THE FIRST MERCY THOMPSON NOVEL!Moon Called is the novel that introduced Patricia Briggs’s Mercy Thompson to the world and launched a #1 bestselling phenomenon… Mercy Thompson is a shapeshifter, and while she was raised by werewolves, she can never be one of them, especially after the pack ran her off for having a forbidden love affair. So she’s turned her talent for fixing cars into a business … talent for fixing cars into a business and now runs a one-woman mechanic shop in the Tri-Cities area of Washington State.
But Mercy’s two worlds are colliding. Mercy asks her neighbor Adam Hauptman, the Alpha of the local werewolf pack, for assistance.
But Mercy’s act of kindness has unexpected consequences that leave her no choice but to seek help from those she once considered family—the werewolves who abandoned her…

Moon Called is book one in the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs.
I read this series years ago and have re-read it many times; before I decided to try the Audiobook. I listened to the audio for the first time in 2017 and have re-listened over the years to get ready for each new release. As many of you may know, if you follow me, this is one of my all time favorite series. Mercy Rocks!
We are treated to Action, Adventure, Suspense, Mystery, Magic, Supernaturals of all kinds, and so much more. The author does a splendid job introducing us to a verity of characters and supernaturals in the Tri-City area. Adam is the Alpha of the Columbia Basin werewolf pack, Mercy our heroine is a coyote shifter, Stefan the vampire, and many others. There are no shortages of interesting and unique secondary characters to enjoy.
Mercy is one of my all time favorite heroine’s. She makes my top three list of kick-ass women. She’s a tough cookie that understands the werewolves behavior’s, (since she was raised by one), and knows how to deal with their moods. She’s got brains and can think for herself as well as she listens to her instincts. She’s got bit and doesn’t need to undergo any training to be capable; because she’s already a strong capable women, but she also has some vulnerabilities too. I love that both sides mesh.
Adam Hauptman – Man he’s hot and sexy. He’s a strong Alpha leader. You can see his strengths and weaknesses. He does get his ass handed to him a few times in this novel, but he weathers it well. He doesn’t put anyone down and works with those around him. He promises to be a perfect love interest for Mercy and a strong Pack leader. I adore his relationship with his daughter, Jesse.
Jesse, Adam’s daughter. I love kids in my novels. Especially when they are written to improve the story and characters. Her relationship with her father is wonderful. I also like her relationship with Mercy too. You can see she will play a part in getting her father and Mercy together.
Sam aka Dr. Samuel Cornick – His introduction was done well and the past he has with Mercy, well you see that it changed her life. Will she go back to Sam or move forward. Only time will tell, but I can say that Sam is another interesting character and promises fun things.
Stefan – The vampire. He’s got a unique relationship with Mercy. You wonder if they can be friends or not for vampires kill Walkers. He’s got this good/bad vibe to him. You can see he’s different from the other vampires we meet, but is he different enough.
Briggs is an amazing world builder. The author does an outstanding job introducing all the characters and building the world. The story is fasted-paced. We are kept on our tows trying to find all the players and figure out what’s going on while hopping everyone is safe.
Narration: Lorelei King is one of my favorite narrators. She does an outstanding job with all the characters and building the story. The voices are perfect for all he characters introduced. I can’t recommend the audio enough.
Moon Called is one of the best Urban Fantasy’s out there. I can’t recommend the Mercy Thompson series enough. It’s got so much to love.
Rated: 4 Stars
If you haven’t read Patricia Briggs’ Mercy Thompson series, you need to dive in right now… I love this world of shifters, and fae, and Native American mysticism all blended into an amazing story!
I love this book. Patricia Briggs is awesome at creating these worlds and laying down the rules as you go along so that the book isn’t all information bogging you down. I love the Mercy Thompson series and recently have started rereading them again with the most recent released book. I’m very excited to read this series again.
This is the first book in another great urban fantasy series. Mercy Thompson is my second favorite kickass heroine (after Jane Yellowrock). Mercy, a coyote shapeshifter who was raised by werewolves, is currently living without a pack, and running her own car mechanic shop. Although she lives next door to the local alpha, she avoids the wolves until the day a teenager walks into her shop looking for a job. She hires him, hesitantly, because she can tell he’s some kind of werewolf and he’s not part of the local pack. All too soon, what seems like a werewolf war breaks out, a dead body is left on Mercy’s front porch as a warning, the local vampire seethe gets involved, and all fingers are pointing to the new kid in town. Mercy is very likeable, tough and smart but, in a realistic touch, weaker than werewolves as a coyote would be. The story is tight and well-plotted, with good twists, and I like the fact that sex and romance is kept to a minimum in favor of focusing on characters and story.
Currently on sale (October 19th, 2019) and if you haven’t read this fantastic example of the genre, then I highly recommend you take advantage of the bargain price for an excellent read!
Review:
I will admit, that I had been putting off reading Mercy Thompson as it appeared to be a predominantly werewolf story and I have never been entirely a werewolf fan. More of a vampire groupie, me. But I am so glad I finally got off my chuff and gave Patricia Brigg’s top-rated series a go, because it was excellent!
From the first few sentences, I knew this would be an easy read. Not easy as in uncomplicated and no challenge, but easy as in comfortable and completely agreeable. It just rolled along at a lovely pace, with great characters and a hint of romance to keep you going.
Mercy is tough and capable, but the author was not afraid to show her more delicate side. I liked her immediately, she had a great sense of right and wrong and courage when it counted. More courage than sense sometimes, but because of that very likeable.
Adam, the Alpha of the local pack is definitely a potential male protagonist to rival the best of them, and I have read a few series with delectable male leads before, so that is saying something.
The storyline was acceptable, not too in-depth, but fairly well thought out, but the real seller for me was by the end of the first book I had become a staunch werewolf fan. No other author can lay claim to making me switch sides.
I am now a definite Team Werewolf girl. At least until the next great vampire series is released.
I absolutely love the mercy Thompson series I hope it never ends if you have not read this series you are missing out and you should rectify that AS SOON AS POSSIBLE
Mercy Thompson can shape shift into a coyote at will. She lives in a world just like ours with the addition of vampires, werewolves and other supernatural beings. MOON CALLED is the first book in a series of, I think, 5 books. I’m stuck at home with a fever and surprised by how much I’m enjoying this book. Yay for having adventures in an imaginary northwest!
Moon Called is the first of the Mercy Thompson series. Mercy and the other characters Patricia Briggs are so real you expect to meet them the Tri-Cities of Washington State. I was surprised to find that Mercy’s garage where my old mechanic’s garage was! Maybe Mercy worked for him?
Werewolves, shape shifters, vampires and fairies fill her pages. What fun!
I wrote Patricia Briggs once to tell her how great her research is in her writing. She once mentioned a Hurdy-gurdy (musical instrument) in one book and she got the information right. She wrote back describing how she met a couple of musician who played one at a Ren Faire in Richland Washington. It was my friend and me! It is such a small world.
I highly recommend Moon Called and all the rest of the books in the Mercy Thompson series.
Re-reading this urban fantasy classic for the third or fourth time via audiobook and really enjoying it!!
Mercy Thompson is another kick ass heroine in my list of favorite bad ass heroines. Moon Called is the first book in the Mercy Thompson series, and introduces us to Mercy, Adam and his pack and other friends of Mercy.
I this book,we have a new villian who is trying to supposedly cure werewolves. But all the experiments are proving to be deadly for the werewolves who are forced to be part of the experiments. With Adam and his daughter, Jesse’s life in danger, it’s up to Mercy to save the day.
Mercy is a strong character, who knows who she is and what she wants. This book is more action oriented rather than romance oriented. And anyone who likes strong characters, with a good storyline but a little less romance will enjoy this book.
I am an urban-fantasy devourer of books and Patricia Briggs ‘Mercedes Thompson’ series is my favorite! Mercy is a strong and lovable character surrounded by a cast that make me want to move in with her. My heart swoons for every werewolf, vampire, or fae that pops into the story.
This book sets up a world that I look forward to rejoining with each new release. The characters are consistent, dimensional, and filled with moments that make me cheer, yell, and cry with them.
Love this series!
With Moon Called, Patricia Briggs pulls us into the world of werewolves, vampires, magic and much more.
But she does it with great poise by showing us a first-personer that has amazing characters throughout.
The Mercedes Thomson series has been one of my go-to series since I was first hooked years ago. Read this book and you’ll read the rest.
if you love shape shifter paranormal romance, Patricia Brigg’s Mercy Thompson series is not to be missed!
Mercy’s strength, humor, and wisdom make this series a comfort read that I can return to again and again: I LOVE Briggs’ characters!
Couldn’t get enough of this whole series.
This is the first book in the Mercy Thompson series. Fantastic. If you think you don’t like paranormal or fantasy read this book FIRST!
Patricia Briggs has created characters you will fall in love with. You won’t be able to stop yourself. Shapeshifter Mercy Thompson is strong and principled with a huge compassionate heart. She can’t help but assist those in need. Bran, Sam, Adam, Ben and Darryl are a few werewolves that make life interesting. And let’s not forget Stephan – the coolest vampire on the planet!
Such a good story. Give it a chance. You won’t be disappointed. And I bet you read this book more than once!
Mercedes Thompson, VW Mechanic, Coyote shapeshifter, and Trouble Magnet. The alternate history of a Masquerade beginning to unfold in the 80s while some Creatures of the Night still wait in shadows is an interesting take on how forensics and the idea of a hidden paranormal world could come into conflict, creating a rich setting. Her main character is interesting, especially in the way her mortality is compared to many of the paranormal creatures she runs with, relying on wits, luck, and a good network of allies to come out on top. The world is fairly rich, with lots of details about how other things in the paranormal world works that are built on or only revealed slowly.
Let me start by saying I am royally ticked off. In all the years I have been a reader (and they are a lot more than I care to admit) no one ever told me about Patricia Briggs and this series. Let me repeat that: NO ONE! What’s up with that? If it weren’t for one of my readers kind of comparing my last book and my style of writing with Briggs I would have never decided to read this book and would totally miss out on Mercy. I think I need new friends, lol.
Needless to say I loved it. Big time. I have another favorite to add to my ever-growing pile of favorites and I’m heading to Amazon to buy the second in the series. Loved Mercy and how tough and yet vulnerable she is. She’s kickass without being kickass if that makes any sense. I was annoyed along with Mercy with the macho crap coming from the wolves, but she somehow managed to make them likable. Dang, I even liked the vampire… Multifaceted, well-developed characters and a mystery that kept unfolding one layer at a time (love that). Okay, I’ll stop here. LOVED IT!
I’ve meant to read the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs for a while, and now I can say I’ve at least read the first book. I’m going to have to make time to catch up on this series now because I had a hard time putting down the first book.
Instead of my regular reviews that I type, I’m going to list everything I loved about this book without spoiling it:
1.) Mercedes ‘Mercy’ Thompson. She’s a kick-butt female character who is a mechanic. She’s also a skin-walker who shifts to a coyote. She’s not afraid to get things done, even though everyone else tells her to hold back. Wolf shifters raised her, and they are very protective of her. One of them she had a close relationship to, and he’s back in her life trying to win her over. Even though she has to deal with another wolf shifter that may like her too.
2.) The worldbuilding and storyline. I love how the first book builds the world of Mercy and all the other paranormal creatures. Werewolves, Vampires, Witches, etc. Mercy is about to be apart of some trouble with those paranormal creatures, which makes it addicting. The Alpha Wolf and his daughter end up in trouble, and Mercy is there to help him.
3.) The secondary characters who happen to be several paranormal creatures. I adored Adam, Samuel, Jessie, Stefan, Warren, etc. There are so many to name, and I can’t wait to read more about them in the next books.
4.) I listened to the book and found out the narrator was Lorelei King. I adore Lorelei King when it comes to narrating books. Between her and Robert Petkoff, I could listen to these two narrate books forever.
5.) The ending and how everything came together. I also loved how Patricia Briggs left me wanting more after reading the first book. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. This book was full of suspense, drama, and action. I loved it!
If you are a fan of Urban Fantasy that has a kick-butt heroine in it than this book is for you.
