Darrow would have lived in peace, but his enemies brought him war. The Gold overlords demanded his obedience, hanged his wife, and enslaved his people. But Darrow is determined to fight back. Risking everything to transform himself and breach Gold society, Darrow has battled to survive the cutthroat rivalries that breed Society’s mightiest warriors, climbed the ranks, and waited patiently to unleash the revolution that will tear the hierarchy apart from within.
Finally, the time has come.
But devotion to honor and hunger for vengeance run deep on both sides. Darrow and his comrades-in-arms face powerful enemies without scruple or mercy. Among them are some Darrow once considered friends. To win, Darrow will need to inspire those shackled in darkness to break their chains, unmake the world their cruel masters have built, and claim a destiny too long denied—and too glorious to surrender.
Praise for Morning Star
“There is no one writing today who does shameless, Michael Bay–style action set pieces the way Brown does. The battle scenes are kinetic, bloody, breathless, crazy. Everything is on fire all the time.”—NPR
“Morning Star is this trilogy’s Return of the Jedi. . . . The impactful battles that make up most of Morning Star are damn near operatic. . . . It absolutely satisfies.”—Tordotcom
“Excellent . . . Brown’s vivid, first-person prose puts the reader right at the forefront of impassioned speeches, broken families, and engaging battle scenes . . . as this interstellar civil war comes to a most satisfying conclusion.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)
“A page-turning epic filled with twists and turns . . . The conclusion to Brown’s saga is simply stellar.”—Booklist (starred review)

Over the weekend, I finished Morning Star, the final book in the Red Rising trilogy. Overall, I found it a satisfying conclusion to the series, but struggled to make myself read a bit every day rather than finishing it in one sitting like I did the last two.
Has anyone else finished it yet? What did you think?
Government is never the solution, but it is almost always the problem.
– Chapter 21
The Reaper has come. And he’s brought hell with him.
– Chapter 48
Everything grand is made from a series of ugly little moments. Everything worthwhile by hours of self-doubt and days of drudgery. All the works by people you and I admire sit atop a foundation of failures.

This is a wonderful ending to an amazing series. I couldn’t wait to see what would happen, but I didn’t want it to end. At one point I was so upset by an event that I wanted to scream. That’s a sign of a great book!

If you enjoy reading, adventure, sci-fi, or pretty much any amazing story, try this series.
I flew through the second book in this series, GOLDEN SON, and then I finished off the Red Rising trilogy with MORNING STAR by Pierce Brown. I’m not gonna lie. This book made me cry at the end. It was so good, and the whole trilogy will go down as my favorite. I loved the writing, the plot twists, the characters. I was completely invested in the trilogy from beginning to end. Brown did an amazing job with this series, and I recommend it to whomever I run into.
In this the final episode in the author’s “Red Rising” trilogy you have a space opera to end them all. Born a “Red” in a caste system where there is no lower rung, Darrow rebels. Masquerading as one of the Gold overlords he struggles to unite mankind and to destroy the society that holds everyone in bondage.
The characters are vivid, the action is frenetic and the future here imagined is spectacular. The treacherous enemy must be overcome by stratagems that turn the plot in corkscrew fashion. It is easily the most addictive book I have read this year. And it comes as no surprise that “Morning Star” was selected as a 2016 Goodreads Choice Award winner in the Science Fiction category.
Absolutely loved this first book in a stunning trilogy. I haven’t been this absorbed by a single book, let alone 3, in a really long time. Can’t stop recommending this book to every person I know that reads (on purpose) 😉
Brown almost nails the ending, but he fails to stick a perfect landing to complete his masterwork. Still loved it, but could have been a wee bit better on the ending.
This whole series is absolutely amazing.
I LOVED this book and the whole series!
4.5 stars
I’m still as obsessed with this series as I was at the beginning (a week ago). I’m skipping the review for Golden Son because I’m lazy. At the end, this review will cover all of my feelings for this series. And all I can say is READ IT!!!
iIf you love Game of Thrones – read this series.
lIf you love Hunger Games – read this series.
iIf you love Star Wars – read this series.
This series has everything that makes it unputdownable. An amazing cast with fantastically layered and complex characters: Darrow, Mustang, Sevro, Victra, Cassius, Roque, The Jackal, Ares, and so many more. Epic space battles that left me speechless. And twists and turns that made my head spin. On top of a storyline that never got boring.
I honestly believe that reading this series was one of the best things I could have done this year. After finishing Morning Star I had the biggest book hangover in recent months, and I wanted to read book four immediately. But I decided to wait with reading Iron Gold until right before the release of Dark Age – I want it to be fresh in my mind and if I’m honest I want to be part the Howlers.
Morning Star answered quite a few of my questions. And it also satisfyingly concluded many arc subplots. And most of all it did end with a HEA for two of my favorite couples. All in all the third book was as captivating and thrilling as the two previous books – which wasn’t a surprise at all. And I must admit, I would have continued reading – I’m hooked and totally and unapologetically obsessed with this saga.
All everyone needs to know is that this series is unique, epic, and hands down one of the most intriguing stories I’ve read in a long time.
The Red Rising series, of which this is book three (and which should be the last) is well worth a read if you don’t mind lots of violence, war, death and destruction. Interesting characters (and lots of them) in an interesting story arc. The weakness is that the main characters make a lot of really dumb mistakes that get them into yet another round of trouble, but I guess that’s what keeps the story going. It will suck you in and make you want to keep reading to see what happens next. And, from time to time, it will fool and surprise you.
On one hand I was glad that the story came to conclusion. The story overall was very good. On the other hand there were many parts of the story that were predictable or contrived which was a bit of a downer for me. I recommend the entire series, as it was good overall.
Morning Star is a fantastic conclusion to the Red Rising Trilogy. Darrow’s transition from childhood to hero and then back to his roots in the mines comes full circle. Many unanswered questions are resolved in ways I did not expect.
Morning star is full of cinematic sequences begging to be displayed on the movie screen. I appreciate the political/social commentary and the ever-present debate about what makes the “right” thing right. The character building and development climaxes in this third part of the series, even to the point that I was crying during an emotional and moving scene (and I do not cry very often, especially in books!).
Straight forward recommendation: get this book! You will appreciate it and so will the many others that you tell. It is a book/series that is hard not to talk about.
One of the most solid trilogies I ever read. Each entry had a point in the story and never fell like a filler as a lot of times it feels with so-called trilogies that have no business creating three books – Divergent is a series that comes to mind.
This final chapter to the story of Darrow, is a solid conclusion providing more context about the Red Rising universe and the relationships between the different planet overlords. The ending is well developed and gives satisfying closure to the story.
Ever read a book and just don’t know how to review it? That’s me right now with Morning Star.
The first 80 pages HURT. I read the last 100 pages in one day, and maybe that’s why the ending didn’t hit me as hard as the first two books. That’s not a criticism, though, I’m pleased that not all my fears came true – but it also makes me extremely paranoid of the next book in this series. Morning Star, for me, left on a happy note (again, that’s just my opinion – my mum read this at the same time as me and found it very painful, but then she read the last 100 pages in three sittings, not one), and I don’t trust it.
Don’t get me wrong though, I cried plenty throughout XD
I read the first three books back to back, but I need a little break before I dive into Iron Gold. As I said, I’m worried and don’t trust the happy notes this one ended on. I’ve been told that Iron Gold is *intense*, and I’m not in the right head space for that right now.
If you haven’t picked up this series yet, you really need to. Grab your favourite comfort food, some tissues because chances are good you’ll ugly-cry, and enjoy ^-^
Well, another amazing book to follow Red Rising!!!! I could not put this down. The originality is above and beyond. It’s written in a way that keeps you coming back for more. There’s so much going on throughout the story – never a chance to become bored. I love the characters, and I love the incorporation of new characters that are well developed. So looking forward to starting the next book!
Wow. Originally this story finished the Red Rising series and what an ending. The book is filled with surprises and sad farewells.
The author lost the plot. I could not finish this book. Darrow (the hero) inexplicably begins to give his enemies the benefit of the doubt for no apparent reason, and despite knowing how ruthless they are, with dire consequences. Which, in my opinion, he deserved for being so stupid. I don’t know how this ended because I just couldn’t get past such a ridiculous, nonsensical actions. Very disappointing.
This series was absolutely amazing I read day and night through the first three
Why is this not a movie yet?!?!
