After receiving I don’t know how many recommendations for me to try this series I was finally able to work it into my reading schedule. Now I totally understand why all the algorithms thought I needed to. Mercy is one fantastic main character. She kicks some butt all on her own even when everyone is underestimating her. The Fae have came out to the world for the most but all other forms of supernatural are still in hiding. Mercy is a Walker that can turn into a coyote that runs a car shop where she truly has some skills. She is minding her own business when trouble runs into her making it necessary for her to figure out what is going and exactly who is behind it. Full of fantastic characters for you to both love and hate. incredible world building that will really suck you in quick. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.
I get so excited every time I read this series. It always feels like I am reading the series for the first time, when I have probably read this book 10+ times now.
Mercy is one of my favorite heroines. She is smart, can kicks ass and can bake amazing desserts.
Brigg’s not only created amazing main characters but all the side characters are interesting and great as well. She really has done a perfect job of introducing this world and characters. I can’t get enough of it.
Fantastic writer, the world is so real I get immersed and can’t put the book down! Mercy is so likable and subtly clever. Love the characters!
I loved the Mercy Thompson series so much when I first encountered it, that I searched high and low through ‘urban fantasy’ trying to find more like that! I didn’t find it.
Mercy is a shape-shifting coyote, alone of her kind at first, once fostered by the biggest kahuna of all werewolves. She dances around the big guns of the supernatural world with agility and spunk and garage tools – she’s a VW mechanic for a living. I can’t put these books down. Highest possible recommendation for this whole series and the Alpha and Omega spin-off.
I can see why Patricia Briggs’ Mercy Thompson series is so popular; it’s an entertaining urban fantasy with a fun heroine at its center.
Recommending first books in series that I love. I remember when I first picked up Moon Called and discovered Mercy Thompson, that shapeshifting mechanic. I was so excited to find this urban fantasy heroine that was utterly original. I love that she’s a mechanic and that this doesn’t take place in some giant urban city but in a pretty rural area of Washington State.
Briggs is a master world-builder, handling the various mythologies that she weaves in with a deft touch. So worth diving into this series!
A wonderful shifter book. Mercy is a great heroine!
The premise is Mercy Thompson is a “Walker” (short for Skinwalker) a half-Blackfoot woman that can turn into a coyote at will. Working as a mechanic in the Tri-Cities of Washington State, she is an aggressively normal woman despite having such an oddball heritage as being raised by the Marrok (King) of the Werewolves and briefly being engaged to his son. She holds a 9-5 job, has never killed before the events of the book, and attends church regularly.
The books have a special place in my book shelf and should tell you everything about my opinion that I’ve read most of them twice. MOON CALLED, I’ve read about five times. I’ve also bought the book in physical format, ebook, comic book, and audiobook. What’s weird is I probably wouldn’t rank the series my favorite of all urban fantasy series. It’s just a book series I give high praise for consistency.
Mercy is lovable, her friends are lovable, the plots are fun, and the books stay that way.
I’ve never read anything from Patricia Briggs that I didn’t like.
I love Mercy!!! I love all the characrers, Bran, Charles, Adam, all the werwolves! I love the story and how different it is from most of the other paranormal books out there.
All I remember is that I fell in love with Mercy Thompson and couldn’t wait for the next book to come out. Mercy is a great character and the world she lives in was so original back then. Add the Alpha and Omega spin-off to this world and you have something unique, something memorable.
Mercy Thompson is not your typical girl. She is tough and works as a mechanic. She can change into a coyote too. I would recommend this series of you love adventure, werewolves, coyotes, and some magic. Patricia Briggs is a great writer and can write a read page turner.
This one is a little hard for me to rate. I am having a hard time pulling my scattered thoughts together about this book but I’ll try to be as clear as possible.
First of all, I honestly think that the reason I am struggling to put my thoughts down is that I bought into the hype of this series. I think that I hyped it up too much in my mind so I am feeling a little disappointed that it didn’t fully meet my expectations. I am not saying that I didn’t like or enjoy this book, because I did. I just expected to be over the moon with it and instead, I am finding that there are numerous things about the book that are just nagging at me.
The storytelling style wasn’t my favorite. It felt like much of the story fell victim to telling instead of showing the reader. There was an enormous amount of information dumping, especially in the beginning. I felt like some of those things would have been better discovered throughout the natural course of the story through scenes and character interactions and experiences rather than simply having the main character monologuing internally. A little bit of information dumping is fine but too much just slows the story down and makes it impersonal to the reader.
The world-building was excellent. The world was described vividly and it had a distinct feeling to it.
This book has a large cast of characters. At first, it was kind of difficult to keep everyone straight in my mind. I actually had to find a Mercy Thompson wiki online to help me keep things straight. I liked Mercy’s character well enough but there were things about her that nagged at me. I think that I was just a little disappointed because the Mercy I got was not the one that I had envisioned. I pictured Mercy as a total badass that kicked tail and took names and that wasn’t exactly what I got. The hype about her character really messed with me. Mercy was certainly headstrong and capable but she was very inexperienced and unknowledgeable. There were other things that irked me as well. For instance, Mercy lived in a werewolf community practically her whole life, and yet she oftentimes seemed ignorant to their ways. She also seemed ignorant to the workings of other supernaturals and I found that odd. She was just hyped as being a total badass when she was really just an inexperienced girl who was brave. The other characters I liked well enough. I wouldn’t say that I was overly connected to them though. They were likable but not entirely memorable. They were just lackluster and missing that spark. Many of them were mysterious and made me want to know more about them though. I am curious about how their characters will develop as the series continues.
The romance was hard to pin down. Mercy had several potential love interests with hints here and there for each one. She had a history with Samuel and even loved him. She and Adam had strange-ish chemistry and he seems super possessive of her even though she isn’t part of his pack. Sam said that Adam had claimed Mercy as his mate in front of his pack but there really wasn’t any further explanation about that. There wasn’t really any real romance in the book until the last few pages and it was a whisper of romance at best. Mercy’s thought process at the very end leaves possibilities open for her as she explores her feelings and who she really wants to be with. I guess we’ll see how it goes for her in the next book. This is a verrrrry slow-burn story so far.
This is probably a personal preference but I didn’t really care for all the religious undertones in the first half of the book. I don’t mind spiritual characters at all, but it starts to scratch at my skin if I notice it too heavily.
Lastly, I’d like to note that I listened to this book on audio. I think that this also plays into my overall feeling and rating for this book. I honestly didn’t much care for the narration. I thought that the narrator was skilled, so it isn’t that. It just felt like this voice actor was not the best fit for Mercy’s character. I could not get into the story as much because her voice just felt wrong to me for Mercy. Unfortunately, it was just a feeling that I couldn’t shake while listing to the book. And like it or not, the performance in an audiobook can really impact the way we experience a story.
Overall, I know that this review may sound fairly negative but it really isn’t. I enjoyed this book and I will definitely be continuing the series. I would definitely recommend this book. Briggs has created an interesting urban fantasy world with likable characters. I think that this series has a lot of potential and I am curious to see what kind of journey Briggs takes us on.

OMG I love this book. I couldn’t put it down from the very beginning. What isn’t to love about a bad a$$ female mechanic who is a shape shifter and grew up with Werewolves? Did I mention that two very dominate wolves are in hot pursuit while Mercedes is the hero of all the adventures? A must read for all paranormal romance fans!
I loved this and Mercy so much! I love a good shape shifter book. The story was so good. I was pulled into it from the beginning. I love that there are so many supernatural creatures in the story! I love the fae and vampires! I cannot wait to read more from this series.
Moon Called is the first book I can remember buying (as an adult) based on the cover alone. I didn’t even read the back, had never read Briggs, but the cover was so good I saw it on the shelf and bought it on sight alone.
It’s still one of my favorites. Rereading while recovering from surgery just reminded me why I wanted to be an author, why I wanted to write Urban Fantasy, and why Patricia Briggs is one of the best.
Its Mercedes Thompson enough said….
Oh my, I loved this story. I’d seen this series be recommended in book groups and on Facebook but always hesitated to start it because the series consists of so many books. I was afraid I’d get bored with it and quit after a few books. Unfortunately for my family, I picked up ‘Moon Called’ the day after Christmas this year and did almost nothing else but read it.
The story is engrossing, the characters, Mercy especially, are very well done and interesting, the pacing is good and the editing is outstanding.
If you like paranormal mysteries with a splash of romance, strong lead characters with a compelling supporting cast, you’ll enjoy this book. Now I know what all the buzz over this series is about and I’m hooked!
You kind of get thrown right in the middle of this world with little explanation but just roll with it, you’ll love the ride as everything unfolds!
Start of such a fabulous series. Mercy is my hero but the secondary characters stay with me. Such brilliant world building and LOL moments. I’m an audio girl so Lorelei King as narrator is awesome.
