Mount Mellyn stood as proud and magnificent as she had envisioned…But what bout its master–Connan TreMellyn? Was Martha Leigh’s new employer as romantic as his name sounded? As she approached the sprawling mansion towering above the cliffs of Cornwall, an odd chill of apprehension overcame her. TreMellyn’s young daugher, Alvean, proved as spoiled and difficult as the three governesses before … governesses before Martha had discovered. But it was the girl’s father whose cool, arrogant demeanor unleashed unfimiliar sensations and turmoil–even as whispers of past tragedy and present danger begin to insinuate themselves into Martha’s life.
Powerless against her growing desire for the enigmatic Connan, she is drawn deeper into family secrets–as passion overpowers reason, sending her head and heart spinning. But though evil lurks in the shadows, so does love–and the freedom to find a golden promise forever…

An author that I dearly loved in my 20’s. This is a re-read for me. Absolutely adored the creepy twist in this book along with the epilogue.
I love Victoria Holt’s writing. The mystery, along with the romantic setting and characters, make her one of my favorite authors.
classic gothic romance. :-}
My Dad died when I was in the 4th grade. By 6th grade I would not read an assigned book for a book report. My 6th Grade teacher, the wonderful Mrs. Fink, encouraged me to bring in any book from home and she would see if it was ‘appropriate’. I read the book and turned in my report. I was hooked to reading then. That summer to the 7th grade, I …
If I had read this book when I was younger, I’m sure I would have enjoyed it more, but I found it to be a rather run-of-the-mill gothic romance. I’m wondering why all the old novels were about ominous widowers living in old victorian mansions on clifts next to the sea. The characters were well developed and interesting, like Mrs. Polgrey, who …
Good gothic classic. It took me a while to take to the heroine, because she seemed so quick to judge, but she wasn’t took thrilled to become a governess and was just a little prideful. It took her a while to realize her attraction to Conan TreMellyn, which by the timeshe did, I wanted to slap my forehead. But it is worth reading if you are a fan …
One of my earliest forays into gothic and historical romance. I loved it.
I recently re-read this book – one of my favourites when I was a teenager. I think Victoria Holt’s books got me into writing…. and hooked me on atmospheric, governess-and-creepy-castle romances.
Loved it the first time I read it….about 20 years ago. Still a grand book and a mental retreat
Love these novels as the author is very detailed and descriptive. Outside of the romance part it is just nice lighting reading.
I have read the majority of these books and also read a few of hers under the names Jean Plaidy and Philippa Carr.
one of my first gothic novels; remember it fondly enough to reread it last year
Not a V Holt book to my liking. I read everything she wrote when I was younger but did not enjoy this very twisted, weird story. Didn’t finish.
I read this book when I was much younger, I read it again last month. It was still enjoyable, I have always liked anything by Victoria Holt
It was one of the first historical novels I read and I was hooked!
One of my all time favorites!
