The endgame is at hand for Penn Cage, his family, and the enemies bent on destroying them in this revelatory volume in the epic trilogy set in modern-day Natchez, Mississippi—Greg Iles’s epic tale of love and honor, hatred and revenge that explores how the sins of the past continue to haunt the present.
Shattered by grief and dreaming of vengeance, Penn Cage sees his family and his world collapsing around him. The woman he loves is gone, his principles have been irrevocably compromised, and his father, once a paragon of the community that Penn leads as mayor, is about to be tried for the murder of a former lover. Most terrifying of all, Dr. Cage seems bent on self-destruction. Despite Penn’s experience as a prosecutor in major murder trials, his father has frozen him out of the trial preparations–preferring to risk dying in prison to revealing the truth of the crime to his son.
During forty years practicing medicine, Tom Cage made himself the most respected and beloved physician in Natchez, Mississippi. But this revered Southern figure has secrets known only to himself and a handful of others. Among them, Tom has a second son, the product of an 1960s affair with his devoted African American nurse, Viola Turner. It is Viola who has been murdered, and her bitter son–Penn’s half-brother–who sets in motion the murder case against his father. The resulting investigation exhumes dangerous ghosts from Mississippi’s violent past. In some way that Penn cannot fathom, Viola Turner was a nexus point between his father and the Double Eagles, a savage splinter cell of the KKK. More troubling still, the long-buried secrets shared by Dr. Cage and the former Klansmen may hold the key to the most devastating assassinations of the 1960s. The surviving Double Eagles will stop at nothing to keep their past crimes buried, and with the help of some of the most influential men in the state, they seek to ensure that Dr. Cage either takes the fall for them, or takes his secrets to an early grave.
Unable to trust anyone around him–not even his own mother–Penn joins forces with Serenity Butler, a famous young black author who has come to Natchez to write about his father’s case. Together, Penn and Serenity battle to crack the Double Eagles and discover the secret history of the Cage family and the South itself, a desperate move that risks the only thing they have left to gamble: their lives.
Mississippi Blood is the enthralling conclusion to a breathtaking trilogy seven years in the making–one that has kept readers on the edge of their seats. With piercing insight, narrative prowess, and a masterful ability to blend history and imagination, Greg Iles illuminates the brutal history of the American South in a highly atmospheric and suspenseful novel that delivers the shocking resolution his fans have eagerly awaited.

I am still haunted by all three books in the trilogy. I specifically traveled to Natchez this year to personally feel the atmosphere – somewhat like a pilgrimage. How many authors can imbue so much emotion?
I was sad to end the Penn Cage series. However, the author did not disappoint. The breathtaking action kept me reading well past my bedtime and I had to sneak in another chapter before leaving for work or my day was not complete! The greatest honor I can say about a writer is that he or she is a magnificent storyteller. And Greg Iles is just that.
It’s a book with a lot of pages, but I promise you won’t get bored…Mr. Liles keep the drama turning with one surprise after the other…highly recommend.
Greg Iles has so many twists and turns in his books. His Penn Cage series is wonderful and each book in the series gets better. I certainly hope he will write another in this series!
I love Greg Iles. I love Penn Cage.
This is a continuation of the Bonetree, but will stand alone. It covers enough of the back story that you aren’t lost.
Penn, the mayor of Natchez, is getting over the murder of his fiancee and his father is being charged with murder or assisted-suicide. Penn has 24 hour guards because the notorious Double Eagle group are still trying to kill him and his family.
Snake Knox, the leader of the Double Eagles, kills anyone willing to testify about the group. And, he really hates Penn and his family, partly because Penn killed his brother, Frank.
Lots of tension, lots of gunfights, lots of shocking facts come out as the book goes on. Some of my ideas about Tom and Peggy page get crushed.
This is a tome of a book, 700 pages, but it doesn’t drag or have a lot of worthless filler. It is a really good book and leaves you wanting to know what happens next to the Cage family.
This was number 3 in the trilogy. Would strongly recommend reading books #1 and #2 first. Actually a necessity. I loved the trilogy. Read the other Penn Cage books also; after the trilogy and not in order.
I’m a big fan of the Penn Cage series. So much so, I actually went to Natchez & took the Greg Iles tour. Mr Iles’ has a talent for drawing you in & the characters become real.
Along with Natchez Burning this is my favorite Isles book so far. lots of characters so I had to go back and refresh my memory on some characters a I read.
Studying literature in college, my favorite author was Faulkner. Comparisons to Greg Iles are not uncommon. There’s so much to this trilogy with how family, loyalty, race relations, prejudice and the old South are all dealt with. Have read all his book-very difficult to put down when started.
Wonderful captivating read. Can’t put down.
I finished this book couple of days of ago. I had to give myself time to get my thoughts on this book. Out of all six books this one is my favorite. The narrator does amazing job. I sometimes felt like I was watching a In the heat of the night episode. I highly recommend these books. I cant believe that it took my so long to read these books. I am so glad that I finally picked these up. Not disappointed at all.
About Book-This is a continue of book five. Where Penn Cage father is going to trial in the murder of someone he used to have affair with. This book in more on the court hearing on Doctor Tom Cage. And the under hidden truth that come out about a lot of people. Highly recommend these books.
Love all of Greg Iles books. I really enjoy reading all the Mississippi history he includes as I am from Mississippi. We love to travel to the places he writes about and figure out the locations!
3rd book of a trilogy..Natchez Burning, The Bone Tree and Mississippi Blood. Some of the best books I’ve ever read.
Great book. I loved it.
Great book, with an accurate picture of the times, and social conflicts of the time. Loved it !!
I love, love, love Greg Iles & will read anything he writes. THE NATCHEZ BURNING trilogy is one of the best I’ve ever read. Penn Cage is an intriguing character.
Greg Iles is now one of my favorite authors. Hard to believe the hard times that happened in Mississippi & the south in general with racial situations. Can’t wait to delve into more of his writings as they’re interesting & unpredictable & somewhat scary. Just my kind of mystery novel.
I was looking at excuses to go in bed and read it. And then I was reading to over midnight
