THE FIRST MERCY THOMPSON NOVEL!Moon Called is the novel that introduced Patricia Briggs’s Mercy Thompson to the world and launched a #1 bestselling phenomenon… Mercy Thompson is a shapeshifter, and while she was raised by werewolves, she can never be one of them, especially after the pack ran her off for having a forbidden love affair. So she’s turned her talent for fixing cars into a business … talent for fixing cars into a business and now runs a one-woman mechanic shop in the Tri-Cities area of Washington State.
But Mercy’s two worlds are colliding. A half-starved teenage boy arrives at her shop looking for work, only to reveal that he’s a newly changed werewolf—on the run and desperately trying to control his animal instincts. Mercy asks her neighbor Adam Hauptman, the Alpha of the local werewolf pack, for assistance.
But Mercy’s act of kindness has unexpected consequences that leave her no choice but to seek help from those she once considered family—the werewolves who abandoned her…
“In the increasingly crowded field of kick-ass supernatural heroines, Mercy stands out as one of the best.”—Locus

A fresh take on the urban fantasy ‘all mythological creatures are real and coexist with humans’ trope. Heroine Meredith Gentry is a shifter of a different sort, trying to find her place in life surrounded by European-style werewolves.
Love the characters
I love this books! How she was able to mix so many of the supernatural so easily together was flawless! I have read the whole series and it was one that I could hardly wait for the next book to come out! Mercedes is funny and with her free Spirit attitude just adds to the fun and adventure as she finds out more about the world she live in.
A were coyote mechanic? Who specializes in foreign cars? She fixes Rabbits during the day and chases them at night! This book is awesome!
The Mercedes Thompson series is off to a strong start with Moon Called.
Mercy Thompson is one of the tough cookie. I have always loved the wit and strong female characters in Brigg’s writing.
Patricia Briggs writes in a way that keeps you turning pages. Her characters are interesting & plots engaging!
Mercy Thompson is one of my favorite characters of all time!
Loved it
Read every book in the series and always waiting for the next one. Great characters!
It’s been a long time since I’ve done a reread of the Mercy Thompson series. So long, I’d almost forgotten just how good these books are.
Mercy checks off all my boxes for an Urban Fantasy. She’s an underdog (or should I say under coyote?) amongst a pack of wolves and other scary things. She’s constantly underestimated and thought of as weak, but she’s anything but.
After her mother found a coyote in her crib, wolves raised her until circumstances forced her back to her mother’s home where her new family is plain human. She’s always felt like she’s on the outside looking in. Even so, as coyotes do, she adapted to each situation and figured out how to survive without losing her spirit.
The werewolves in Ms. Briggs world come off as being almost unstable. They have quick tempers and their very nature’s lean toward violence at the drop of a hat. They have to have the utmost control or things go bad quickly. This has resulted in rigid pack structure where only the strong survive and only the strongest rule. Because of the violence inherent in their whole being, even though they could be immortal, the average lifespan is a mere ten years after the first change. Not a happy-go-lucky existence at all.
It’s not just shifters, there are also witches of the creepy variety (think Baba Yaga), fae, and a coven of vampires, all extremely mysterious and seriously dangerous. In other words, this isn’t a world for the faint of heart.
If you are looking for romance, you won’t find it in this first installment, although Adam, the sexy local alpha, makes things all kinds of interesting. He also happens to be Mercy’s neighbor. I loved the passive-aggressive ways Mercy dealt with his overbearing alpha ways.
Mercy’s life as a VW mechanic is clicking along when trouble in the form of a teenage runaway who is a brand spanking new wolf finds his way to Mercy’s garage. Things go South in a hurry and Mercy ends up having to confront her past in order to save the day.
Fast-paced and full of depth along with one heck of an interesting new world to explore, Moon Called will keep you riveted to the pages from start to finish. If you love Urban Fantasy, this is a must read!
Rating: 5 Stars!
My favorite urban setting, so wonderful, I love this series
Another favourite UF series. Mercy is a fab heroine!
wow
I was late to the game getting into the Mercy Thompson books, but they’re pretty hard to dislike. Mercy is a great character among a cast of great characters, she’s funny and smart and will go to great lengths to screw with you if you make her angry.
There’s a lot to love about the series even if you’re not normally into the werewolf subgenre of Urban Fantasy. They’re great reads and Briggs only gets better with each successive book. You should definitely check them out.
Love Mercy and this series. Would recommend to anyone interested in shifters, werewolves and vampires with some fae thrown in. Really well done.
Love all of the Mercy books. Just reread this one. Mercy is a strong yet compassionate person. Love progressing through her interaction with the supernatural world.
This is one of my favourite series ever. I’ve lost count of how many times I read this book. I just can’t get enough of Mercy and Co.
I like all the books in this series.
Werewolves and vampires in Washington again, but these guys don’t sparkle. Briggs has created a fantastic cast of paranormal creatures and woven a plot that keeps the pages turning.
