nothing about Motion going in, and I highly recommend that approach.
Mona is a delight. An introverted and socially awkward genius with a strong moral compass, she uses hilarious techniques for coping with uncomfortable situations. I love how her mind works. Mona is book smart, but people confuse her; therefore, her decision-making skills get clouded when she is forced to interact with others.
Abram is a puzzle that I can’t wait to solve. He is completely opposite from Mona with her driven nature and orderly sensibilities. Judging from appearances, Abram is a hot—albeit messy—slacker, even though he is supposedly a talented musician. He is thoughtful but not deep, and he seems drawn to Mona and her eccentricities.
Penny Reid continues to up her “smart romance” game with this New Adult gem. It’s engrossing and funny, with the benefit of a suspenseful mystery added in. I have a feeling this romance is of the Crock Pot simmering variety, which is just fine with me.
Motion ends on a cliffhanger—why?!?!—and I’ll be first in line to get my grabby little hands on Space.
* I received an early copy to voluntarily read. This does not affect my opinion.
So, the problem with loving Penny Reid so much but also not being one who reads excerpts or teasers ahead of time is that I NEVER read the blurb for this book either.
She warned us about the cliffhanger. Cool, I can handle a cliffhanger if I know it’s coming, plus I trust her to do it right.
We’ve all been waiting for YEARS to get Abram’s story. Yay it’s finally here, I can’t wait to see how he gets his HEA.
I DIDN’T READ THE BLURB!!
I didn’t know what I was getting myself into!!! I’m honestly not sure if I would have gone into this story with such enthusiasm had I paid more attention but I’m so HAPPY that I was oblivious. My heart is beating so fast right now because I need to know how this plays out. I have so many theories and SO MANY fears.
As expected, I’m fully in love with Abram, despite not seeing things from his POV, but my heart is also breaking for him because he doesn’t know what’s coming. Or does he?
Mona is the exact type of smart and awkward heroine that I’ve come to love from Penny. Sometimes she makes me squirm but mostly I can’t help but love her. My heart breaks for her and the situation she’s been put in and how this might all play out for her in the future.
I’m so scared.
I’m so incredibly excited, no…I’m impatient. How will I survive the wait for more? Especially knowing that there is another cliffhanger coming.
When all is said and done, it feels like not a lot happened in this book but also like SO much happened. This felt like more of just an introduction to Mona and Abram, setting the stage for what is sure to become a crazy, angsty love story.
Penny is a brilliant, evil, evil woman.
*I received an ARC for voluntary review
The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Okay, so Mona is super focused. She’s obsessed with all things physics and relativity and scientificky gobbledygook. Most of it is way over my head, but that’s not the point. The point is that this girl is a genius and never really had the chance to be ‘normal’. When her twin sister, Lisa, calls her because she got herself in a bit of a pickle, she’s a bit resistant. Pretend to be her? They haven’t done that since they were kids. Shoot, they barely know each other anymore. Mona is super studious and Lisa is a notorious party girl. How could she successfully pull this off? Well, in honor of their lost relationship, Mona’s gonna give it the old college try.
Enter Abram, who isn’t focused. He’s Mona’s brother’s best friend, a gifted musician who seems to take life as it comes. He couldn’t be more different than Mona. But opposites attract, right? And there’s no denying that despite some initial animosity on Abram’s part, these two are being pulled together like magnets. What will happen when Lisa wants her life back? What will Abram do when he learns the truth?
You can never go wrong when picking up a book by Penny Reid. Whether it’s laughs your looking for or some sweet new adult romance, she’s got the story for you. Motion is the start of something sweet, with characters you can’t help but become invested in. There’s lies and secrets and misunderstandings and the beautiful sirrings of attraction. What’s not to like? I need the next book, Space, so I can find out WHA???
4.5 stars–MOTION is the first instalment in Penny Reid’s contemporary, new adult LAWS OF PHYSICS romance series focusing on nineteen-year old, physics genius Mona Tang, and twenty-three year od musician Abram. LAWS OF PHYSICS is the second trilogy in the author’s HYPOTHESIS series but can be read as a stand alone series without any difficulty. Abram was first introduced in the Elements of Chemistry series (a subset of the Hypothesis series)
Told from first person perspective (Mona Tang) MOTION follows nineteen year old, physics genius Mona Tang, as she agrees to impersonate her identical twin sister in the aftermath of a phone call revealing nothing good was about to take place. Mona’s twin sister Lisa is desperate for our heroine to return to Chicago and pretend to be her twin but Mona’s return to Chicago to finds our heroine face to face with musician Abram, a man whom Lisa had a brief but tumultuous past. Abram has been relegated as the full-time babysitter for Mona’s sister Lisa but Mona discovers that posing as her sister brings with it all kinds of probabilities including the possibility of falling in love. What ensues is the slow building relationship and friendship between Mona and Abram, and the potential fall-out as Mona’s time as Lisa is about to come to an end.
Mona is the socially-awkward twin; introverted and reclusive, Mona prefers books to boys, research to parties; clean-living to drunken one-night stands. Posing as her exuberant and troubled sister Lisa, Mona struggles to remain in character as she slowly begins to fall for her house-mate and guard. Abram’s previous meeting with Lisa was all kinds of wrong but this ‘new’ version of Lisa brings with it the potential for something more.
The relationship between Mona and Abram is based on a series of secrets and lies. Always in trouble, Lisa ‘forces’ Mona to impersonate her twin but in doing so pushes Mona into a situation that is quickly getting out of control. There is no sex, no romance just the palpable sexual attraction between our leading couple.
The back and forth banter between characters is fast, energetic and animated. Mona’s continuous inability to remain in character comes with the bumbling diatribes of an awkward genius-a sassy but sensitive heroine whose grasp on relationships is affected by her past. The premise is fascinating and captivating; the characters are cheeky and energetic. MOTION is a wonderful introduction to Penny Reid’s new LAWS OF PHYSICS trilogy. MOTION ends on a bit of a cliff-hanger-you have been warned.
The book relies on an oldie but a goodie, identical twins switching places in order to fool someone for someone else’s benefit.
When Mona agrees to pretend to be her sister Lisa in order to prevent her parents finding out she is in jail and cutting her off it upends Mona’s world. Not only is she nothing like her sister but she has a strong sense of right and wrong and the ruse is playing havoc with her value system. Now enter the complication of her brother’s friend Abram who is supposed to be watching over “Lisa” to make sure she doesn’t get in any more trouble.
The book presents some interesting quandaries and as it ends on a major cliffhanger be sure you are ready to dive right into book two!
Mona is the smart twin, yet she got guilted and roped into impersonating her sister Lisa for a week. Having a PhD in physics didn’t prepare her for the physical and emotional feelings she would have for Abram, the musician who was keeping an eye on her to make sure she (“Lisa”) wouldn’t get into trouble. Little did he know, Lisa was in prison and Mona was the one who was affecting his heart. Unfortunately, the reader has to read the sequel Space to find out what happens to these two… I’m not a fan of books that aren’t standalone, which therefore leave the reader hanging, but I’m comforted that the sequel is already out and available. I can’t bring myself to rate it a 5 because it is a cliffhanger.
I read a preview of this book and was very intrigued but never got around to getting it. Was so excited to see it’s in KU and I inhaled the entire book tonight. I can’t wait to get answers and I’m feeling all the anxiety for Mona!
I liked it a lot, but did not realize that it’s book 1 of a 3 part series and I’m disappointed by that.
I like this book because it shows that all people have something that can make them insecure.
Life is not perfect and these characters seem real to me with real life problems. I have always thought penny Reid’s books are really good.
Thanks penny!
Cliffhanger
First I have to say, I love Penny Reid and everything she writes. That said, this is a series of 3 books you have to buy separately to read the whole story, and while there are kisses and longing and all the feelings in all three, the last book is the only steamy one. That said, again, I loved reading all three stories in quick succession ( to the detriment of my actual job, but that’s okay, right?) This was fun but I enjoyed her other series more, where each story is a standalone.
Purchased all episodes to get to ending.
Enjoyed the book, enjoyed the characters,
Three book series, with cliffhanger, (probably twice)
Didn’t want to put it down. Thanks!
All 3 of these books are so good. I really enjoy Penny Reid books. She’s funny and entertaining. Her characters are so real, they could be my friends.
Brilliantly funny yet heart achingly real emotions take you on a ride you don’t want to end. Smart but socially inept Mona has some of the funniest coping lines I have ever read! “And then the wolves came…” Just brilliant!
Utterly addictive, fascinating, hilarious, and absolutely electric chemistry!
