A nineteen-year-old girl named Sunshine disappears one evening from the backcountry commune where she lives. She’s found the next day about a mile away, dead by strangulation. The other residents of the commune, an unusual collection of dropouts from society, are all potential suspects as Deputy Sheriff Manny Rivera tries to make sense of an odd collection of clues. In the end, the … the deputy’s own life is endangered as he gets closer to understanding the motive for Sunshine’s murder.

Deputy Manny Rivera catches a seemingly senseless murder of a young girl who lives in a remote squatter commune. More bodies pile up, his boss is demanding Manny’s support in his re-election and Manny’s policewoman / girlfriend is coming to visit for a weekend. Things are getting interesting!
Good police procedural. Loved reading about the area around Moab.
Really enjoyed sifting through to find the truth.
This was a terrific book with unexpected turnings. I would love to read more by this author.
I read this book because of its location, one I used to know well. It was interesting to see how the main character would solve the crime. Story line was good, entertaining.
This is the second book I have read in this series. Great characters, great locations, great story. Will definitely read more in the series.
loved the many in depth descriptive passages of the desert area around Moab and how beautiful it really is. story line original and insightful. thoroughly enjoyed!!!
I especially this series due to its locale — Moab UT. The author sets his novels in the area around Moab, as well as events in the actual town. He references actual stores / locations in town. And the stories are interesting in themselves — mysteries with a believable “everyperson’s” police man as the lead character in solving the murder.
I really enjoyed reading this book. The characters were well developed and the setting was completely believable. It made me want to revisit Moab and the surrounding area.
Love that it is a clean language book and fun to read. Love that area of the country and have played in the sand and red rocks often. Great read, and reminds me of Tony Hillerman books. Try it!
Read the whole series ,loved them once you start reading it’s hard to put down.would read more. Thank you
Every thing turns out alright for the good guys. Interesting views of the setting and the people that choose to occupy the high desert country.
Interesting story of a small southwest town.
I love of all Rich Curtin’s books. They have lots of background in addition to the
story, and the stories catch you up in them. Don’t want to put the book down, till it’s finished.
Well-written and intriguing
I love the Manny Rivera series. The characters are real and the murder solving intriguing. Great genre read.
A great read. A real thriller. Really enjoyed reading this book.
I enjoyed this book very much because it was very well written and introduced to a part of the country –the rugged Moab desert in Utah–about which I knew very little. Via his characters and their activities, author Rich Curtain portrays the physical space as well as its heart far better than any travel book. On the one hand, much of this information was new to me. However, it was presented so seamlessly in the plot and dialogue none of it stuck me as alien. I felt like I was part of it rather than a visitor or spectator. That doesn’t happen often.
Great descriptions of the area, view & general local! This was down-to-earth, kept your attention, interesting with a surprise ending. It was a quick read with heart and a lot of thought provoking. Loved it!
really liked this book, and recommend it
