THE FIRST MERCY THOMPSON NOVEL!Moon Called is the novel that introduced Patricia Briggs’s Mercy Thompson to the world and launched a #1 bestselling phenomenon… Mercy Thompson is a shapeshifter, and while she was raised by werewolves, she can never be one of them, especially after the pack ran her off for having a forbidden love affair. So she’s turned her talent for fixing cars into a business … talent for fixing cars into a business and now runs a one-woman mechanic shop in the Tri-Cities area of Washington State.
But Mercy’s two worlds are colliding. A half-starved teenage boy arrives at her shop looking for work, only to reveal that he’s a newly changed werewolf—on the run and desperately trying to control his animal instincts. Mercy asks her neighbor Adam Hauptman, the Alpha of the local werewolf pack, for assistance.
But Mercy’s act of kindness has unexpected consequences that leave her no choice but to seek help from those she once considered family—the werewolves who abandoned her…
“In the increasingly crowded field of kick-ass supernatural heroines, Mercy stands out as one of the best.”—Locus

This is more sci fiction than romance. It was still entertaining.
Great start to this series. Never a dull moment…
This is a NON-SPOILER REVIEW. Moon Called by Patricia Briggs is the first Mercy Thompson book. This amazing series introduces us the Columbia Basin Pack and all their various adventures. The book offers spectacular world building, well developed and emotionally committed characters and a braid of lives intermingled in ways that leave you gasping and rubbing your forehead! Mercy Thompson isn’t just any shifter and Moon Called is just the first stepping stone into the life of shifters, fae, vampires, witches and others. This is a series you’re going to want to make room for on your Keeper Shelf! What!?! No Keeper Shelf? Well, make room you’ll be glad you did!
This book is a very enjoyable shifter read. New to this author, I jumped in without really thinking about it (so unlike me) and found this book to be the most “realistic” shifter book I’ve ever read. I liked the real characters, the real action and how they worked out things by thinking them through; reasonable deduction. There is magic and shifting in this book, but it felt accurate and real.
There is a lot of world building, character description, and relationship growth in thus story. Less action then I was expecting, but I think as the series goes on there will be more. I enjoyed everything about the book with the exception of the last two or three pages (before the epilogue like chapter). I felt like the action finishes and then every outstanding question that was still unanswered was answered in just three paragraphs. I would gave liked at least a chapter of explanation. I am very much looking forward to the next book in this series.
It’s the first of a great series. One I will read again.
I have heard such high praise for Lorelei King’s audio work that I took advantage of Audible’s latest sales to snag the first book of one of my all-time favorite Urban Fantasy series. Love Patricia Briggs’ writing and was introduced to it through this book.
The story of a captivating woman who sees herself as something less since she’s a coyote shifter in the world of powerful fae, werewolves, and vampires. This doesn’t stop her from doing what she must for a needing boy and her friends.
I love the blend of mystery and the intro to a new paranormal world and characters.
As for the adding of the audio element, just wow. Loved experiencing this story with Lorelei King’s storytelling ability. Her voice is raspy, but it works for this genre that gets gritty and action-packed.
All around abso-fab reading experience.
Characters you feel you would want to meet and care about. Like so many of Patricia Briggs very hard to put down.
I love the Mercy Thompson series. I have every book and I even have the graphic novels. I look forward to more of this series. The characters are well developed, as well as the story line, mysterious and intriguing.
I love Patricia Briggs books and recommend them to anyone who enjoys fantasy
Love this series!!! Fun read!
Love this series so much. I’ve been following it for 11 years. The characters are so real, so diverse, and easy to fall in love with. Mercy is a cool, funny, sarcastic, and smart protagonist, despite her mystical second nature having the side effect of easily sucking her into trouble.
Anything by Patricial Briggs is worth reading. I like to have a digital copy and a printed copy of her books.
I love this series. Awesome storyline.
I really enjoyed this book. In fact it was the jumping off point for me to continue the series.
A kick-ass female mechanic as a heroine, lots of sexy but complex male characters competing for her attention and a complex world set in a real place–what’s not to love? I re-read this series every time a new book comes out and find new things to enjoy each time.
I love the Mercy Thompson series! I have read each one as they were released. They are hard hitting and a little gritty but they have heart! I recommend these books to anyone who likes werewolf books.
A fun read with likable (and unlikeable) characters. Briggs can really write, and builds a world that you wish you lived in.
A protagonist with enough snark to keep you smirking through the whole book.
OBS! This is a review of the whole series (excluding alpha and omega, of course). No spoilers, I promise!
Where to start? There is so much to take up since it is a general review of the whole series, but I will try to keep it short. Let’s start with the head character Mercy. It’s difficult to create such a headstrong and lovable character, but this author has really succeeded! She is written as a heroic highly independent woman that pretty much spits on the “damsel in distress” stereotype that one finds in many other books, and though there is some sexism in the series Mercy is the balance for it and never lets it get in the way of her independence. At the same time that independence can also be seen as a flaw as she has problem with trust and intimacy (and who can blame her really?) which I really like as well, since it makes her a much more realistic and recognizable character. It builds up the personality more that way. To summarize, I think the thing that makes this series so enjoyable is Mercy; her independence streak, her jokes and all the relationships that develops throughout the whole series.
Many probably thinks that the books relationships are a bit dull since they are not packed with romance and drama all the time, but for me it makes it all the more exiting and exhilarating whenever it actually happens. Also, since Mercy’s flaw is her difficulty to get close to another it actually makes a lot of sence that it takes some time. And that same flaw gives the romance more flare with twists and arguments and drama. And who doesn’t love drama?
The only big problem I really have with the series is that there isn’t a big red line throughout the series. What I mean with that is that although relationships keeps developing and minor character shows up in later books, there are a new incident in every book. There is always a new bad guy/guys and always something new that happens that Mercy has to help with in every book. I guess it’s individual if you like that kind of form in a series and it doesn’t bother me too much, mainly because it’s still the same characters in every book.
For those who like supernatural, with action and romance and strong independent women, I highly recommend this series. It has it all; excitement, drama, mystery, love … You name it!
Love Patricia Briggs
I’ve read all the books in the series so for and they just keep getting better! Can’t wait for the next one.
