She dreams of joining the scientific elite. He’s desperate to save his business and his sister. Together, they may hold the turnkey to adventure… inventors. With her brilliant engineer father among those taken, Fiona’s only hope of rescuing him lies with the captivating rail baron who rescued her from the fray.
Devon Meriweather can only keep his train empire on track if he marries into an influential family. And he also needs the connections to make sure his chronically ill sibling can marry well. So no matter how engaging and beautiful the firmly working-class Fiona may be, he knows she’ll only ever be a partner in solving crimes.
As they work closely hunting for clues to the strange aether-powered apparatus and magical mice, the intrepid duo can’t deny their budding feelings. But neither can afford a distracting courtship with the growing threat of the nutcrackers and their deadly chompers.
Can Fiona and Devon expose the menacing mastermind behind the machines and make their passion run like clockwork?

Our heroine is a working class tinkerer, on hero an aristocrat in need to connections. Thrown together to solve the mystery of the nutcrackers, they may make an unexpected connection.
This is book two of this series, but it works just fine as a standalone. There are clearly references to previous events and characters, but none of that detracted from this story.
This is a steampunk story with a holiday twist to it, as well as a few other elements thrown in. The story is well written and easy to read. Both the setting and the characters are well developed with solid backgrounds. I really enjoy a good steampunk story and couple that with a mystery and I am a happy camper. I really enjoyed exploring the setting and getting to know these characters, as well as the supporting cast. And I am definitely looking forward to reading more from this author.
Highly recommended.

This is the 2nd book I’ve read written by Cecilia Dominic; she has done a great job at writing a good book; I can’t wait to read more of her books.
The story line caught my attention at the very beginning and kept me interested throughout the entire book.

This was my first book by this author and I really enjoyed it. I liked all the characters and the story flowed nicely. I loved the surprise of shifter thrown in and what they shifted into was very different. I will be reading more by this author.

Nutcracker is the second entry in Dominic’s Inspector Davidson Mysteries. While this isn’t a genre I would normally read, it IS a good read; and it stands alone well. Dominic builds characters that are endearing, you become invested in them and it was this talent that drew me in with her Lycanthropy series as well.
A good read, I can recommend!

This is an Inspector Davidson mystery and there would appear to have been at least one prior book (The Art of Piracy) involving him. This one is set near Terminus, Georgia in December 1871 and takes about twelve hours to read.

The storyline was well written, the plot flowed smoothly from page to page and the characters were written with such great detail and depth that I was totally engaged throughout the entire book!

Mission: Nutcracker is the second in Cecilia Dominic’s new series of Inspector Davidson Mysteries, although it can be enjoyed on its own. It’s set in the same steampunk world as her Aether Psychics series, and it was a pleasure to be reunited with most of the main characters from that series.
Mission: Nutcracker is a fun combination of mystery, magic, and romance for multiple couples, all with a charming holiday Nutcracker theme. I loved the new characters, and I hope that we will see more of Devon and Fiona, and perhaps Therese and Layla, too. Although the book deals with some challenging issues (racism, sexism, abuse/rape, challenges facing LGBTQ couples), there’s a lot of humor and whimsicality.
The main characters in this story are all flawed but admirable; each has his or her own strengths, weaknesses, and special gifts. Several of the characters get a chance to learn and grow, which I always appreciate. And I love this setting with its mix of magic, mythology, the supernatural, and steampunk inventions. Highly recommended!

While I did not read an Art of Piracy, I did enjoy Mission Nutcracker. It is a steampunk style mystery, with a little bit of romance mixed in.
Not to be tied down in marriage,Fiona find herself in a situation where she must find her father. He was taken at the masquerade.
Devon cannot be sidetracked by Miss Fiona. He needs to marry well. But attraction cannot always be denied.

Mission: Nutcracker is Book 2 in the Inspector Davidson Mysteries by Cecillia Dominic. This is a story that can be read as a standalone. It is well written and the character development is superb. This is a steampunk story that has mystery, magic, mythology, and the supernatural. Our main characters, Fiona and Devon, are wonderful and interesting. Fiona is a tinkerer who wants to be taken seriously. Devon is looking for a marriage that will benefit his career. Their interaction is rather stilted at first as Fiona finds it difficult to have a conversation with Devon unless she is speaking about her tinkering. Cecillia Dominic’s ability to draw the reader into the story and keep them turning pages until the end is phenomenal. There is a deal going on with lots of characters in this beautiful story which I highly recommend. I have not read the first story in this series but am planning to. I am looking forward to the next Inspector Davidson mystery. I received a copy from Booksprout and this is my voluntary review.
