The Eisner-nominated MONSTRESS is back! Maika, Kippa, and Ren journey to Thyria in search of answers to her past…and discover a terrible new threat. Collects MONSTRESS #7-12.
Another breathtakingly beautiful volume. This world is immense and it keeps getting bigger and more intriguing. Great worldbuilding and history. This one follows the MC on a much more personal journey than the first that will resonate with any girl who has lost her mother.

Wow! I thought the first volume was fantastic, but volume 2 takes this story to a whole different level! The world building continues to be absolutely brilliant, and the characters continue to be some of my favs in any story. Their dynamics are just so great together, and I just can’t stop rooting for them.

I finished the second volume last night and I ADORED it very much. Of course I gave it a full 5 star read!!!!!
The artwork is as beautiful as ever and I think it improved even more in my opinion. The details of the new city we go with our main character is so intricate and detailed and you just want to keep staring at it. There was also a lot more gore in this volume than the first one and I (creepingly) loved it.
I love the mixture of genres that this graphic novel keeps bringing because it’s very unique. The mixture of genres in my opinion are:
1)Epic/High fantasy
2)Steampunk
3)Horror
And it had been done very perfectly.
The plot became more interesting as we go through our journey with our main character Maika and discovering many secrets (cheesy I know but it’s awesome), but it’s better to go into this series without knowing anything at all because that would make the reading experience even richer.
Finally I just want to gush about a certain character. I adore Kippa so much. She is such a CUTIE, and I want to see her adapted into television (if a tv show will ever happen which I would definitely watch).
Overall, I loved this volume even more than the first and I’m excited to continue on with the journey!!!!!!

The subtitle for this collection is one point. There is so much blood in this, yet somehow, it’s still beautiful. I can’t give this illustrator enough credit. The story is good on its own, but the images catapult it to another level.
This installment, covering issues 7-17, really brings out the darkness of Dark Fantasy. This book brings the whole series, I assume, into the realm of smart horror. This isn’t just a scary or frightening tale, it’s a complex epic of historical and magical themes to serve as a cautionary against ride and hubris, vengeance and revenge, and the pursuit of truth and or power.
I like Maiko more in this one, though she’s not my favorite character. I feel for her more in this one than in the first, as we get to see more of her past and understand why she is who she is. Even the monster inside her seems more relatable, whether likable or not. The little half fox and necromancer cat fill in the remaining gaps of my heart and keep me invested in the darkest moments. They are, for me, critical to the overall appeal of the story.
The end of this install, for me, was a bit of a cliffhanger, but that is to be expected in this ongoing saga. I can only imagine what the coming volumes will reveal about Moriko, the mother who’s still a mystery despite the revelation of her sinister motives in Maika’s birth.
This is where I’ll stop for fear of giving away spoilers. This is an excellent follow-up to the first in the series and I look forward to more.

Highly recommended to mature dark fantasy fans.
