“A breathtaking work of imagination, Hester Shaw is a heroine for the ages. The moment we finished reading this book we knew we wanted to make it into a movie.” — Producer Peter Jackson * “Reeve’s [Mortal Engines] remains a landmark of visionary imagination.” — School Library Journal, starred review 窶銀窶起ow a major motion picture produced by Peter Jackson! London is hunting again. Emerging … Jackson!
London is hunting again. Emerging from its hiding place in the hills, the great Traction City is chasing a terrified little town across the wastelands. Soon London will feed.
In the attack, Tom Natsworthy is flung from the speeding city with a murderous scar-faced girl. They must run for their lives through the wreckage — and face a terrifying new weapon that threatens the future of the world.
Beloved storyteller Philip Reeve creates a brilliant new world in the Mortal Engines series, called “phenomenal… violent and romantic, action-packed and contemplative, funny and frightening” by the Sunday Times.

Thanks to his movie based on this book, inspires me to visit this series or any other novels by Mr.Reeve!
Such an original idea, a bleak future awaits earth if this novel is anything to go on — fast-paced, plenty of action, and quirky humour laced throughout — a grim tale of a world on wheels.
I watched this movie recently and enjoyed it, so I figured it was about time I read the book. It’s very creative and a lot of fun. The idea of mobile cities that survive by “eating” smaller cities and towns is completely original. But I was surprised how willing the author was to kill characters off.
Barnaby Edwards does a fantastic job with this story. He has a distinctive voice for every character and I really enjoyed listening.
The movie is… not good. The book really, really is.
As I read thies book, a movie played within my mind. Its a very well crafted world, with an intretsing idea.
I bought this fabulous book for my 13 year old son, then an enthusiastic sci-fi reader who wanted some cool new titles for his book review assignments. Everyone in the family ended up falling in love with this wildly creative story — each of us for our own reasons. It has something to offer any reader who enjoys action packed, sci-fi / fantasy with vivid, richly imagined setting and cast of characters you will love, root for and want more of. I hope the author will continue to share his amazing imagination with his delighted fans of all ages.
This author built a fascinating and believable world. I loved the main characters, too. Very compelling!
Really good book. Recommended by my son! Could be a stand alone, but it is a series if you want to continue with the story.
This world is unapologetically impractical. That makes it a lot of fun and it gets an A from me for worldbuilding. Its story and characters are a little cliche. Overall it’s well written. The movie was a disaster, but I’d still give this book a chance if you’re looking for a fun adventure.
interesting story in concept. The world-building is horrible. The book is entertaining if you don’t think about the setting too hard. Things just work with no reasonable explanation as to how it works. The make-believe science is terrible. It’s supposed to be a city the size of London that moves. Yet somehow it moves like a compact car. Case in point. A mile-long freight train takes miles to come to a full stop. The mobile city does it in seconds. The author bends the rules to make it fit the story.
Childish, yet entertaining. The first of its kind in steampunk.
Moral Engines brings to life a fantastic world of futuristic steam punk themes, where entire cities are mobile and hunt each other in what is know as “Municipal Darwinism.” Tom Natsworthy is a young historian living on London, who by happenstance gets thrust into a giant conspiracy and the fate of London hangs on his shoulders. A fun new world to experience in this first book!
Everything was going on relatively predictable, and the only mysteries were when the characters would understand the things we realized long ago. In the end, if you peel away the adventures and fast pace, you are left under a fairly basic plot. Add something to this book that will make my curiosity scream, and it will be perfect. But even as it is, it’s really awesome.
