Josie Carmichael’s no rock star. She’s not even famous and she doesn’t particularly like musicians, but when a boy from her childhood reconnects unexpectedly her life is put on hold. With opposing lifestyles and conflicted feelings for the special boy she used to know with the sexy-as-sin man Kane is now will she ever find common ground? Strangers as adults with a strong childhood bonds Josie and … and Kane’s world becomes closer than either of them could ever have fathomed, bringing emotional challenges beyond anything they could ever prepare for or have imagined.

I am a big fan of rockstar romance reads and this book had everything I love about the genre. The was different than other rockstar romances and that just made me enjoy this story that much more. The amount of emotion that was written in this was amazing and really had me hooked from the start. I really liked the characters and the depth there was to these characters as well. It was obvious how much the characters belonged together.
I love this book.
Initially Jo had me all frustrated, but the more I read the more I understood her, and Kane well hot rockstar, with a beautiful soul.
Again KL Shandwick made me cry.
A must read.
Damn! I thought Trusting Gibson destroyed me a little, but this one took it a bit further! Jo and Kane are childhood friends but after he loses his Dad, they drift apart and lose touch. 12 years later and a phone call out of the blue sees the friends back together. But so much has changed, they have changed, feelings have changed. Sweet baby Jesus!! The feels!!
And just when I feel like I can’t take any more, she throws THAT in! Holy crap, I could not turn the pages quick enough to see how this was going to turn out for them, they had been through so much!!
Another great read!!
Have you ever read a book by a new author, with no expectations and been blown out of the park. This was one of those moments for me! Yes this is a rock romance but it is sooo much more! This book has an awesome storyline, you’ll fall in love with the hero and love the heroine as she is one hell of a stubborn fighter.
They met as young kids in Germany where their fathers were stationed. Jo and Kane were best friends, never lied to one another, shared everything and left broken hearted when they returned to America. With distance keeping them apart they stayed in contact by letters. They did see each other when Kane’s father died but wouldn’t see each other for twelve years. Jo was devastated when Kane stopped writing to her. Then out of the blue he pays her a visit, he’s not the same Kane she knew though. He is the singer of a rock band and has the reputation as a playboy. Jo’s boyfriend is away and not happy that her old friend has re-entered her life. He pushes her into Kane’s arms. It it doesn’t take her long to regret her night with sexy, pierced Kane. She chooses the safety of Elliot because she knows what to expect and there are no surprises. Ah…that’s in a perfect world but things never go to plan. I’ve set the scene now you need to read this book to find out their story. I promise you won’t be disappointed.
KL Shandwick has done it again and given us another epic 5 star read. I’m a massive fan of this author and have devoured each and every book she had given us but I have to say Missing Beats is definitely my favourite so far. I love the depth of the characters she gives us and the emotions that go into her writing style. It makes her books a definite page turner and completely hooks you from the beginning.
Kane and Josie were best friend’s from been about 6 years old both were from military families so it was inevitable that the time would come when they were forced apart, but that doesn’t mean they were any the less heartbroken when it happened. They tried to keep in touch but eventually lost contact. Both were forced to get on with their lives, now 12 years later Kane is a famous singer with a rock band and is doing a gig in Jo’s hometown it’s their chance to reconnect but with growing up comes feelings, after all these years will it really be that easy to carry on where they left off?
I love Josie and Kane’s story. It’s full of anguish, indecision, tragedy and love. Most of all, love. It is amazing how love wins between 2 very different lives, but people who have a childhood in common.
This was a great book!! It is heartwarming, heartbreaking, steamy and wonderful!!
After reading Ready For Flynn, I was looking forward to a new book by KL Shandwick. This book certainly didn’t disappoint. I think I would go as far as saying this is the best book I’ve read by this author, so far. I loved Jo and Kane. I will admit I have laughed with Kane’s attitude and words throughout this book, but I have also felt his pain and emotions when the time came.
What I liked about this book is, although it is a rock star romance, it had some twists and turns in there that I never seen coming. That kept me page turning until the last word was read.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that loves romance.
Well done, KL Shandwick! Good luck with the new release.
5 AS LONG AS THIS BEATS IN MY CHEST STARS
Firstly, fan me down, that cover!
I’m a sucker for a second chance romance, a childhood to adulthood love story and a baby daddy but sprinkle on the top a cocky, smooth talking hot Rock-star and I’m a goner.
Jo and Kane had grown up together in Germany on an Army base camp were their dads were stationed, although Kane was friends with Josie’s brothers first the pair became inseparable.
When jobs changed, parents had to move and life moved on, the inseparable duo heartrendingly had to separate with a promise to always stay in touch.
Over 12 years later, Kane had made it big as a rock-star, he had always been that way and Jo supported him with his love of music as a kid. All Jo had from Kane in the years that passed were her memories and a 21st birthday card that arrived in the mail. Jo lived a mundane life working for her dad and her only glimpse of Kane and how he was doing since there separation had been on TV and in magazines with model women and celebrities.
A call out of the blue from Kane saying he had a concert in town and wanted to see her not only shocked Jo but she was angry that he obviously knew how to contact her but chose to now after all this time, she had grieved over his absence in her life and now older in it’s place had anger over the broken promises.
Jo is a stubborn character and she really frustrated me even with all Kane’s sweet talk and his poetic words to get back into her life and heart she didn’t budge, her insecurities, her fear of Jake’s lifestyle was the forefront of her thoughts and there was no winning her over no matter what her heart was saying.
Jo: My heart leapt that the boy i’d loved as a child could love me back, as a man. Right there and then I knew i’d never want him to do anything else.
Kane, well I can only describe him as cocky with a dirty mouth, a womaniser, swoon worthy and determined. Kane is a great character.
“You’ve always been in my heart, Jo. If you cut it up into tiny pieces you’d find Jo Carmichael in almost every one”.
Why now? I could understand Jo’s anger it was like he had sowed his oats, made his mark on the world so to speak and now because he had decided he wanted to seek out his soul mate and finally settle down thinking he could get it as easy as everything else that had come in his current life.
I loved the whole plot, I loved the backstory’s of both characters told in Jo’s pov, I got so frustrated and angry with Jo at times, even though I understood her reservations, her stubborn attitude drove me crazy but the whole plot was bittersweet and contained hot, humorous, heartwarming, heartbreaking and swoon-worthy moments so a little of something for every emotion.
Missing beats didn’t blow me away it isn’t that kind of read but I gave it 5 stars because it did have me reading in one sitting loving every page and eager to get to the end to find out how it would all play out. This is my first book by K.L Shandwick and I intend on reading more of her rock-star romances.
Such a heartbreaking story for a lot of it. I found it sad, but also it had such strength. I did find myself wanting to scream at Josie at times for how she acted towards Kane, he so obviously was bending over backwards to do what she told him she wanted and that still wasn’t right, her confused! well it got me there as well. I felt her heartache from the past and the circumstances through their younger lives but he explained. With everything that came from that point I could see why she made the decisions she did, the focus needed to be where it was for that period of time and her strength was amazing. This book is full of angst but these characters are easy to love despite the hard work they make of it. It is non stop worry, problem after problem getting in the way but then that is what makes K.L’s books so good. Reading with your heart in your mouth and thinking “gosh” what more can possibly happen. I think you tend to always get more invested in a story if a child is involved and this was no exception and it left me needing to take time out to process and digest it all. Really great read I loved it.
Missing Beats is an amazing book full of feels. Jo reacts exactly how someonw in her position would i love this flawed character. Soft but with a tough core. Kane is to die for loved this story.
I liked this book but I have to say Jo really irritated me. I understand how she was feeling & her trying to deal with things, but she really kept me irritated during the book. I found myself not wanting to read anymore bc of her.
You couldn’t blame Kane for some of his actions. Her personality really needed work & don’t even get me started on her friend Candice. I was ready to slap her also with how she was.
I could not really connect with this book or the characters. I felt like we were dealing with teenagers instead of grown people.
My favorite part of the book is the ending with Ellie.
What I like the most about K.L. Shandwick’s rockstar romances is that her stories don’t focus on the character in front of the reflectors and the fans but on the person that remains once the lights are switched off.
Missing Beats is no exception. Kane Exeter is a god rock who leaves a trail of broken hearts everywhere he goes. Everyone wants a piece of him and plays the part. He is loud and a dirty talker, yet he longs for the best friend he grew up with but lost contact with years ago. Now he has a concert in her city and decides it’s time to pay her a visit.
Josie lives in a tiny apartment, works for her father, and has a boyfriend. She is content with her quiet life, at least until her former childhood friend comes knocking on her door. They have never been able to forget each other. Now, they are older, the chemistry is undeniable. Kane is set on proving to her that they can be together, she is ready to question every attempt he makes.
Missing Beats is full of angst, banter, and steam. So much steam. While I really like Kane, and how he finally shows his true non-rockstar persona, I disliked Jo to the point where I would have like to smack some sense into her. She is not my favorite KL Shandwick female character. Yet, in the end, Kane and Jo work as a couple.
2 souls destined to be together, but not without plenty of trials…
Kane was 8 and Josie was 6 when they first met, 2 military children in a foreign land develop a strong friendship and even stronger connection. However, their little bubble soon comes crashing with effects that will stay with both for years to come.
Years later Kane comes knocking on Josie’s door, but too much has happened in both of their lives since. Kane is a famous rock star with his band Hedon1sm, and Josie has met the man she can see a future with. There are too many obstacles in Kane’s way, but, those deep seated feelings are too strong to ignore.
Josie is a mess, she has so many conflicting emotions going around her head, but her heart is on another course. She has a boyfriend, he is kind and safe, Kane is from another world, a place she knows she cannot fit, she hates all the drinking and groupies….
Why is their connection still so strong after all these years?
Why does her body melt at just the sight of that sexy man?
But he deserted her once before, he cut her out of his life so easily, too easily.
She begs him to stay away, the guilt of spending time with him is too much to bare.
Oh boy, Kane and Josie’s story is one that will stay with me for long. Their sexual attraction is so strong, and the walls that Kane has to break down are pretty solid. She keeps pushing him away, yet he keeps coming back for more heartache, the push and pull of these two frustrated me so much.
As for the missing beats, oh wow ….
This book is a trigger for those who have lost a baby or had one in the NICU
This book is absolutely the best read for a book that had me bawling my eyes out, running through tissues and missing dinner cause I knew there was a happy time coming.
These characters fight hard for what they want. She is my hero for standing tall and holding her world together. Absolutely perfectly imperfect
Josie is a single girl who is just trying to make it in life. She has tried to do everything right in the eyes of her parents, but it seems as though no matter what she does, she just can’t quite reach her goals.
Kane is a famous rock star who used to be a military brat. He lost his parents when he was really young, and that changed him forever, but the one thing that he never lost was his feelings for the little girl that stole his heart when they were children.
It has been 12 years since they have seen or heard from each other. Kane has decided that too much time has gone by, but is it too late to attempt to find if they could actually have something together? Only time will tell.
This was not the rock star story I expected at all- in a good way! There were several twists that changed things significantly. I loved Jo and Kane- flawed, real, having insecurities, and so much more. Missing beats is more than a music reference and was done brilliantly.
I was captivated from page one to the end
I have wanted to read Missing Beats for such a long time and I am now kicking myself for not doing so sooner! This second chance romance will have you reaching for the tissues of that I’m certain. Having read many of Ms. Shandwick’s stories previously, I know this author has a tendency to put her characters through the wringer. There are some emotional scenes in this story, one or two mirrored my own personal experiences which of course brought back a multitude of memories and emotions.
You are going to love Kane Exeter, he is everything you’d expect a rock star to be – especially in public. However, away from the spotlight I saw a different side to him that I absolutely fell in love with.
Josie Carmichael may have a special bond with Kane but her life now couldn’t be more different to his, which causes them some problems. For such a young lady, she goes through so much in this story and I understood the reasons for her actions. I thought she was so strong choosing to protect those that she loves over having their help and support when she needed them most.
I loved witnessing Kane and Josie’s relationship. When things are good between them their interactions are easy and fun. The connection that they have had since an early age never wavered and I hoped that they could find a way to follow their hearts and be together.
I actually read this book throughout much of the night, wanting to discover what happens between the pair of them. My only niggle is that the issues that Jo had with accepting a future with Kane felt repeated, and yet I do appreciate that this was something massive for her to overcome.
Missing Beats is another great story from an author who I absolutely love reading. I award this novel 4 stars and look forward to devouring my next K.L. Shandwick book in the very near future.
Talk about a whirlwind romance! I may be a while catching my breath after all that. Sometimes no matter how much you think you know life becomes a storm with an unpredictable soundtrack.
