Mount Mellyn stood as proud and magnificent as she had envisioned…But what bout its master–Connan TreMellyn? Was Martha Leigh’s new employer as romantic as his name sounded? As she approached the sprawling mansion towering above the cliffs of Cornwall, an odd chill of apprehension overcame her. TreMellyn’s young daugher, Alvean, proved as spoiled and difficult as the three governesses before … governesses before Martha had discovered. But it was the girl’s father whose cool, arrogant demeanor unleashed unfimiliar sensations and turmoil–even as whispers of past tragedy and present danger begin to insinuate themselves into Martha’s life.
Powerless against her growing desire for the enigmatic Connan, she is drawn deeper into family secrets–as passion overpowers reason, sending her head and heart spinning. But though evil lurks in the shadows, so does love–and the freedom to find a golden promise forever…

Fantastic story as always
Great Gothic Romance
I like Victoria Holt. She wrote excellent stories as is this one. It has some mystery, romance and some darkness but all in good portion.
A sentimental favorite, “The. Mistress of Mellyn” was the first gothic romance I read and it was as captivating to re-read today as it was those many years ago.
This book was boring and repetitive. I think it could have been 100 pages shorter if the main character didn’t keep having the same thoughts / conversations over and over. Also, there was no character development. We’re supposed to believe two people fall in love after talking to each other maybe 6 times for 5 minutes? Ummm, no. I think the author …
I was a huge fan of Ms. Holts when this book came out. I have read most of her
books and they never disappoint.
I read this book the first time when I was a young girl. It really is the start of my love for reading. I’ve read all of Victoria Holts books and wish there were more authors like her. This is her best and I got my young daughter interested by giving her this book when she was young. Now she loves reading also. Her favorite was Kirkland …
It was the first Victoria Holt book I ever read and started me on a life long love of Holt’s novels, and gothic novels in general. It’s a page turner, and an unforgettable story.
Suspenseful
One of the first romances I ever read.
I had read this book years ago and had looked for it for years to read again. It is one of a few books I would reread again.
This was the first Holt book I ever read; I’m so thrilled to add it to my “Nook” library now. An excellent gothic mystery with romance thrown in.
One of my favorite books. I read it as a 10-year-old and still love reading it again.
This not a ‘new’ book. I read most of Victoria Holt’s books well over 40-50 years ago. These are going ‘G’ rates romances.
Another good Victoria Holt novel.
Another great book by Victoria Holt. A governess, a moody father, a creepy castle, and an unsolved mystery. She kept me guessing all the way to the end. Definitely put this one on your list to read.
A well written account of the patient relationship between the governess and pupil ,…the gradual overcoming of predudice in their relationship and the evolving relationship with her employer ….a really enjoyable read
I love all of Victoria Holt books, I actually own this book in print among others.
It just didn’t do it for me. I felt that the relationship to the H and h needed more build. It was hard to believe he really wanted her. The big reveal at the end was different, but hard to believe they would go to such lengths for what they wanted. It was otherwise nicely written.
I read this when I was in high school so I don’t remember much about it but that it was a really good book.
