So, the idea of a book version of a mixtape intrigued me. Choosing a song and creating a story around it could take an author in so many directions…is the story a literal portrayal of lyrics or is it simply a nod to the title and the vibe of the song? I LOVE how this group of amazingly talented writers put their creative soul into each novella. I hate to gush, but OMG, these stories are all so good!!
To highlight a few–
Without a doubt, I love Nikki Sloane’s unmatched skill with delicious erotic romance. With the lighter feel to Say it First, I was just as captivated by the sexy friends-to-lovers story as I am to her darker tales. As their 10 year high school reunion looms on the horizon, Anna and Jamie reconnect through social media. They both pass on the event, but continue building a long distance friendship over the next year. Anna, a high profile actress and Jamie, a successful Nascar driver, may seem like opposites, but the heat that sparks when they finally meet is everything! Settle in for a sultry ride with this one.
Saffon A Kent gave me a spicy glimpse of two favorite characters all grown up in Guys My Age, a riveting age gap romance. Dean and Fallon first appear in Medicine Man, but there’s no need to read it first. They’re ages apart, but have always shared a special bond. When Fallon suggests a cross-country trip home, Dean is unable to say no, and he’s completely unaware that Fallon has more than a friendly road trip in mind. Wow, just wow! Saffron Kent is fearless.
Leslie McAdam heats up the pages with unrequited m/m love in Think I’m In Love. Randy, Shane and Kim have been friends forever, but for Randy, friendship is the last thing he wants from Shane.
Being in love with his best friend is tough…especially when he thinks Shane feels the same way too. But get ready, Shane has a surprise for them all… This story has ALL THE FEELS. Ms McAdam writes real life heartache like no one else can!
Sierra Simone’s intense and erotic Broken Hallelujah nearly broke ME! She has a rare talent for creating scenes that literally pull a reader into the story. This novella is raw, gritty, and emotionally charged. So much so that my heart ached with the intensity. Jacey and Devon are broken…broken from war, broken from the life they each chose. Their story, with its tumultuous turns, is in a class by itself. In a word, incredible!
This is a 5+ star book, packed from cover to cover with a wide range of tropes. There’s something for everyone, and if you’re like me, you’ll love them all. Each one is unique. Every one is a must read!
What a great collection. Don’t miss this!
I rarely finish anthologies. I read the authors I’m interested in and then something new and shiny comes along and I lose interest in reading the rest.
But I’m feeling pretty smug because I read every single story and I thought it was outstanding.
Guys My Age by Saffron Kent – This is a spin off from Medicine Man. Fallon is the daughter of Willow and Simon. She asked Dean to marry her when she was 3 and he was 17. She’s loved him ever since.
Say if First by Nikki Sloane – I’ve read Nikki before but not for a long time. Anna the sexy actor takes on a role in a hot film that requires her to get nakid! It’s a film of a book by Nikki and gulp I can only imagine the scenes. Jamie Campbell was in her year at school but they didn’t really connect. After messaging each other on Facebook their friendship develops. I loved this one!
Broken Hallelujah by Sierra Simone – No one can write sexiness as well as Sierra. This one is a bit of change from her usual naughtiness as it’s F/F. I was hooked on the story of Jacey and Devon.
Say Yes by Elle Kennedy – I’m not sure if I have read any Elle Kennedy books before but I definitely need to look her up. I loved this one too. Emilia is looking for a hook up the night before her friend’s wedding. Hook up app to the rescue and along comes Dirk who happens to be in the same hotel (it is a really, really small village). One night of passion followed by some hilarity and I loved this one too.
All I Want by Mara White – This one might be my favourite. Marilyn loves Ove but he can’t give her want she wants most in the whole wide world so she looks for it elsewhere. Ahhhhhh it was sexy and really, really sweet.
Toothpaste Kiss by Xio Axelrod – Friend request sent! I’m a sucker for well written M/M. Lawyer Malcolm Zaha is starting over. His relationship has ended and he’s having to start a new business and furnish it. Artist Pell Lindt is also at a turning point in his life. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if they got together????? Hell yes! Another 5 star short story for me.
Wild Pitch by Rebecca Shea – Childhood sweethearts, torn apart and then re-united.
Your Everything by KL Kreig – How did I not know that this little bit of treasure was buried in here? OMG! As I’m reading it and I read Maverick and Killian and Kael and Small Fry I might have started to hyperventilate. A prequel to Black Swan Affair which was one of my top reads of 2017. Melting. Melting. Melting. DAMN! Now I’m doubting which my favourite brother is.
Think I’m In Love by Leslie McAdam – Another spin off from a well loved book, Sombra. It’s the story of Kim’s best friends, Shane and Randy. Shane who was Kim’s boyfriend before her trip to Spain and Randy who was their bestie. Leslie did M/M and it was great stuff. The angst!
Moment of Truth by Veronica Larsen – Dean and Gabby were best friends but they are so far in the friend zone that he forces her into the arms of another man. Disaster! Come on Dean get your head out of your arse!
Lush by Marni Mann – Pepper runs a sex club. Bane was a member there but disappeared on her. He’s back for one night only. It was my least favourite story but was well written, just not my cup of tea.
Kiss Me by Lynda Archer – An author I’ve not heard of before. It’s sort of an office romance between Daniel (the boss) and Tara.
Overall it was one of the best anthologies I’ve read. Even Laurelin Paige’s introduction made me cry. My song would be Baby I Love You by The Ramones because first dance and all that!
I skipped a huge TBR list to get right to this one and it was the best decision ever!
I’m currently obsessed with this anthology! All of these stories are must reads!
I love anthologies. Its a great chance to read new authors, get a feel for their style of writing and this one is a great introduction. Add in some amazing songs each novella inspires from and this is the perfect anthology for me.
Guys My Age by Saffron Kent – Song – Guys My Age (Hey Violet)
This was a sweet novella. Hot older man Dean. Fallon has been in love with him since she was 3 and asked him to marry her when he was 17. After talking him in to talking a 5 day road trip back home for Christmas she just needs to tell him her feelings an convince him to give them a chance. A sweet, erotic novella.
Say It First by Nikki Sloane -Song – Say It First (Sam First)
Another new author for me and I really enjoyed this one. Again would love to have read from Jamie and Anna. Love a friends-lovers romance. Jamie and Anna had gone to school together but hadn’t seen each other in 10 years. When a friendship turns into more its seriously hot.
Broken Halleluja by Sierra Simone – Song – Hallelujah (Jeff Buckley)
this song always makes me cry! I have to be honest I wasn’t a fan of this novella and that was a shock as I love Sierra and her writing. I’m not sure what it was but something didn’t click with me. Maybe if I had read this as a full length story I would have enjoyed it more.
Say Yes by Elle Kennedy – Song – Always on My Mind (Willie Nelson)
Loved this novella. It was such a sexy, light hearted read. With the modern way of hooking up this was so on point. Steamy night of sexy and red hot chemistry, no way this could be for one night only.
All I Want by Mara White – Song – All I Want to Do is Make Love to You (Heart)
I have to admit this wasn’t my favourite story out of the anthology but I did like Mara’s style of writing. This is about a May-December romance with Marilyn and Ove. Unfortunately Marylin is filled with an all-consuming need to be a mother, to the point where she goes out to pick men up to try to seduce them and get pregnant. One rainy night she meets Derek and after a night of red hot passion she gets her wish.
I probably would have liked this more if it was a full length story instead of a novella. I feel like too much was cramped into the short story.
Toothpaste Kisses by Xio Axelrod – Song – Toothpaste Kisses (Maccabees)
not read anything from Xio before and I really enjoyed this one and her style. This was a nice hot M/M romance. For a short story it packed a hot punch.
Wild Pitch by Rebecca Shea – Song – Thinking Out Loud (Ed Sheeran)
Another favourite genre of mine, Brothers-best-friend, forbidden romance. What better person to be stuck in a snowed in cabin then your first love. What else do you need to do when you have no electricity but rekindle to romance in front of a fireplace….swoon.
Your Everything by KL Kreig – Song – I Just Want to be Your Everything (Andy Gibb)
Having read the Black Swan Affair I was extremely happy to read this prequel. It was full of passion, chemistry and angst. It was loved catching up with this hot couple again.
Think I’m In Love by Leslie McAdam -song- Think Im in Love (Beck)
Being in love with your best friend is one of my favourite guilty pleasure genres and this was a great novella. Having read Sombra from Leslie it was nice seeing what happened before Kim left for Spain. What happened with her best friend Randy and her best friend/fiance Shane. I could honestly read a full length novel of Shane and Randy’s story.
Moment of Truth by Veronica Larsen – Song – Say You Won’t Let Go (James Arthur)
Real test of love is when you put that person first. When you step back and allow her to marry someone else as you put her and her happiness above yourself. New author for me I really want to read more from her.
Lush by Marni Mann – Song – S & M (Rihanna)
Another new author for me. This was quite a hot and sexy read. Completely peaked my interest in this. Really wanted to read more of this. This novella was too short.
Kiss ME by Linda Aicher – Song – Kiss ME (Ed Sheeran)
I haven’t read anything from Linda so it was a great introduction to her.
What do you do when you have been made redundant? go out for a drink with your friends. You certainly don’t expect to bump into your ex-Boss and then end up back at his place. I really enjoyed this from Daniel’s POV. He has been in love with Tara for a while and now there is nothing stopping him making his move.
As someone who is constantly listening to music and/or singing, I loved the idea of short stories inspired by songs. This anthology was a hot, steamy page-turner and each story brought variety and uniqueness. From forbidden age gap, to m/m and f/f, Mixtape is a wonderful opportunity to read outside of your comfort zone or usual trope, without committing to a full novel of a certain genre. Some of the stories inspired me to read more of the genre, while some encouraged me to read more of that author.
I especially liked Saffron A Kent’s “Guys my Age”, as slightly forbidden stories are my jam, but the rest were pretty amazing too. A great read!
I’m usually not a fan but I was excited for this Anthology.
1. Who didn’t like mixed tapes growing up?!?
2. How can you not what to read with so much talent in one place?
Once I started I couldn’t put it down. Some of these authors are favorites of mine and some are new to me. But I am happy I ready the entire book. All the stories were pretty good.
Guys My Age by Saffron A. Kent – 5 stars
No one does age gap reads quite like Kent does. I was so excited for Dean and Fallon’s story and I was not disappointed. My only complaint is that it was to short. LOL Fallon reminded me so much like her mother. And I loved Dean’s protectiveness over her over the years. This story was filled with angst, and a whole lot of sexual tension. And much love.
Say it First by Nikki Sloane – 4 stars
This is my first read by this author. I really enjoyed Jamie and Anna’s story. I loved how they reconnected and talked before they actually met up. It was a fun quick read.
Broken Hallelujah by Sierra Simone – 4 stars
I’m a huge fan of Sierra Simone’s. This story was a little different then what she normally writes due to the fact it was a FF read. Simone broke my cherry. I enjoyed the storyline but I’m not sure that I’m a fan of the whole FF thing. This was story of betrayal and forgiveness.
Say Yes by Elle Kennedy – 5 stars
This was my first read by this author and I really enjoyed it. It was fun and flirty. Had me laughing out loud. The chemistry between the characters was pretty steamy. I will definitely check out other books by this author.
All I Want by Mara White – 3.5 stars
I had mixed feelings about this story. I understand wanting a child so badly you will do anything to have one. But this was going a little to far. Yeah I know. It’s fiction. I did however like the authors writing and parts of the story.
Toothpaste Kisses by Xio Axelrod – 3.5
This was my first read by this author. I have a hard time reading stories told in third person. I’m a little spoiled. I like when books are written in the POV of the main characters. But I was able to read through. It was a good read about starting over and new beginnings.
Wild Pitch by Rebecca Shea – 5 stars
This was such a great read. I love Shea’s writing. Mateo and Mia have loved each other for years but life has gotten in the way. And when Mateo walked away from Mia years ago he ruined everything. Now he’s back. But is it to late? This was a sexy read. One that is good to curl up with on a cold winters night. In front of a nice warm fire.
Your Everything by K.L. Kreig – 5 stars
This was such a great read!!!!! Makes me want to go back and read Black Swan Affair. It will have you on the edge of your seat flipping pages. And leave you wanting more if you haven’t read the other books that go with this story.
Think I’m In Love by Leslie McAdam- 5 stars
I absolutely loved this story by Leslie. I was excited to hear we were going to get Shane and Randy’s story. You meet Shane and Randy from another story of McAdam’s called Sombra. This was an emotional read. It’s a story about finding ones self. And being true to who are and the ones you love. It was a beautifully written story.
Moment of Truth by Veronica Larsen – 5 stars
This is my first read by this author and I loved everything about it. I found myself wanting to reach through the pages and knocking some sense into Dean and Gabby at times. LOL I couldn’t put stop flipping the pages with this story.
Lush by Marni Mann – 3.5
This is my first read by this author. I enjoyed the mystery of the story. For me something was missing. I don’t know if was the passion between the characters. But the ending left me wanting more.
Kiss Me by Lynda Aicher – 4 stars
This was my first read by this author. It was a quick sexy read. And sometimes you shouldn’t judge until you know all the facts.
This was such a fun Anthology. Again one of the best ones I’ve read. All of the stories are worth reading.
Review for Saffron Kent’s
Guys My Age
I absolutely loved Dean and Fallon. Definitely a short and sweet little gem.
Review of Leslie McAdam
Think I’m in Love
I enjoyed this short hot story about Randy and Shawn.
Broken Hallalujah by Seirra Simone
For a short story this was really intense. I would love to have more of Jacey and Devon.
5 STAR Review by Jodi for Ruby Red Romance Review
I can’t get over this amazing anthology. I loved getting to read some new to me authors. Music is something that makes me happy. There’s nothing I don’t do that doesn’t involve music. I’m listening right now as a write this review. I love how each of these songs resonated with the story. I loved getting to know these characters. I also loved getting to read stories I hope I get more of.
I can’t tell you which story was my favorite, because quiet honestly, I loved them all. I loved the music, the authors, the writing, and falling in love with new characters. I wish some of the stories were longer. I’m hoping there is follow up for some of this. Please check out this amazing anthology. And you must listen to the play list. You have too.
Title: Mixtape: A Love Song Anthology
Author: Anthology
Rating: 4.5-stars
The Mixtape: A Love Song Anthology is one of my top favorite anthologies to-date. And how cannot it not be with authors like Nikki Sloane, Elle Kennedy, K.L. Krieg, Leslie McAdam, Lynda Aicher, Mara White, Marni Mann, Rebecca Shea, Saffron A. Kent, Sierra Simone, Veronica Larsen and Xio Axelrod. Though most of these authors I have been reading for a while, I found a few new to me authors, like Lynda Aicher, Mara White, Veronica Larsen and Xio Axelrod.
Though I enjoyed every story in this anthology and would say this is a must-read of short stories, some really stood out for me. I loved K.L. Krieg’s Your Everything that was tied to the song “I Just Want To Be Your Everything” by Andy Gibb. This story will be a favorite for all Black Swan Affair readers. I loved having some insight on Killian and his feelings. This was the first story in the anthology I read as soon as it landed on my Kindle.
Broken Hallelujah by Sierra Simone was a great story as well! But I am not surprised, as she is a must-read author for me. I love her writing so much and she did not disappoint! My other top favorites in this anthology were Say it First by Nikko Sloane and Lush by Marni Mann. Wild Pitch by Rebecca Shea and Think I’m in Love by Leslie were great additions. Mixtape: A Love Song Anthology is definitely worth diving in and reading some very amazing authors!
4.5-stars! Loved it! Read and reviewed for Sultry Sirens Book Blog.
Happy reading!
What a fabulous concept and great stories!
“I Think I’m in Love” – Beck
Leslie McAdams made my heart sing with this story of love finally finding it’s way!
I love Randy! He is the kind of happy, optimistic, make you feel good even if he doesn’t, with a joke kind of guy that I wish was in my everyday circle. He loves completely and deeply. He is a treasure. Shane is just about good enough to deserve him. A time will come where he does, but he’s got some catching up to do. I loved this novella and devoured it immediately upon it’s appearing on my e-reader. I read Sombra not too long ago and these guys were fresh on my mind. I’m thrilled to see a glimpse into their love story really taking off. Come on Leslie, give us some more!
GUYS MY AGE by Saffron A Kent – []
Guys My Age is another classic Saffron A Kent forbidden romance and oh my freaking goodness I am over here swooning because ever since devouring Medicine Man last year I have wanted Fallon and Dean’s story. My heart is still on fire and all I can say is that I desperately need more of their story…seriously please tell me this isn’t all we are getting because I believe that their story deserves a full-length novel! I will just say that readers will get the perfect amount of swoon and heat, but they will certainly be left craving more!
SAY IT FIRST by Nikki Sloane – [.5]
Say It First was a super sweet romance that I absolutely adored. Jamie and Anna managed to captivated my heart and I loved every second of this story. I thought that Nikki Sloane did an amazing job developing this story with it being so short. I would definitely read their story again if the author decided to extend on it. The characters chemistry was well developed, which is often difficult with such a short story, but the author did it so effortlessly (or so it seems)!
BROKEN HALLELUJAH by Sierra Simon – []
Surprisingly Broken Hallelujah was my first taste of Sierra Simon’s writing, but I hope to change that soon because WOW this story was really good. I am usually not a huge fan of F/F, but Jacey and Devon’s romance was very well written and I thought the author did an amazing job developing their story. If this was to be extended into a full length novel I might check it out because if the author was able to pack this much into a few short chapters I couldn’t imagine how amazing it would be with more of a storyline!
SAY YES by Elle Kennedy – []
Say Yes by Elle Kennedy was AMAZING and the only complaint I have is that I wanted more! This is one of my all-time favorite authors and I was super excited that she took part in this anthology! This was a fun, sweet, witty and all around sexy story that had me swooning. Emilia and Dirk had this smoking hot connection and I loved their chemistry! Who knew a random hookup could be this entertaining…heck what am I say…this author ALWAYS brings it with her stories!
ALL I WANT by Mara White – [.5]
All I Want is one of my favorites from Mara White and my goodness I was so excited to read her story. Marilyn and Ove’s story left me breathless and emotional all at the same time. My heart ached for them and I kept my fingers crossed they would get what they wanted most in life! This was a sexy and super sweet romance. This was definitely another amazing Mara White original!
TOOTHPASTE KISSES by Xio Axelrod – []
Toothpaste Kiss by Xio Axelrod was INCREDIBLE and it also happens to be my first taste of this author’s writing. Just telling you all that this author might have a new stalker…oops I meant fan! Not many people know this (haha just kidding) but I love M/M so when I discovered that this story was one I couldn’t wait to dive in. Holy freaking moly! Malcolm and Pell’s chemistry was on FIRE and my chest is legit burning up right now! I need more from this author, and SOON!
WILD PITCH by Rebecca Shea – []
Rebecca Shea is the kind of author that never disappoints and Wild Pitch was no exception! This was a sweet and fast-paced second chance romance between Mateo (love this name) and Mia. Oh and did I mention this all happens during a snowstorm…talk about the perfect time to reignite a romance! THIS STORY WAS AH-FREAKING-MAZING and you won’t be disappointed if you give this one a try!
YOUR EVERYTHING by KL Kreig – []
So it turns out that I have never read one of KL Kreig’s books before, but I am happy to say that is no longer the truth. Your Everything was an interesting read and I guess it’s a prequel to Black Swan Affair. After reading this short story I am actually interested in checking it out! I have to say that I really enjoyed the characters and the storytelling was captivating! Great first experience of the author’s writing!
THINK I’M IN LOVE by Leslie McAdam – []
I FREAKING love Leslie McAdam and you all she wrote an extraordinary M/M romance. Think I’m In Love was hands down one of my favorite reads from this anthology, but honestly that really isn’t all that surprising to me because this author ALWAYS manages to captivate me whole body, heart and soul! Her storytelling is so unique and the writing is incredible. I almost forgot I was reading a short story…at least until I suddenly reached the end. Now I am sitting here shouting that I desperately NEED more of Shane and Randy! PLEASE don’t tell me that this is ALL we are getting, although it was REALLY GOOD!
MOMENT OF TRUTH by Veronica Larsen – []
Seems like I found another NEW TO ME author! Moment of Truth features two best friends that seem perfect for each other, and yet they deny their feelings because they don’t want to ruin their friendship. I absolutely love a good friends-to-lovers romance, so let’s just say I was really interested in this one. Gabby and Dean’s chemistry was immediately evident, at least in my opinion, and these two had my heart aching within moments of meeting them! Veronica Larsen’s writing was beautifully developed and the storytelling captivated my attention. After reading this I certainly need to check out more books from this author, and SOON!
LUSH by Marni Mann – []
Although this happens to be my first time reading one of Marni Mann’s books, I do happen to have many of her stories on my TBR list right now. If they are as amazing as this story then I totally need to dive into one of them soon. Lush is one of those stories that will have you blushing and leave you completely breathless both during and after reading the story. Bale and Pepper’s chemistry was SIZZLING HOT…so hot that I thought my kindle was going to burst in flames at any second!
KISS ME by Lynda Aicher – []
Once again this is a NEWBIE author to me and I thought that the story was interesting. Although this wasn’t one of my favorite reads in the anthology, Kiss Me was very well written and I liked the development of the romance between Tara and Daniel. Oh and did I mention that he was her boss before she was sacked…yep you read that right. Make sure to pick this one up to find out what happens between these two!
The cover and the idea and the mix of music for this book are so cool and fun. I read Say it First by Nikki Sloane. First of all, fans of her books will be super excited at what movie the actress plays in. Anna and Jamie went to school together but didn’t start talking until a really random moment years later. It’s pretty sweet seeing them figure out getting past the friend zone, and the sparks fly. I really liked it.
For those of you who have read and loved Sombra by Leslie McAdam’s you are in for a treat. For those of you who haven’t read Sombra…you must!!! Think I’m In Love by Leslie McAdam, is contained in this fantastic anthology by my favorite authors. Leslie writes with such deep emotion that I knew I was going to be in for it with this MM story. Gahhhh! She did not disappoint. I got ALL the feels. Shane and Randy’s story is pure perfection in every way.
**Review for Leslie McAdam’s “Think I’m In Love”**
Leslie McAdam tugs hard at the your heartstrings with her addition to this fabulous anthology inspired by love songs!
This perfectly balanced MM novella has sizzling hot chemistry, tender poignant moments, testosterone fuelled tension, and love affirming commitment whilst capturing beautifully the angst and fear associated with being true to one’s heart.
I loved Randy and Shane and the journey their relationship took in this story, that is the perfect teaser to Kim’s story in Sombra.
Short, but by no means lacking and bursting with sweetness!
Not to be missed in this stellar line up of authors!
Loved the idea of this. Songs that make a story! All. In!! All of these authors are awesome story tellers, and to have them all in one book was just phenomenal! Most definitely a One-click book! Every story was great.
Review of “Think I’m In Love” by Leslie McAdam.
I have not read M/M before this, and I was honestly a bit skeptical as to how I’d feel about it. But. OH. MY. WOW!! SOO good!!
Leslie McAdam grabbed me by the heart and refused to let go. I got ALL the feels. I understand Randy & his heartache, and I felt everything he felt. I want to be his friend. I want to hug him & love him & be friends forever!
Leslie writes such REAL people that it’s hard for me to remember that they are fictional and don’t really exist. But they DO. They are so real & they do exist… if only in the pages of this incredible story.
I HIGHLY recommend this amazing story to anyone & everyone!!
I loved the way the authors Integra the stories to the songs.
