I absolutely LOVED this book! So man twist and turns it keeps you wanting more! Looking forward to book 2 and reading more from this author!
Many parallels to our world today with our prejudices and preconceived ideas. Definitely a page turner.
Amazing Story. The narrator Emma Lysy was hard to follow at first. The narrator grew on me as she grew into her character. I couldn’t get into the story the first chapter or so and had to keep rewinding it because I just couldn’t get into it. After the desert scene I started to get wrapped up more and more into this intriguing story. This is a wonderful story about Kai, a strong female lead who in her first 17 years of life has to pretend to be a boy. Girls who are born as Moonburners are killed by the king of the sunburners. The story unfolds amazingly and there are many twists and turns. When she is found out to be a Moonburner she is sent to wander the desert naked and alone with no water. During this her sieshen, Quitsu appears. I loved the bonding of animals to burners and the meaning of it for them. The biggest downfall to this story was that it too SO LONG for anything to really spark at all with Kai and Hiro. But the storyline will drive you on but if you are looking for a story with any romance in it this is not for you. But overall the story was amazing. I loved all the secrets that you get to see unfold and the creatures you get to meet. Overall I recommend this book and audiobook highly! It was a pleasure to listen to.
This was a magic filled start to the Moonburner Cycle series! Kai was supposed to die when she was born for being a Moonburner, but instead her parents raised and disguised her as a boy. Seventeen years later, her secret is out and she’s sentenced to death, but her story is just beginning. Kai has a strong, loyal, and guarded personality with an open mind that allowed her to not believe everything people told her. I really enjoyed her bond with Quitsu, her seishen and their journey throughout the book. Seishens are like spirit guides for worthy burners and Quitsu was devoted, humorous, snarky, and protective of Kai. I loved learning about Moonburners and Sunburners- their magic, history, prophecy, and the war that is going on. I’ve only read one other book with Moonburners before, but even though their were some similarities, it still felt pretty unique. This book was filled with action, betrayal, friends and foes, magic, and many secrets waiting to be revealed.
Emma did a fantastic job with this narration! It was easy to tell when she was narrating dialogue and inner thoughts. I thought she voiced Kai and her emotions perfectly and she kept me hooked until the very end.
*I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Wonderfully imaginative and engaging tale. I liked the storyline and plot. To me MoonBurner is vaguely reminiscent of a younger version of Meg Anne’s Chosen series with a slightly Mulan-ish feel to it. The characters are likable and it was easy to become invested in them. I only wish I could of gotten to know some a little more. Maybe as the series goes on there’ll be more character development for them. Otherwise MoonBurner was quite enjoyable. The narrator did a great job bringing the story to life. I look forward to finding out what happens in the next book.
I fell head over heels with this book and Kai!! I love her!!
She endures so much and overcomes a lot and is a very strong female lead. Action packed and it kept me on the edge of my seat!! So good! Make sure you can lock yourself away from the world when you read this book. I was unable to put the book down.
Audio: I very much enjoyed the narrator. I haven’t heard her before but she was very enjoyable and brought the story to another level!
A sweeping read!
Her secret is revealed…
And she’s sentenced to death…
A thrilling read that will leave you breathless for more. The anticipation will keep you interested and eager for the next chapter.
Wonderful and brilliant world-building. Breathtaking story. Lovely writing. The author is absolutely talented!
Full of war, death, lies, fate, magic, family, friendships, adventure and love.
Perfect for readers of fantasy romances.
“The moon cannot enslave the sun, nor make the day its mistress.”
I absolutely loved this dark yet playful romp through an ancient Japanese-like fantasy culture. As an anime fan and gamer, I found this YA tale refreshing and somewhat original when compared to the other coming-of-age adventure stories out there at present. Especially the use of Seishen, animal companions that are tied to a burner’s soul.
“As far as I’m concerned, the world is better off without burners in it. Maybe this is our fate. What we have become. Let us slaughter each other and leave the world better off without us.”
The story follows Kai, a moonburner, and her sassy, snarky seishen, a silver fox named Quitsu. Together, they unravel a sinister plot that could mean the end to her and her enemy’s kind–the burners. Lies and betrayals form a path for Kai until the truth “burns” for release. And, when it does, it sets the world on its side.
“Or victory shall spell defeat, a crimson sky its auspice. The sun and moon must shine as one, or all will be undone.”
Filled with harrowing battles, trials of friendship, hilarious dialogue, and the dangers of falling in love, Moonburner is sure to thrill to the very last page. Claire Luana’s writing is vivid and her world is beautifully imagined. And, seriously, I can’t get enough of Quitsu!
Highly recommended.
