Roxy becomes entangled in another murder as she puts her sleuthing skills to work in order to prove that Louise Carlton didn’t kill Fred Hill over a pet adoption gone wrong. After all, if Louise goes to jail, who is going to find all the animals at Pet Palace a home.
Book two in the Killer Coffee series. These are just the cutest books I have to say. Having the whole boardwalk idea on a lake in a small town in Kentucky is just brilliant. Having the coffee shop right in the middle is just pure genius as I swear it helps Roxy when she investigates because she is always in the middle of everything whether she is at work or not. This time she stumbles across a friend of her standing above the dead body of local farmer. the two had been fighting over an expensive chicken her adopted from her shelter which did not help with her prime suspect status. Roxy stumbles across all sort of clues and little tidbits as she moves across town. The blend of the characters, the setting, and the mystery itself just combine to create a really nice cozy mystery novel that I found highly enjoyable. I can also say that I was happy that Roxy is prolonging the wedding date in order to give them some time. I like that after how quick she said yes after moving back to town. if you enjoy cozy mystery novels where the main character runs a shop (she also bakes a lot I must say it makes me hungry) then you really have to give this series a try. I really enjoyed it so I give it 4/5 stars.
Roxy and Pepper are back at it again! I loved #2 in the series as much as #1. Coffee, a fancy chicken and murder are on the menu for #2. I loved the development of the series in this book. We are learning more about Roxy, her mom and Patrick. Great read that will keep you guessing until the end!
Another fun book in the Killer Coffee series. Great to see the characters develop more, and the town become more like home.
Roxy is at it again when her recently widowed friend is accused of murder. Can she keep the widow out of jail and save the apple orchard from being taken out from under her?
I love Mocha and Murder! This book is interesting and fun. The mystery has so many twists and turns to keep you guessing right until the end. I love the characters and the small town setting. This book is a wonderful book to read.
I adore how Tonya can take a group of characters and bring them together to form a community. The sassy banter has me laughing out loud while the need to find out who committed the crime has me tearing through the pages! A series you must add to your to-be-read list!!
I enjoy the character of Roxie and many of the others. The boardwalk setting in the small town of Honey Springs is well described. There is a visitor’s map included though in case you need it. I love that pet adoption is part of the story and the series. As a rescue dog owner, I am aware of how often these pets are the rescuers. I’m also aware of how many don’t find a forever home. I’m grateful for the author bringing awareness to this issue. In this book a chicken from the pet palace plays a part in the mystery. Yes, a chicken! I love it. You can find all kinds of animals at my local shelter. It’s good to know it’s a thing in other shelters, too. When the owner of Pet Palace finds a body, and is implicated in the murder, the future of the shelter is in jeopardy. Roxie does not believe her friend did it. And the shelter cannot be in danger of closing! Those animals deserve a good place to stay until they find their family. Roxie decides to investigate but then her Mama shows up and brings her own complications. Will Roxie be able to save the shelter or will her Mama distract her?
I highly recommend this book. As far as the mystery goes, you can read this book as a stand-alone. The greatest pleasure, though, will be gotten by reading it in order. You will understand the relationships between the residents so much better. The books are very entertaining and easy to read. Once you start a book you will devour it. So it won’t take long to catch up.
Love the setting and the characters. Fun mystery. Had me guessing almost to the end. Can’t wait for more of this series. I enjoyed it on a 2nd reading even more. I love how supportive Patrick is and how everyone is always helping Roxy. Even when she’s in over her head, there’s someone to help. Emily is a great addition to The Bee Hive and can’t wait to read more of her story. Love how Mom and Aunt Maxi are working on their relationship.
cozy-mystery, murder, coffee, culinary, family-dynamics, friendship
A nice Southern cozy complete with family squabbling, a stuttering romance, and plenty of gossipy neighbors. The ever absent mom rolls into town around the time that Roxy comes upon a murder scene involving her friend from the all volunteer animal shelter. Things only get crazier, and Roxy finds that she needs to dust off her law degree. The characters certainly are, and I’m not willing to do spoilers, but this is a really good read!
Madeline Mrozek narrates exceptionally well and gives the Southern charm without being syrupy.
A cute story, with a chicken and murder. East, fast read.
Roxy is a busy girl in this installment. She has to make three dozen apple crisps for The Southern Women’s Club by Thursday and it’s Monday. Roxy then stops an arguement between Louise, who runs the Pet Palace pet shelter and Fred Hill, the man who has the apple orchard and the best apples for her apple crisps when she is at the Farmer’s Market. The next day Roxy remembers she didn’t pay for her apples so she goes out to the orchard to pay Fred for the apples and finds Louise standing over his dead body with a bloody knife in her hand! Then to top it off her mother has come to town….a town she never liked when Roxy was a young girl. Plus her mother doesn’t get along with her Aunt. Can Roxy find out who really killed Fred and why? There are plenty of rumors going on to who and why, Roxy needs to sort this all out.Can she do it? Read the book to find out. I received ARC of this book from the author. The review is entirely my own opinion and done voluntarily.
i enjoyed reading the story, if you like mystery and romance and some funny parts you will like the book i was given a copy of the book but this is an honest review
Let us go visit Roxanne (Roxie) Bloom.
Roxie has opened a coffee shop called
the Beanhive on the lakefront boardwalk
in the quaint town of Honey Springs,
Kentucky.
You will meet Pepper, the silver schnauzer
that has adopted Roxie and Sassy, a poodle
that Patrick Cane, Roxie’s fiancé, adopted.
Tank is also a newcomer looking for a home.
Roxie becomes involved in a murder investigation
when she discovers her good friend, Louise
Carlton, standing over the dead body of the apple
supplier the Roxie gets all her apples for baking.
Louise is holding a bloody knife but claims
she found Fred Hill, the orchard owner with
the knife in his back and was trying to get help.
Louise requests Roxie to represent her to prove
her innocence. Louise runs the pet adoption
and animal shelter center. Without Louise, the
center would close down.
Then a robbery is reported by Fred Hill’s wife.
Bertie, the Ayam Cemani Chicken is missing from
it cage in the barn. It was a chicken from the pet
adoption center. It’s a rare breed of chicken as it
is black: plumage, beak, tongue, legs, toe nails,
even its meat, bones, and organs! Is the robbery
connected to Fred’s murder???
During all this excitement happening, Roxie
absentee mother returns into her life. What more
could happen?
Colorful, vivid, lively, well fleshed out characters
with quirks, gossips and flaws that make you want
to be a part of the town.
This read was filled with plenty of mystery, twists
and turns, vivid descriptions, adventure and romance.
The story keeps an invigorating pace from start to the
conclusion.
I highly recommend this book.
I volunteered to read Mocha and Murder. Thanks to
the author for the opportunity. My opinion is my own. (less)
Mocha and Murder by Tonya Kappes was the best afternoon escape that I have had in a long time. I hadn’t read the first book in the series but I had absolutely no problems enjoying every minute of this story.
Ms. Kappes has built a beautiful small town world with her descriptive writing. I want to visit and eventually move there. All of the characters were fully developed and I loved that readers got to meet Roxy’s mom, Penny, in this book. The mystery was fast paced with plenty of suspects, a few clues and twists that kept me guessing right up to the “surprise” reveal. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. All of the above opinions are my own
Do you love pets, recipes, coffee shops, small southern town charm, and cozy mysteries? If yes, then this is a book for you.
Mocha and Murder is book 2 of A Killer Coffee Mystery Series by Tonya Kappes. This is a great follow up to the first book Scene of the Grind. Ex-lawyer and coffee shop owner Roxy stumbles across another murder in which one of her friends appears to have committed. Roxy is asked to help clear her friend of being a suspect. Can Roxy clear her friend’s name while dealing with a new engagement, her volunteer duties, her family, running her store, and helping animals find their forever homes?
Our main character Roxy is a very busy lady but she will always find time to help out those she cares about–human or animal. I love all the characters with their quirky southern personalities but other than the animals Roxy is my favorite character. I love her passion for her family, love for animals, and desire to solve mysteries. In the first book we see Roxy’s new relationship with Patrick start to move pretty quickly. In Mocha and Murder, Roxy wants to slow things down and really get reacquainted with one another. I am so glad author Tonya Kappes decided slow things down, by doing this she makes Roxy more realistic and level headed. She is smart and is not going to be controlled only by her heart. She will also listen to her brain and make decisions that are going to better for her in the long run.
I would definitely recommend and look forward to the next. This is a great book for cozy mystery lovers, no bad language, no graphic sex or violence. Best if you read in order for backstory on characters but still great as a stand alone mystery. The book contains recipes for humans and pets.
I thoroughly enjoyed this second book in The Killer Coffee Mystery series. I had a hard time putting it down. I enjoyed reading about the people and town of Honey Springs. The story made me chuckle as well as had me wondering who the murderer was. It definitely kept me guessing, and I enjoyed reading more about Roxy and Patrick. Hopefully there will be more in the series. And the recipes at the end sound scrumptious.
“Mocha and Murder” earns 5/5 Exotic Ayam Cemani Eggs!
Once again I am in seventh heaven enjoying the southern community and characters that Tonya Kappes is so talented in creating. “Mocha and Murder” is the second book in the Killer Coffee series with which fans, like me, are thrilled, but newbies need not shy away. There is plenty of back story to make new fans out of them. However, due to a ‘spoiler’ reference, I highly recommend reading the first book, “Scene of the Grind,” to make your experience complete.
This new story is brilliant including a contemporary issues many may have experienced—I knew the IRS calls and threats I received were a scam, but it was very scary, nonetheless, and engaging to see how it played out in the book. With several twists and a great “Oh my!” ending that put Roxy in jeopardy, amateur Sherlocks are given the opportunity to solve the murder mystery on their own. Me? I had a couple of possibilities and one long shot, and the long shot came in. The characters are well developed and entertaining, but also sharing venerability with family revelations and hatchets buried. My favorite is Roxy, who is strong-willed, but not obstinate, and loyal to friends and family that seems to be putting her in harm’s way. The setting of Honey Springs, Kentucky, and the issues with being a new full-time resident and running a popular coffeehouse play delightfully in the background along with exploring the relationship of reunited lovers and a mother/daughter dynamic. Additionally, we can always count on some easy-to-follow recipes straight from The Bean Hive: Velvet Chocolate Chip Cookies, Apple Crisp Cookies (The Bean Hive favorite), Watermelon Pup-sicles (Pepper’s favorite warm day treat!), and Southern Light Pound Cake. From fans we get Vegan Chocolate Cake with Peanut Butter Frosting and Twinkie Cake. You’ve got the book and the treats…now invite the friends!
