This book is such an amazing book. I could not put it down. I really enjoyed it and fell in love with the characters. I would recommend it.
First, I’m going to talk about the cover and the prettiness of the book as a whole before I start actually getting into the review, it has the little girl who is levitating on the cover and I love it, loads of people have said it’s creepy but I don’t think it is that creepy. I just don’t feel like it’s a super creepy book from the outside, maybe a little weird but not creepy. But the cover is beautiful the picture the colours and I love how she’s kind of levitating over the title, it’s beautiful. Also, a point on how the chapters are separated I love how they just have a black page with a little pattern on it, so simple and works and I love it. And the feel of the cover is just something I cannot describe.
Now onto the actual pictures in the story, erm they were fucking creepy, like those creeped me out some of them did, but I found that they worked really weel with the story and was very well incorporated, I think what is weirder about the pictures is the fact they are real. It’s real pictures that a photographer has taken and it kind of makes me shudder a little not going to lie. The pictures just work well in the book and it helped me imagine what the Peculiars may look like rather than having some creepy messed up image in my head that I created. At least, someone else created it haha.
The story begins with Jacob and his grandfather and he’s telling him stories of when he was with the peculiars and we see how he begins to outgrow these stories and think that they are fake, we skip a few years to when he is almost 16 and his grandfather is murdered in front of his eyes. Just before he dies though he tries to tell Jacob the truth about what he is and that the stories were true. Before I carry on with the rest of the plot, how they all treat the grandad, Abe, I was quite annoyed it only seemed to be Jacob that cared even a little bit the rest of them was like oh he’s going old he’s losing his mind let’s just stick him in a home and we will not have to deal. Why is it when it comes to old people that is the characters way of thinking. Don’t you think they won’t get into trouble at a home? Yeah right, they could do so much in a home just like they could at their own home. Anyway that out the way on with the story. He finally manages to convince his parents to go to Wales to get closure about Grandad Abe, and he finds the old house that Abe was talking about but it is abandoned and bombed from the war so he’s convinced but soon gives defeat but keeps going back to the house. On one of those visits back to the house he sees a girl Emma watching him and he accidently follows her through to a time loop which the Peculiars are stuck in for their own safety. He begins to learn about his grandfather and the peculiar and soon makes the choice leading up to a series of events that he is staying with them.

I don’t want to go into much more detail in case people haven’t read it.
So my thoughts erm I liked the character of Jacob he was well written it felt like I was going on this journey with him just from a very safe distant away from that world. He was everything you expected from a curious 16-year-old boy, obviously he wasn’t that normal because after seeing his grandad murdered people began to convince themselves he was crazy because he saw a tentacle monster. But I loved his character.
Grandad Abe although we only get a small time with him, I love him and what we do see of him he seems like a brilliant grandad (although later in the book we discover he was a bit of a crap dad) the stories and how he wanted to warn Jacob but without outright telling him what he was or what Jacob was. We learn about Abe as the journey through the story and he has his secrets but they seemed so innocent to what Jacob’s father was making them out to be.
Emma, I love her character, when we first see her meet Jacob her anger and untrusting of him just made me chuckle even after Miss Peregrine telling her that he was ok, there is still a wall there until they talk about his grandad. I loved her as a character.
Now here comes my problem, Emma and Abe was together. Emma and Jacob kissed, although this had no effect on my rating it kind of weirded me out, going for the grandson of the man you love erm it’s just creepy and although I understood the connection it weirded me out. But although they kiss and see she is over Abe I don’t believe it, and although they have such a good connection with each other, I’m not sure I can ship them together. I don’t think I can accept them together.
The plot of this book was fantastic I thought the book was very fast paced but it worked it kept me flipping every single page wanting to know what happened to them and what would happen next. When I finished the book my only thought was I need the next book but I have no money to buy it so I have to wait and it will probably be a couple of months before I get it. But I will definitely be carrying on with this story.
Another funny thing: I thought Ransom Riggs was a female, don’t ask me why but I did, it was only when I googled it today that I realised he was male, which shocked me because other than Nicholas Sparks, John Green, and a few others, I don’t tend to connect with Male writers I think I just need to read more and then I will begin to. But his writing was flawless I fell in love with it, so simple and beautiful and it was so easy for me to connect to his writing and his characters.
I really really enjoyed this book… actually I read it in only 2 days. The characters are beyond original and easily imagined. I have never read a book so out there and original yet relatable. Truly a special book!
Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs is the first book in the Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children series. Sixteen-year-old Jacob has questions after a family tragedy, which leads him to a remote island and to a ruined orphanage, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.
Plot 5/5: This is a most unusual and intriguing plot.
Characters 5/5: There were so many emotions that had me laughing, crying, and fearful for the characters throughout the story.
World building 5/5: Incredible world building between the present and the past.
Pacing 5/5: The pacing was steady, and kept me enthralled throughout the story.
Writing 5/5: The writing is beautiful, and with the addition of the vintage photographs, it made the story even more believable.
Overall 5/5
I thoroughly enjoyed this story and I’m eagerly anticipating what happens next to the peculiar children!
The start of this book was mysterious and I couldn’t put it down. I really really liked it, however, I felt that as the story went on, the story felt rushed which doesn’t make sense to me since the book is part of a series. At first the fantastical world was exciting and believable but by the end, I lost the feeling that the world and the characters were real as well as any desire to keep reading these next books.
This book uses a unique method of storytelling by including actual pictures to help tell the story of the Peculiars. This is used to great affect and helps to bring the reader into this creepy, wonderful world. The author has taken great pains to weave a magical story around these bizarre, real world pictures, and it definitely paid off.
The writing draws you in and the pictures keep you captivated, even though they make you shiver and wonder, “How?!” The characters are just as wonderful, and experiencing their Peculiarities through Jacob, the main character, gives us a viewpoint to look through that is both familiar and comforting, yet chock full of the surprise and fascination that would naturally follow seeing such incredible things.
If you enjoy shivering at bizarre things and discovering a magical world nestled right under the nose of the unsuspecting common folk, if you enjoy characters that make you want to dig deep into a story and a world that’s too interesting to resist, I would highly suggest this captivating book!
A strange and yet fascinating story. The sort of book that stays with you long after you’ve read it.
I really loved this book! It’s not something I would normally read, but I am so happy I did! I admit I would never have heard about this book if it wasn’t for the movie coming out recently. I have NOT seen the movie yet, books are always better. I can’t wait to read the other 2 books in this series. I really enjoyed the pictures and letters throughout the book. It made everything that much more real.
this is a great book to read when you want to start a new series. i was so enthraled in the book one day i didnt do any homework! one thing to note (like always) the movie is different from the book but i think the book was way better. i dont usually like sci-fi books but this book was great! another thing i dont usually read series but again this book was so good i got the whole series and even the little extra book. definitely recomend!!
This story is a surprise just waiting to be unwrapped. The world created in this peculiar tale is enchanting, haunting, beautiful in all the right ways! I couldn’t wait to read the rest in the series!
Ransom has done an amazing job..I didn’t picture slender Man as his monsters but hey Tim Burton apparently did.. huge fan of Tim Burton by the way.. but I have all of this set except the new book.. have read to my kids and there teens before bed they love hanging out listening to me read it..
I give it an A+. The author successfully weaves the characters between decades of time. Explanations of how and why are seemingly flawless. An intriguing books like Riggs follow up books. Looking forward to more from this author.
The editing and formatting are pretty on point; usually traditionally-published books are a mess, so that was nice. There are photographs which enhance the writing as well.
This is a good read—not really anything like the movie, as so many details must’ve had to be changed to get it into one.
Absolutely brilliant characters with advanced development.
The story got off to a slow start; was into it but I didn’t truly miss it until about 60% in. I was always glad I’d picked it up though.
The book has mystery, adventure and originality—something you don’t see much of anymore. It even managed to surprise me once or twice—something else that never happens.
Overall somewhere between 4 and 5 stars.
The twisted plot line really got me hooked and the backgrounds of the characters changed the way the reader would normally portray them.
I want to give this book 4 stars but I’ll have to settle with 3.5.
Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is a mysteriously creepy tale about rather peculiar children living in a strange world and the main character Jacob trying to unravel the questions surrounding his grandfather’s life and the secrets each holds.
I liked the unique story of Miss Peregrine’s. The hint of time travel and a world where a special set of people have supernatural abilities. I also liked the historical significance of the book. Most of characters were very strange and most times I could not keep up with who was who. Jacob and Emma’s relationship was super weird, but eventually I ended up liking Emma the most out of all the characters in this book, other than Millard of course. What’s there not to love about that boy. I did not care too much for Jacob, I cannot explain exactly why either. I did find some parts of the book to be a little slow and boring, but towards the end I really enjoyed it.
I did not love this book. For a minute I wasn’t sure I was even going to like it, but I definitely enjoyed it. This story was different than anything else I’ve read and Jacobs journey was very interesting to read. While I do not think it was executed to the fullest, but I am more than willing to continue on with the series. I have high hopes for the rest of this brilliant story.
LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i suggest you read this
I’ve wanted to read Miss Peregrine for awhile, but finding out that they’re making a movie gave me the kick I needed to get on with it. I have to say that the story is very intriguing and I was drawn in from the first page. I simply had to know what was going on with the grandfather’s stories and where that was going to take us. As a lover of photography, I also really enjoyed the story being told through these old photographs. Finding out at the end that they were actual historical photographs only made me love it more. The story itself is a very unique kind of paranormal mystery type tale and I found it to be so different than anything I’ve read to date. I’m very curious to see how the movie compares, but even more than that I’m extremely excited to read the next two books in the series.
What a fun world to enter! I liked the way the characters are introduced, from the main to the slightest bit part the characters feel like they come to life. Had a really good time reading the whole series, and hope to see more from this creative, wildly smart author.
