Love has never been an option.Lauren Ambrose has made a life for herself as a fledging artist, far from the ancient secrets and cobwebbed past of her family’s historic estate in Texas. But when her grandmother, matriarch of the Ambrose fortune, requires Lauren to attend an urgent business meeting, she reluctantly travels home.
Nick Matthews is ready for a battle. Lillian Ambrose, co-founder of Ambrose Oil, has agreed to hear his investment idea, but no one has ever successfully partnered with the business tycoon. When he arrives at Ambrose Estate, prepared with weeks of research, the last person he expects to meet is Lauren, a dynamic and captivating woman with a past full of secrets. As Nick gets to know Lauren, he discovers she is mostly perfect for him, except for one, major drawback . . . The curse that has the power to destroy everything between them.

-‘“He’s a swindler, Grandma,” Sofia said. “I looked him up, and he takes over companies and crushes them. Turns them over to someone else, making money. He’s nothing but a used-car salesman. He doesn’t care about this land or our legacy.”’-
This is Lauren’s story. When a venture capitalist comes calling, intrigued by the possibility of more oil to be refined at Ambrose Estates, grand-daughters Sofia and Lauren don’t trust the man as far as they can throw him. And that’s just what they hope to do: throw him out!
-‘He was a bloodsucking, pompous, interfering . . .’-
I’m very pleased that the books match each other in style, despite being written by different authors. There is a smooth flow from one story to another. This reminds me of the old show from the ‘80s ‘Dallas’.
Well-written and recommended. This is a clean romance.
I received a free copy of the audiobook version of this book by Heather B. Moore, but this is my honest and voluntary opinion. The story is about Lauren Ambrose and Nick Matthews. He wants to put her family’s oil wells under a venture contract, and Lauren and her sister are hesitant. Lauren is an artist who doesn’t want to fall in love because of the family curse of men dying early. I would highly recommend reading or listening to this book.
I listened to the audio version. Such a good series! I enjoyed this story of strong women trying to lift a family curse with support of strong male characters. The narrator was fantastic! I can’t wait to see what the rest of the series brings!.
Mostly Perfect: The Women of Ambrose Estate by Heather B. Moore (4.5 stars)
I liked that there was angst but, just like in book one, it was mostly on the heroine’s side. Nick knew that he felt differently about Lauren than he had about any other woman and was ready to pursue her. At the same time, when the curse is revealed in its entirety, he waits, hoping but not knowing if she’ll come around.
Nick is good for Lauren; he gets her out and about. She is good for him because she has a kind, pure heart and doesn’t value wealth or status; she values people. She’s perfectly content to live a simple, non-materialistic life as an artist. (Her miniatures sound really special, I wonder if they are based on a real artist’s art?)
The fulfilling of the curse is cool; not as heart-wrenching as the first book’s was, but certainly more creepy and mysterious.
A hard-to-put-down read! You can’t go wrong with a Heather B. Moore book!
Narration: 4.5 stars
Reagan Boggs has a smooth, southern accent that perfectly “voices” the women of Ambrose. Male voice is deep enough to be believable and the feel of her books is calm and soothing, but not boring. (I wish she had done a British accent for the ancestor’s journal, but that isn’t a true complaint, just a wish.) A wonderful voice actress to whom I will happily listen again!
*poor, **ok, ***good, ****very good, *****something special
Lauren gets her chance to break the curse in this story. It surprised me what she chose to give up to get her happily ever after. I highly recommend this series of mysteries.
I love the interaction between what on the surface appears two totally different personalities. I have enjoyed the series but made the mistake of reading Book 4 first. I had to put what I knew was coming aside but it didn’t take away from enjoying this book.
CAn Lauren believe in breaking the curse and fall in love and live a full life? The Ambrose curse is a very dangerous one, it means death to the men that marry an Ambrose woman. But charming Nick will fight to reach Lauren’s heart. A sweet love story
Maybe I chose to read this novel at the wrong time, but I really struggled to get through this book. I never quite connected with the heroine, Lauren, for some reason, and though the love story between her and Nick is sweet, I still fought to stay engaged.
There is some intrigue with the Ambrose curse that quietly looms over the Ambrose women, and a little drama with an ex did pique my interest, but even then I still felt like there was something missing. I love Heather B. Moore’s writing, which is a big reason why I kept going, hoping that I would better engage with the plot and characters with time, and there were times I thought about calling it quits, but I’m glad I stayed the course, as the ending was happy and quite satisfying.
This was the only book that I’ve read in the series, and even though it can be read as a standalone, maybe if I’d read the first book in the series I would’ve better connected with the characters. I do plan on eventually reading the first one to see if my hypothesis is correct, but for now I am glad I stuck it out, but I’d be lying if I say I wasn’t a little disappointed, as this was not “perfect” for me.
This series is amazing for a number of reasons! The first one is that you can read each book as a stand alone. Having read them all is nice to tie things together, but it is absolutely not necessary. The Ambrose curse has been hard at work for years and no men tied to an Ambrose girl has lived to tell about it. So Lauren shies away from the one man who shows he cares, but does he? Is he interested in her for her family’s money and business or does he actually care for her? And if he does, how can she actually be with Nick because the curse will kill him; it is only a matter of time. The world building is fantastic and I was completely swept away into the Ambrose world! If you love a book with substance that is easy to read and will have the pages flying, then this is definitely the book for you! I received a copy of this book for free; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Lauren is scared of love because of a generations old curse on her family. Nick is willing to learn everything possible about the curse because he thinks Lauren is worth the effort. Can they overcome it and have their HEA?
Overshadowing the romance is the mystery of a curse placed on the family several generations past. Since then, all the males die young or tragically. But is there a way to overcome it a break the curse? That’s what Lauren must find out. And, when she learns what is required, is she strong enough to do it?
The romance part of this is fantastic. Nick is every girl’s dream boyfriend and he delivers as expected from such a character. Lauren is strong despite her fear over the curse and I found myself sympathetic to her.
Romance – PG / kissing
Language – PG / clean
Violence – one scene where secondary character acts threatening
My rating – 4 stars
The saga of the Ambrose women continues with Lauren’s story, which is written by one of my favorite authors. Lauren’s an artist and really different than her older sister Sofia (who we met in [book:Mostly Dangerous|47868022]). She doesn’t let people know she’s an Ambrose, she’d learned people tend to treat you differently when they know you come from wealth, and she never goes on more than five dates with a guy because of the whole curse thing. Lauren’s not sure why her grandmother summoned her to Ambrose Estate, but when she gets there she’s not happy to discover the venture capitalist her grandmother wants to do business with is Nicholas Matthews.
I loved Lauren and Nicholas’ first meeting–arguing over a cab–and that he knew exactly who she was, but she didn’t know him from Adam. Their second meeting in the library was also pretty good when she “uninvites” him to Ambrose Estate to give his business proposal. Sparks were flying.
What can I say about Nick that hasn’t already been said by other reviewers? He’s about as perfect as a guy can be. Even though he and Lauren had a super rocky start he came when she called in the middle of the night. As someone else said “he pays attention to the small things”, what woman wouldn’t fall for that kind of guy? I also loved that he kept buying her paintings, and not because he’s a nice guy. Nick has his work cut out for him if he’s going to win Lauren over to his side, as she’s never alllowed herself to fall for anyone because of that blasted curse. Speaking of the dreaded curse, I wondered what she would have to do to break it; I figured it out about the same time she did.
I really like this new series, I know I say that about every series Heather B. Moore writes but she knows how to write characters that make me care about them. I can’t wait to read about the other Ambrose sisters and what they’ll do to break the curse.
Nick, Nick, I love Nick. And yeah. That’s how I’m going to start out my review. I love Nick because he pays attention. It’s all in the small things.
The idea behind this series is a fun one. This is the second book in the series and I have to say that I didn’t read the first book by a different author. I started it but didn’t finish it. It just wasn’t pulling me in like I wanted and honestly I just don’t have time for books that don’t click for me. I knew I would like this one because I haven’t read a Heather B. Moore book that I didn’t like.
There is a family curse that haunts the Ambrose sisters. It means no falling in love and no getting married. Lauren has been able to stick to the rules until Nick. Nick is just determined to win Lauren over. He is persistent, kind and demonstrative but Lauren is rightly freaked out by the curse and can’t help herself- pushing men away is what she does.
The story was frustrating and it was sweet. I am very interested in the remaining Ambrose sisters now! I want to know how each of them will deal with love and the curse.
