Forced to lie to protect her sister . . . From the New York Times Bestselling Author, Penny ReidOne week. Home alone. Girl genius. Unrepentant slacker. Big lie. What’s the worst that could happen? Mona is a smart girl and figured everything out a long time ago. She had to. She didn’t have a choice. When your parents are uber-celebrities and you graduate from high school at fifteen, finish college … uber-celebrities and you graduate from high school at fifteen, finish college at eighteen, and start your PhD program at nineteen, you don’t have time for distractions outside of your foci. Even fun is scheduled. Which is why Abram, her brother’s best friend, is such an irritant.
Abram is a talented guy, a supremely gifted musician, and has absolutely nothing figured out, nor does he seem to care. He does what he feels, when he feels, and—in Mona’s opinion—he makes her feel entirely too much.

Falling for the wrong twin never felt so good . . .
She’s his best friend’s sister
He’s a distraction (and a liability)
WARNING: Massive cliffhanger!
Motion is Penny Reid at her nerdy/hilarious/angsty best. Seriously. So. Good. Like a pure distillation of everything I love about her writing. It’s a fine, barrel-aged whiskey of Penny Reid goodness.
(Yes, okay, there’s a wee bit of a cliffie. But! You only have to wait a month for the next book! You can wait a month! That gives you plenty of time reread this one and thoroughly enjoy every word to the fullest!)
I. Am. In. Awe. This book is just everything!
I was torn between snickering at their close encounters and cringing for them when the truth is out. This is a slow burn sexy romantic read with a CLIFFHANGER ! I’m one click buying book 2 now 😀 I’ll be calling him Ahab :D- so funny !
Again, Penny hits it out the park with possibly her smartest characters ever (and rockstars and rocket scientists make a swoon worthy mix!)
Falling for the wrong twin never felt so good . . .
She’s his best friend’s sister
He’s a distraction (and a liability)
You need to read this book! Warning…there is a cliffhanger but it’s part of the fun!
I have no words, I’m actually speechless. I NEED THE NEXT BOOK RIGHT NOW!!
Once I started I couldn’t put this book down! It’s utterly addictive, witty, and enthralling. If you love a slow-burn, new adult style romance then I HIGHLY recommend Motion. It ends on a cliffhanger but the 2nd part comes out tomorrow so you won’t have to wait <3
So. The Elements of Chemistry series by Penny Reid is an all-time fave of mine – i.e., it must be read every Christmas and twice on New Year’s – and this new series beginning with Motion is MORE and NEW and EVERYTHING. Mona and Abram are the perfect mix of brilliant, adorably ridiculous and gut wrenchingly earnest. I plowed through the first 2 books in one day, and being married to an astrophysicist in NO way biases my opinion. Elements of Physics is the kind of smart new adult goodness that leaves my brain the best kind of dizzy and my heart the best kind of happy. Go get it (in this economy?) and we can argue over who loved it more. (Full disclosure: It was me. Don’t think so? I’ll get the card table. Bring your money and your first-born.)
Three reasons you can’t go wrong with this book!
She’s his best friend’s sister
He’s a distraction (and a liability)
WARNING: Massive cliffhanger!
It’s addicting, you guys. Just completely addicting.
Like crack. But, like, a healthy kind of crack. A crack that just makes you feel so so good, but doesn’t, you know, like, kill you or anything.
IT’S THE GOOD CRACK.
And now we’re just sitting here wondering what is going to happen! And we’re thinking about Abram. And we’re dying to read the next two books. AND WE’RE DEMANDING THAT YOU START THIS SERIES BECAUSE IT IS GOLD!
5 Stars!
Mona DaVinci is a 19 yr. old woman who lives on her own in Pasadena, California. She was a celebrity child born to famous parents who enjoy living in the spotlight. Mona likes her life to revolve by a schedule and order. She’s a planner who doesn’t have time for distractions. She lives for physics, equations, research, and academics. She’s a genius who graduated high school at 15, finished college at 18, and started her PhD program at 19.
Mona is preparing for an important interview when her twin sister Lisa calls and asks her for a big favor. She’s in a bit of trouble, and begs Mona to return to their parents Chicago home for a week to impersonate her. They’re not close, but her sister hasn’t asked her for anything since they were kids. Could she pretend to be Lisa? Although they were physically identical, they had nothing in common, and were complete opposites. Mona was the boring, nerdy, naive, logical weirdo math prodigy who cared about consequences and doing the right thing. Her twin Lisa was the flashy, confident, reckless, rebel rule breaker wild child.
When she arrives in Chicago she meets her brother’s best friend Abram who she learns is house sitting for the summer. He’s a gorgeous musician with an attitude. He’s incredibly attractive, but seems forever annoyed. Now she has to fool him and act normal. She could totally do this, and be back home in a week. No one would ever know. She was already in it, so she had to do her best to commit to it. She would make it her mission to try and avoid Abram and not raise suspicion.
Then he assaults her with those damn beautiful stunning smiles. No doubt he’s hot, but she usually isn’t affected by a man. She just needed to get back to her world. She was convinced their chemistry would lead to certain disaster if they acted on it. She was used to making decisions based on facts and risks, not desires, but she wanted him bad. He makes her feel too much. She’s drowning in lies, and no matter what she does she would betray someone. Could she just let herself have him and damn the consequences for once in her life?
Motion is Laws of Physics part 1, and is the second trilogy in the Hypothesis series. This book was fantastic! It reminded me why I love Penny’s writing so much! I couldn’t put it down, and at the end was still dying for more. I can’t wait for Space part 2 to get more of Abram & Mona. I’m obsessed!!!
A thoroughly adorkable story that will keep you flipping pages long after bedtime — or until the wolves come.
Once I started, I couldn’t stop. This romance has everything I absolutely love in a novel — sizzling chemistry, playful banter and a plot that kept me guessing! 6 STARS — I honestly loved this book!
I’ve read some of Penny Peid’s other romances before, and really enjoyed her characters and humor. The people in her stories feel very real to me. I grabbed Motion in my Libby library app and started reading… without seeing the disclaimer at the bottom of the scrolling that mentions that this is a cliffhanger series, meaning you don’t get resolution until book 3. When Motion was done–abruptly with a hanging plot point–I was furious, since the library hold queue was 6 weeks long for the other two books. So, if you’re okay with a cliffhanger trio of short books, dive in.
It’s NA, so there’s angst and pop culture, and sometimes the first person narrative gets a little navel gaze-y, but on the whole, it’s smart and sexy, and a fun read… or it will be when I can get the rest of the story.

4.5 “anytime-phrases” “Ahab” “messy Adonis” “left dimple” Kisses
I’ll be honest…I was scared to read this book. Scared mixed with a lot of excitement – scarecited? Sure…we’ll call that a new Penny Reid induced emotion. I knew after the Elements of Chemistry Series almost destroyed me that the Laws of Physics Series was probably going to have the same effect. I can officially state this is 10000000% accurate and I’m epically and totally screwed (in the best ways of course). Let me quickly clarify, you do not need to read the Elements of Chemistry Series ( Attraction , Heat & Capture ) in order to read the Laws of Physics Series. While you do get to meet Abram in Capture, there is no need to read it in order to enjoy Motion. In fact…there’s an Author’s Note at the very beginning and it details the timeline of where Motion lines up because there is some overlap with other Penny books…and this made me about a kajillion different types of giddy – I looove it when universes collide! Anywhoodle, back to my scarecitement – so I knew that the cliffy was going to be epic (Penny warned everyone multiple times)…I knew I was already 98% in love with Abram…and I knew the power of Penny’s writing…so I was pretty sure that Motion was possibly going to kill me – and it basically did. I even prolonged the pain as much as I could – I usually devour Penny’s books in a matter of 24-48 hours…I drug Motion out for a loooong time, not cause I wanted to but because of the scarecitement. And Mona and Abram were everything I was expecting and then some.
Mona DaVinci…oh this girl, this wonderful, brilliant, amazing girl – I loved her to bits and pieces. And it happened practically from the moment I first stepped into her lovely little brain and the love just continued to grow to epic proportions. We almost had a situation because of her thoughts on romance novels…but I let that slide because…well, she’s Mona and I get her. I truly love everything about her…but my number one thing I’m obsessed with is the way she thinks. The way she processes data…her interactions with people…how she compartmentalizes stuff…all the little nuances that make her tick in ways that are extremely fascinating to me. I loved her sense of humor…I loved how smart she was…I loved her loyalty…she just is out of this word fantastic to me. And seriously…her anytime phrases legit make me insanely happy – there is a scene with her and Abram in a restaurant and she used every single one and my face hurt from smiling by the end of it. Possibly one of my favorite scenes ever written.
‘My calm capitulation seemed to increase his irritation. “No drinking. No drugs. No parties. No sneaking out. No one comes over until your parents get home in two weeks, or Dr. Steward arrives, whichever comes first. And no leaving the house without me. Anywhere you go, I go.”
I stared at him evenly, because—other than having him escort me out of the house—he was basically reading my Christmas list. Total seclusion and quiet for the next week? Where did I sign up?’
Abram Harris…ooooooooooh my lucky stars this man…this man… this man!!!! I was inexplicably drawn to him in Capture and when I found out that he was going to be the hero in the Laws of Physics series I did the most epic happy dance because gah!!! There is just something about him! Maybe it’s the hair…maybe it’s the insanely good looks…maybe it’s the dreamy brown eyes…but in all honesty, it’s probably the left dimple. Mona has inflicted upon me all her Abram obsessions…like the fixation on the dimple (it’s amazing…trust me) – or the way he chews his food…and do. Not. Even. Get me started on his smiles *swoooooon* The man is a million different shades of perfect without even breaking a sweat and like I said in the beginning, I was already in love with him so I’m barely surviving right now. I’m hooked on Abram and I refuse to apologize! PLUS!!!!! The best part…Abram is Marie’s baby brother! Marie is from Dating-ish , part of the Knitting in the City Series (he makes a tiny appearance in her book) and there is a scene in Motion with Marie and Abram’s parents and I may or may not squealed with insane amounts of joy over that whole interaction (spoiler alert – I totally did – it’s the BEST!!!!).
‘I didn’t like all the unknowns.
My life had been supremely tidy up to now, by design. And Abram was the definition of messy—from the way he dressed to how infrequently he shaved to eating cold pizza, sleeping at random hours, approaching his responsibilities with a laissez-faire nonchalance, waiting until the last minute to get his mother a birthday gift, and did the man even have a job?—and liking him had the potential to be incredibly messy.
And yet, I did.
I liked him.’
Obsession thy name is Mona and Abram. I’m not joking, there is no other way to describe how I feel about these two other than obsession because oooooooooooooh-em gee they’re out of this world. The chemistry…the banter…the sexual tension…the everything!!!!! It’s all perfect and addictive – everything I wanted and then some. I was pulled into their orbit and never wanted to escape because – hi, it’s awesome and who wants to willingly give that up. It was truly effortless. I think there was also the mystery aspect of it too because since we’re in Mona’s POV the whole time and there are interactions that she is not privy to that play a part in what’s going on, there are some details that we still have to figure out. I loved the unknown aspect of it though because of the layers and added emotion it brought to the whole dynamic…it’s all a part of this wonderful emotional rollercoaster called the Laws of Physics and I’m just holding on for dear life with a smile on my face!
‘He grinned, his features softened by the glow of nearby streetlamps and the red light of the traffic signal, his four – dimensional attractiveness growing to ten dimensions, where the tenth were those pesky infinite possibilities and I was suffocating in the tenderness of his big, gorgeous, ten – dimensional brown eyes.
Oh my heart.’
Penny mother loving Reid…she gets me every time. I say it every time, I guess cause I like repeating myself…but it never gets old. Her creativity…her originality…her uniqueness, all of it continues to blow me away. Penny has a way of incorporating things like physics jokes and intellectual aspects in her books but somehow manages to do it without making me feel dumb. I’ve talked about this before but it’s obviously very apparent when dealing with series like The Elements of Chemistry and Laws of Physics (the series names speak for themselves) when they’re dealing with those subjects. I am so not a person that understands science/chemistry/physics/etc. type stuff – it’s a miracle that I passed them in high school, but magically I read Penny’s books and I’m all of a sudden thinking, hey – this stuff isn’t so bad! (If only Penny coulda been my teacher in high school!) I mean there is a reason Penny is one of my favorite authors and she just continues to exemplify those reasons with each and every book of hers that I read….and I love it.
‘This was also the moment. Lying here with Abram was the memory I would keep, the one I would retrieve on rainy days, the one that would inspire wistful daydreams. And as beautiful as he’d been in the pool, as utterly perfect of an exterior he possessed, I wouldn’t be thinking of his body when I missed him, I would be thinking of his heart.’
So…it’s no spoiler – the end of Motion is a dun-dun-dunnnnnn *dramatic pause* – cliffhanger! I am one of the strange readers that actually likes cliffhangers – but specifically well timed ones that are not used for the purpose of extending a story unnecessarily (like drama for the sake of drama kind of stuff)…and that is soooooooooo not the case with the Laws of Physics. Not even by a long shot. We’ve barely scratched the surface and I figured it was probably going to end the way it did but it didn’t lessen the emotional blow at all. I’m of course dyyyyyyyyying to read Space, which I intend on doing immediately! I cannot wait to see what is going to happen next with Mona and Abram. #AddictedToPhysics
I loved this book!!! I can’t wait to finish this series.
Mona is the good twin the “Mary Sue” she is exceptionally smart she also the daughter a famous couple.
When she gets a unusual phone call from her twin that she needs to help her out she decides that she will do it. One week and a sexy man will she be able to hold her guns?
Abram is very laid back he hasn’t figured much out except that he loves to write music and sing. Taking an easy job for a few months turns into more than he bargained for.
I loved this story and I can’t wait to see what happens in the next two books!!
Motion by Penny Reid is the first book in her three-part Laws of Physics series. A story of identical twin sisters that couldn’t be more opposite in their personalities, of an aspiring musician and his reluctant smiles, and of the difference between perception and reality.
Mona is back home in Chicago pretending to be her twin instead of interviewing for her PhD and she has almost no idea how she got here. There was a phone call, a flight, a makeover to transform into her sister and now she is back at her childhood home slightly shell-shocked and not sure what to do. Especially when the the more than gorgeous Abram angrily greets her at the door…
Ending on a cliffhanger this book is not for anyone looking for a steamy romance with immediate gratification. This is a slow burn filled with obstacles, inner-monologues, internal battles waging for what is right and what is fair and learning they aren’t always the same. This is a deeply involved story that slowly builds the characters, the background story, and the emotions of the characters as it goes. It pulls you in deeper and deeper with each sentence. I have loved every Penny Reid book I have read so far and, big surprise, this is no different. If you don’t enjoy cliffhangers then you may want to wait until all three books are released but you still, absolutely, should read this. Enjoy!
It’s not a surprise that MOTION ends on a cliffhanger; we’ve known from the start this is a story told in three parts, and I find the author manages to pinpoint exactly the right time to pause the story and leave us wanting more, so curse you for that, Penny Reid!
MOTION is very much Mona’s book. She is an exceedingly introspective character, so we spend plenty of time in her head learning about her past, her present and her attitudes. There is still plenty to learn about her, and I hope we do in the latter books.
Abram played more of a supporting role this time around. I enjoyed the snippets of him we got but so far, he is very different from the Abram we first met in Reid’s Chemistry series.
There are funny lines and witticisms peppered throughout the book but the attraction between Mona an Abram really is in its infancy and quite benign. Mona’s crush on Abram’s sister Marie – a woman she has yet to meet but desperately wants to be friends with – has her showing more excitement than she did for Abram.
I do wish the physics talk was dialled down. I have no idea and very little interest in the subject. If the references and chapter headings are meant to mean anything in the context of the story, they have gone over my head.
2018 seemed to be the year of the duet for many romance authors and frankly, I was over it by the time December rolled around. I still have a lingering amount of exasperation with stories dragged out across several books, and that includes Motion. So yes, while I did enjoy it, I would recommend readers wait for the entire three books to be published before diving into Abram and Mona’s story.
And now it’s a wait for book number two. I am hoping for more Abram, more DaVinci family dynamics and a lot more romance.
Motion, book one of the Laws of Physics trilogy is available now.
Space, book two of the Laws of Physics trilogy is scheduled for release on March 11, 2019.
Time, book one of the Laws of Physics trilogy is scheduled for release on April 15, 2019.
Penny Reid’s humor is out of this world, so original. I just devour her stories!

Witty, funny, smart, and FUN, FUN, FUN! Penny Reid will never fail you, I promise. Mona is this fabulous, smart, quirky, gorgeous, woman trying to pass herself off as her outgoing, over the top attention seeking twin sister. Of course the funniest scenarios ensue.
Then there is Abe, a way too hot to be a babysitter/good friend of Mona’s brother/sexy musician who is suppose to be keeping an eye on Mona’s twin/Mona. Still with me? If not it doesn’t matter. Read this book! I loved the push and pull between Abe and Mona. But beware….this is a cliffhanger. No happily ever after, more like WHAT?!!! I totally thought I got a bad copy that was missing the last couple chapters. I CANNOT WAIT for more. One click, but get the next book too, otherwise you might pull your hair out a little, lol.
